Darkhouse spearing Eelpout

I assume Eelpout are considered a rough fish.

Anyone ever go up to one of the big lakes they are abundant in and try to darkhouse spear them?

Any good locations?

Do they ever get shallow enough?

I wouldn't mind getting a mess of them to cook up.

I've caught eelpout on Pike Bay in less than 10 FOW, though i was dark at the time so it would have been tough to spear them!

They are a legal rough fish. I don't know of anyone who targets them but if you figure out where they're at I don't think it would be to tough. I hear they like to come right to the hole.

They do come right up the hole. I was snoozing a little bit in the house when one came up and splashed in my hole, I woke up pretty fast and thought it was a muskrat. By the time I grabbed for the spear, it was gone.

I always thought Burbot were a deep water bottom feeder. They are in the family of Codfish, which are a deep, cold water species. I guess I've never seen or caught them anywhere else.

Are you sure it wasn't a Bowfin that came up into the hole? They're a shallower water fish, and look an awful lot like a Burbot in the water.

Years ago when spearing on Mille Lacs we would see many pout during the day. We would be in ten feet of water and the ice outside was littered with them.
