Crappies on Rainy

Recommended Posts

I was with Skif in over the bog in the 80's. He was my grandmother’s broker and took me fishing. The first fish I caught I thought was a bass. I had never seen a crappie that big before. I have a 17" crappie on my wall from fishing with Skif. I remember that trip well because he out-fished me 10/1. When we got back to town, I bought my first Vexilar and the next day we were even. I learned more about crappie fishing the few times I fished with him and I am eternally grateful. If you see him, tell him Mike from Hibbing says hello.

Three of us will be descending upon gods country for a weekend of merriment on the ice and the trails, Feb 3-6. My two traveling companions are actually customers of mine from Chicago. We did LOW last year late just before they stopped fishing thru the ice for the year. The bite was slow. Furthermore, the factory approach to the sport wasn't exactly the best venue for my guys as they only get one shot a year at this. That is why we are damned excited about Rainy this year. An opportunity to experience the sport in natures full beauty is most appealing. The info on the crappie bite is much appreciated. We will have sleds and will be able to move around. We will also have the guidance of two of your esteemed local professionals. The 10 day is calling for the weather to stabalize and stay moderate. The million dollar question is will we be able to get into a few eyes that time of the year? Thanks.

Hi John,

You have to fish Canadian waters this time of the year for crappies. Who are your guides??? If I was going by sled and after walleyes, I would fish reefs 25 to 45 feet. You can catch walleyes off birch point, but right now a majority of them are small., so I would hit reefs from bushyhead to the brule.

Sincerely,

Fishmeister

Hi John,

Good choices, Matt grew up going to their cabin in the Seine with his Dad & brothers & been fishing Rainy since he could hold a rod, as far as Ryan, he also grew up going to their cabin on Dryweed, and his father is one of the best sticks on the lake, so Ryan had a great teacher also. Fishing has been tough the last few weeks, but I know the 2 of them will do their best to get you on fish.

Sincerely,

Fishmeister
