i have a friend coming up to hunt 183 this wkd. its a lottery area (1 deer). he wants to shoot a doe with the bow. does he have to tag it with his $27 archery tag cause its a lottery area?? then if he goes back home to tag a buck he shoots with a bow in 227(intensive), what tag would he put on that cause his regular archery tag in gone?? hope that makes sense.

or could you just put the management tag on the doe in 183??? so you can still use your buck tag in a different area??

You cannot use a management tag in a lottery area, Period.

I have had the same situation the last couple of years.

If he shoots a deer with his bow in the lottery area, he has just lost his either sex tag and will no longer be able to shoot a buck with his bow in an intensive harvest area.

Short story, if he is holding on to his either sex archery tag for a nice buck, he better not shoot anything in the lottery area unless its a nice buck, otherwise, he is done hunting bucks with his bow.

You are correct sir!

Why would he want to shoot a doe in a lottery area and not an intensive area? Doesnt really make sense to me but what they said is correct lottery is one deer, and bow is the only one you can have either sex with, muzzy is draw only in lottery now

Thanks guys-

I would like some doe's shot on our property. We have a very high population of doe's. With our food plots and doe's coming out to them early and often it would be a nice opportunity for a new bow hunter to the sport to have a easy opportunity on a doe. He just doesn't want to lose his buck archery tag.

It's a bummer. This will be the first year I won't be able to take a doe on our property up north. Hopefully with a mild winter, we can get back to managed next season.

That was the problem down here for awhile. Zone 344 was whitewater and it gets pounded good so it's usually a lottery area. However, not all of zone 344 is public land, some of it is private, and that private land can get overrun with deer, but with a one deer limit, many of the landowners hold out for a buck, even though the does were coming out of the woodwork.

man i wish i had that problem laugh

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.

Took another trip into the BWCAW last Friday to fish for lakers.  I waited until daylight to drive the snowmobile to the portage so I could safely cross the large pressure ridge in the middle of the lake.  There were 4 other parties already parked at the portage when I got there, plus 2 other parties came later in the day (one even after sunset).  Walking/towing on the lake was quite easy and I found a spot to fish with nobody close by.  Fished for over 10 hours until sunset and didn't catch a fish.  I did have 4 hits on jigs, including one I got up to the bottom of the hole before the snap swivel caught on the bottom of the hole and the fish shook off.  Enjoyed the sunset in the BWCAW before starting the trek out in dusk.  While leaving I saw 3 other people towing sleds just coming onto the lake, I assume to spend the night.  While snowmobiling in the dark back to the landing I got slightly lost but was able to correct my rout and make it out before running out of gas (was on empty).  Was very nice day in the BWCAW, but it is a tough trip when you don't even catch a fish.  May go back to Burntside this week for a much easier trip.

Anyone have any info on Susan Lake just north of Black Bay on Vermilion?  I'm curious if it's a panfish possibility while we wait for the opener.

Had a fish fry for my wife and the neighbor lady, so it’s time to get some more fish.

Hot out today to enjoy the weather and fish. The bite was crazy good. I kept 10 crappies and 8 gills. Gills were 7 3/16 to 8 1/8 inches crappies were from 9.5. 10.5 inches. Shallow water just below the ice. 3 mm pink and white with a white spug.
