hi guys

I was wondering if anyone knows of any good public hunting for pheasents around the twin cities? I usually hunt in sw mn but it so hard to get down there every week. If anyone knows of any okay public hunting around the twin cities that would be helpful for next year hunting season.

Sure there is. I have shot roosters within 30-60 minutes of the big downtowns. You may or may not see many birds. As to where, you need to get out there and do your own leg work. Scout in spring, late summer and fall.

Roosters crow in the spring and will tell you they are there. If they are there in the spring, a few should be around come fall.

As mentioned, it can be tough hunting.

I would suggest buying one of the $5 public hunting maps they sell at gander and other places that show all the WMAs and WPAs in the state. I have hunted quite a bit within an hour or so around the cities. Have had pretty poor luck heading south, a bit better heading west. But you may hunt all day to flush only a couple of birds. There are some that are really close to the city, but i usually try to get a little farther out. For example if i head west i don't start hunting till i get past glencoe.

A couple years ago at the state fair the DNR booth was handing out public hunting maps. They are great. They only show WMA's and not WPA's. You might check with the DNR and see if they still have them.

All on-line if you look.

Are you guys near the west metro seeing many birds in town? With all the snow and such, I wonder how the birds are doing and if they are moving inward to feed at bird feeders and such. So many cattail swamps are filled in this year, sure is tough right now. I gotta believe they are pretty concentrated right now where the food is if they've survived all the snow.
