Vexilar Goes Crazy

Fishinguy40

Question

I know I've seen posts on here about Vexilars and the need to replace the brushes but I couldn't find any of them.

The other day while fishing the Vexilar was working great and suddenly went crazy. The entire wheel was lit up solid with all 3 colors. Is this a symptom of need to to clean or replace the brushes?

I did take it apart when I got home. Brushes still seemed adequate. I did wipe the rings down and got some stuff off. Unfortunately I managed to damage one of the brushes while doing this so I ordered a brush replacement kit online from Vexilar. Just wondering if the symptoms I had will be fixed with the brush kit.

Battery was fully charged but I did not check battery voltage to ensure it is a good battery that holds a charge. I guess I'll check.

Check the voltage, and connections. Voltage issues is the #1 issue on any Vex troubleshooting situation, most common thing is a bad battery or poor or corroded connections.

If it's still acting up, check the ducer cord while in use...wiggle it, starting from the back of the unit down to the puck, you may have a short in the ducer.

Third possibility, is a intermediate short in the display bushing, or the wire sodered to the brush's. A gentle tap of the finger on the center of the display will induce the short usually to show itself...gentle..DO not bash it...just a thump with the finger. This usually is accompanied by a noticeably louder rattle or squeak from a display that has a bogus bearing ready to go.

If that freaky short looks to be the case, then it's definitely time to do a brush and bearing kit and clean.
