Snow storm coming

vexi

Recommended Posts

I am coming up for one night (Thursday night) from Iowa. I think this might not be such a good idea looking at the forecast. How well are the roads maintained up in that area? Looks like maybe a lot of snow Thursday night and we are supposed to leave Friday morning. Any chances of getting stranded on the lake for an extra night?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Vitt

All clear right now but sounds like it is on its way. As soon as it stops you can bet the plow trucks will be out in full force opening the lake back up.

Heading up on Sunday. You think the roads will be good enough to drive a car there by then. I do have a Blazer but would prefer to drive a car since it gets 2x better mpg.

I just came of the lake and it is wild right now. As soon as it settles down enough the plows on the North side (Beacon Harbor, Petrwoskes, Club Red & Hillmans) will be out in full force. Just when will it settle down?

Don't be fooled by the radar images. URL is covered by the Duluth or Grand Forks radar. We are on the edge of range from both so it always looks like we are getting less. The bummer is that this is only Round 1. Round 2 with even more snow is supposed to start Friday night. Ater moving houses and people all day we are now tucked into the north shore about as close as we can get without cutting trees but at least the wind and snow can not get a miles long run at us.

Does it defy all common sense to leave here at 4 am tomorrow for your neck of the woods to do a sled/porty trip this weekend? crazy

Hope to see you for minnows in the AM.

Well, at least it will be warmer than I'm used to up there. grin

Yah, Steve, 4 am. Coffee's set to brew with the thermos next to it. Guess I should try to get some sleep. Or leave now and sleep later.

Last night went fine without a hitch or problems of any type and that is always a plus when it gets nasty like this. Most of the Hllman/Beacon Harbor Roads where super wide and staying somewhat clear last night but I have yet to see them this morning.

Of course here comes round two and I love that the weather service uses the the word "...BUT"

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CST THIS EVENING... ...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO NOON CST SATURDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN GRAND FORKS HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW AND STRONG WINDS...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO NOON CST SATURDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT. A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR LIGHT SNOW...BLOWING SNOW AND LOW WIND CHILLS REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CST THIS EVENING.

* SNOW WILL COME TO AN END BY LATE MORNING. BUT NOT AFTER DUMPING FROM 4 TO 8 INCHES OF NEW SNOW.

* FOR LATE MORNING AND THE AFTERNOON LOOK FOR A BREAK...BUT NORTHWEST WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH WILL CAUSE SOME BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW AND WIND CHILLS TO 25 BELOW ZERO.

* A SECOND STORM SYSTEM WILL BRING SNOW TO THE AREA STARTING THIS EVENING AND ENDING SATURDAY MORNING. ANOTHER 4 TO 9 INCHES OF SNOW IS LIKELY. NORTH WINDS WILL BLOW AT 15 TO 30 MPH CAUSING SOME BLOWING AND WIDESPREAD DRIFTING SNOW.

I'm sorry to hear that you guys will be getting hit today. It sounds like the cities will miss the brunt of the storm. We had rain all day yesterday and it got rid of most of the ice/slush on the roads and settled the snow banks so we can now blow more snow. :grin My roof had a lot of snow and I was about to pull out the roof rake but the rain did the job for me. Right now nothing is happening but they are forecasting 1-3 inches for the metro area. Stay safe, Happy New Year and we will see you next week.

It didn't go to bad today. We started out with four V plows and a straight blade, by 2pm we had the roads opened back up about as wide as the wind would let us withouth causing problems later. (V drivers plowed in a nasty cross wind all day YUCK) I was able to remove all the big drifts around the rental houses and clean up the corners/junctions while bringing clients in and out. Hopefully todays work will help if round two hits us tonight.

That would be Kelly trying to throw it against the wind. Unfortunately to make sure we didn't mess ourselves up later his only option was to fight the breeze. It makes for huge plume and a cool picture. As for me I am the straight blade guy, I get to back around rental houses, vehicles, tip ups, fix corners and high spots in the bank while dodging V-plows all day. To be honest I think V plowing is about as boring as it gets, I would much rather have toilet duty then rattle up and down the main roads all day.

Nice pic Johny! How fast were ya goin in that one? That snow was sure flyin. cool

Usually 25 to 30 mph depending on the horsepower. Usually we just put our foot almost to the floor and take as thick a cut as the engine can handle without losing speed. Speed throws snow further laugh . The pic is soft snow into a stiff wind so there is not much distance to the plume. On a calm day with hard snow I've seen snow chunks go out to 60 feet. Different lake plows do different things better. Both of our V-Plow were custom made with bigger stingers and a rudder to get more distance to the plume while Buddy likes V-Plows that he calls "diggers" that shave the ice to make smoother road.

Not very many miles, more like gallons to the mile. grin My F-350 gas with the 460 will burn about 25 gallons an hour. At night it is strange looking as the exhaust manifolds glow bright red and light up everything 10 feet around with a red glow. We also have to pay Fed and State gas tax on the fuel we burn up on the lake but MNDOT will not come out there to help us. grin

Buddy and I kept track once opening the roads back up after a 4 inch snowfall with wind. We burned up over 800 gallons in 2 days to get the roads cleared again.
