Help with Gun issue.

Okay, I have 3 shotguns. A Remington 1187 12 guage (pheasant hunting), a Mossberg Silver Reserve O/U (pheasant hunting), and a Remington 870 express 20 guage youth shotgun (squirrel hunting).

Here's my problem:

In pheasant season, I use all three for pheasants, and squirrels. BUT, pheasant season and deer season are mixed together. I have been shooting open sights and rifled slugs for the past 8 years...YUCK! I've been too lazy to add a rifled barrel and a scope for deer in years past. This year, I want to change that. I need a gun with a rifled barrel, and scope for under $500.

Gander Mountain sells a Remington 870 sure-shot slug gun. It is $479 with a $30 mail in rebate. Does anybody have this gun? I love the 870's, but this one has the "sure-shot" stock with the thumbhole. Is it any good?

Once I bought an ar-15, I switched from a traditional stock to the thumbhole stock on my 870 and on when I bought my 17HMR. It is a more natural hand postion and I find myself more relaxed with the thumbhole stock setup vs. tradtional. It does goof me a little when I use my over under, but I quickly remember how to hold it correctly. Once you use it, you will love it.....

I have a rem 870 super slug gun, it has that stock and I like it its very comfortable and gun is accurate. I like that the scope mounts to a rail mounted to the receiver not that cantIlever deal that doesn't seem very stable to me. My only complaint is the finish sucks It's painted not blued and it will rust at the first hint of moisture, even oiled so if it gets wet clean it well and dry it quickly.

I wouldn't shoot a slug gun w/o a cantilever scope mount, and here's why. I shot a slug gun for a number of years and used a rifled barrel with the scope mounted to the receiver. I could never really dial in the scope on that gun and only figured out recently why. If you think about it, on the 870, the barrel and receiver are two different components. You're always removing the barrel to clean it and whatnot. Well every time you remove it and reattach it, it's probably not 100% exactly the way it was when you took it off. Well if your scope is attached to the receiver instead of the barrel, your scope and barrel won't be dialed into each other if they aren't attached directly to each other. It makes a lot of sense if you think about it and it will save you a lot of frustration and ammo to go with the cantilever.

Just picked up a used 12 guage 870 express super magnum. it has the rifled barrel, and cantilever scope mount on it. excited to shoot deer with this gun!

ON my 870 super slug the barrel is pinned to the receivr So it doesn't move, why do you have to take the barrel off?
