Lake Turnover Guess?

Recommended Posts

Anyone care to take a guess on when the area lakes will turn over this year? Also does anyone know when the average turnover time is for this area?

I am no scientist, but I believe that the turnover begins when the surface temp gets around 40 degrees. That it when the water starts to get dense and starts to sink. I would guess most lakes in the OT area will not see this until late September or early October.

grrrr.... I dont like this thread. It's too early to mention the "t" word!

Easy there Tonkabass, if this is too early then when is the average time for turnover?

Water is most dense at 4 degrees Celsius -about 38 F- so you'll probably see turnover around the first part of October or so. Often you hear people say that a lake is turning over in late summer when the water gets green or whatnot, but really that's just an algae bloom or something of the like.

The lakes are in the turnover process now.At around 50f the more dense h2o starts to displace the o2 depleted h2o and forces it up to the surface as you sometimes see "green" decaying matter and/or get a rotten egg smell at the surface.By the time the surface temperature reaches 39f(4c) the turnover is almost complete.c63

Okay, I'll bite. For the inexperienced, what's the importance of the turnover in the fall of the year? Does it have significant impacts on fishing?
