My first attempt at a bacon burn

I thought maybe some of you would get a kick out of my fisrt attempt at a bacon burn, especaily Boar. Looked perfect for about a 1/2 hr then poof!

Here is the poof.

and here I am to put it out.

I am learning alot in my first year of bear hunting.

After all that the bear is still showing up, just not at the right time.

What type of Moultrie is the one used for these photos? Price for the camera? I hear good things about Moultrie. Thinking about picking one up, just wondering how much.

Hah, I watched myth busters so I knew better then that . Funny thing, on Sat. morning I was trying some different burns and one of the things I was trying was chicken fat from the rotisery. Had it burning good and a nice smell coming from it, then I said to the wife, I should try adding some liquid smoke to it when I do a burn and my wife says well put some in. OOPS, didn't ignite, but boy ohboy did it boil over and then into the sterno, then flame. Good thing the flame didn't last to long. Another one of those awhah moments.

Northsider, it is the 6.0 IR model, I think the package said d-65 gamespy. I now have 2 of them and so far so good. Bought both of mine this summer 1 in July and 1 in August. I bought them from cabelas, regular price is 139.99, picked 1 up onsale for 119.99.

That is a tough bear for your first year. It would take a well seasoned bear hunter to take him.

Those picture are better thant the first, man what an awsome bear, just a privilage to have him at your site. Say JB, I dont remember advising jet fuel to warm the bacon Yea burns take a little practice to master, takes few times to figure out the proper distance to place the can abouve the sterno, my first burn i used three of them tea candles that u put in pumpkins, but they can get blown out from a breeze so they dont always work either. Just takes some experimentation. My shop turns into a mad scientist lab come bear hunting. Good luck JB

What was the problem with jerkbaits burn? Too close to the flame? Do any of you vets have pics of your sterno setups while in use? I'm thinking about trying one out this weekend if I can get out.

I dont have any pics but yea JB's can was to close to the flamme, Looking at his set up a little closely now, I can see the problem is his can is really to close, I did'nt notice that before, I was watching the bootsters on Appolo 13 do a rotaion burn to dock with the Lem just teasin ya JB, I would take a wire hanger an poke holes just under the rim of the big can, an cris cross the wire hanger pieces to support the soup can, that should give about the right height, bacon grease loves to splatter an the grease will ignight just like on your stove at home if it tougches the element, you wanna get it to the point where you get a nice simmer so it dose take some experimentation. I use bacon greason, not straight bacon, straight bacon will of course snap crackle an sizzle an I feel that will hindr a bear coming in, unless hes really hungery. If he sticks his nose in a can of bacon sizzleing before you get a shot, well.... try fryng bacon naked at home an you'll get the point. Good luck, boar

Bog, what would a sesoned hunter do different then a first year hunter. Getting the bear to come in during daylight is the trick. I am doing what some of the seasoned hunters are telling me to do.

NorthernOutdoors, I think that is what happened. I had the wires thru theholes in the can set about 2" up and as it heated the wires started to sag letting it get closer to the sterno. I had expermented with chicken fat Saturday morning and that is the hieght that worked well for that. This is why Boar says a person needs to expirement. With the bacon grease I probably need to be to be 3"-4" up from the sterno.

Boar, you did give me that info beofore when you told me in another post how to do the burn. I just missed the part about the top of the can. Problem was I didn't try the bacon grease before hand, I just did it the same as the chicken fat thinking it would be similar. Hears to learning.

My first year bear hunting I tried a Honey burn on my Mr heater! Wish I had the pic's to share. Worked great until the fire ball!

When it starts smoking it's close to igniting so it must be up a couple inches. I use a 3# coffee can with a smaller one with a wire thru a hole on each side set on top edge of 3# can to suspend it. Sterno in bottom of 3# can. 3# can works good to carry in and out with lid and all parts inside 3# can. I burn until good smoke is going and then take it off sterno and let it set. The smoke and smell in the air will float around the woods and that is what you want. Just use liquid smoke in a spray bottle to spray around when you get to stand. Be sure to let cans cool off before putting lid on. Experiment in back yard so you can put it out if needed and be sure not to start forest fire. That would be a bad day. That's a dandy bear so sit still and wait, they can be sneaky and you only fool them once. Keep a lot of scent around bait pile, anise, smoke, grease, etc. I never worry about my scent as we leave alot around when baiting. I smoke and leave butts around bait site to get them used to different smells. Just stay still as they see more than one thinks. They circle the site sometimes and staying still is important. If you build it they will come. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

JB. I'm just glad you didn't burn yourself. There was someone on here last year that had the same thing happen, but in the course of putting out the fire he spilled burning grease on his hands! Cost him a trip to the ER.

This time of year one could pretty easily have a fire get away from them as well.

I love the second pic you posted. You're "warming" yourself by the fire, yet you're STILL watching for your bear!!!!

Yep, before I started to put it out I was looking for the bear, there was a good smoke rolling for a 1/2 hr so I thought you just never know. I am glad that I have been carrying a good pair of leather work gloves along for handling the greasy logs.

I keep trying to tell myself that. The only thing is in area 12 it seems like a person only gets drawn every other year. Unless you are from out of state.

i hear ya on that drawing every other year, we also hunt in #12. didnt draw this year so next year i should draw,and agree with the out of state ers getting tags more often, must be the $210.00 licence fee.

That would be my geuss also. A coworker here, his dad lives in Iowa and his dad gets drawn every year where Ken will get drawn every other year.
