Was thinking of hitting Sabre lake saturday but I have heard from a couple of people that the landing was real shallow last fall and was wondering if it has come up this spring at all. I have a 17 1/2 foot boat and was wondering if I would have a problem landing it. Any help would be greatly appriciated in helping me determine if I should try a different lake or risk doing damage to my boat. Thanks

I think you will be fine. I got my 20' glass boat in there with no problem last year, and I have a bunk trailer. I think the lakes in this area are alot higher now than they were a year ago.

the Cannon river is up so sabre's landing should be Ok. Sabres landing is never good. just OK and no good at all.

Are there any walleyes to be had? maybe panfish?

Posted

Very few walleyes, panfish are scarce but generally have good size structure. 8 and 9 inchers even.

Going to try my catfish honey hole today! Been a couple weeks since I've been out there.

Posted

Did you have any luck out there?

Posted

Highly doubtful. That lake was like the Dead Sea last time I was out there. One bullhead.

It wasn't as fast of action as it has been, but I did manage 2 channels. Those cats gotta sleep some times too.

I got out to my catfish spot on Sabre this past weekend. Caught 2 dandy channel kitties! Had a couple other bites. I figured with the waxing moon and cooler water temps that the bite would be going. I was not disappointed!

Posted

What are you using for bait.

Posted

We tried all sorts of things until my cousin suggested pickled eggs. I laughed and tried it anyway. They pounded it! I went again yesterday. Caught a couple more and a big old bullhead.

Sabre is an interesting little lake. Only fished it once last winter, very murky water... caught one 5-6lb northern and a crappie. The catfish really have my interest, I tried hard on Roberds last year for them with very little success.

I appreciate slab sharing his experiences out there. The great thing about catfish is that very few fisherman care about them.

I share alot of info regarding the bite I find and always will. If I can help another have a great day on the water, then I will.

Plenty of fish for everyone and we do not own the fish in the lake, they are there for all to enjoy.

If others would rather do the mum's the word, that is fine also, I just choose to tell others if they ask.

I will typically post on the baits used and depth's but if someone asks, I will tell unless I got the tip from another, then I will not let others know about anothers hot spot.

Thanks Harvey for the support. I don't think it hurts at all to share the information especially for folks that don't get out much. Why waste time fishing lakes where there is no potential to catch fish. These fish are released. Just thought I would like to share the success with others. The kitties were all 25+ inches and they hit the pickled eggs hard!

Here is what I know. There is a Hell of a bite going on Cedar. 15 - 25 fow! For some nice Crappies. We have been pulling Hyper tails, also road runners with fatheads are doing well. French has been doing well as the Crappies are real nice. I have been using ice raps tipped with a minnow head, in 15 -18 fow of water. We did catch and release 21 eyes a few weeks ago on french in 18 fow off the south rock bar! 1/4 oz jig with shiners. Roberds you can troll X raps smaller size and catch eyes trolling the SW side. Run baits in 6 to 15 fow! Killed the eyes out their last year doing this. We also ended up with a 10 lbs eye. I will be on French Friday night pulling sticks # 13! Big Sam lost a true pig doing this, well over 12 lbs. A buddy was on Shields all weekend and ended up with some nice eyes pulling Mimic Minnows real slow off the steep breaks going into deep water, also some big bass as well. Bass were on the mid lake flats on Cedar in 16 fow chasing bait fish. Caught some pigs doing this! The pike are following the Crappies that are balling up in the deeper water.

Just thought I would put my two cents in. As far as work goes finding them, that's what fishing is all about! But if you can help a brother out to find them, I'm down with helping people out that work there butts off for their family's and don't have the time to spend in a boat like I do. If you are out their and see a boat with two orange G loomis fish on the front of the boat stop over I will be more then glad to hook a brother up and put a smile on their face.

Thanks RD, Truth, and the others for sharing your information.

So Truth, that's were the Crappie Taco's came from!!!I Also forgot to mention buddy's did real well Monday on French, they boated 3 Muskies the biggest being 47". Didn't ask what they were catching them on. But I know it was an over size spinner baits trolling! If you see a couple of old timers out there trolling over the deeper water tell them Rubber duck says Hi! LMAO

Yep. DOn't feel like saying much on these forums today. Moderators are changing whatever they feel like. GO MOD's!! laugh

LoL. I seen that. What is the point if you cant say what you feel.

I look at it this way. Everyone has an opinion if you don't like it don't read it. That's why I decided to post what I did, I'm sure I gave a few spots up for a couple of die hard's that fish this time of year!

Who cares doesn't mean that you are going to go out their and bag a limit! And if you do well good for you!

To many sensitive people out their these days.

So with that being said enjoy, what time you have on the water because life is to short to give FLock!

Posted

Tough subject. When I saw rubbers post I was an initially annoyed because one of the lakes he mentioned is a lake that I fish and had to work hard to find the fish there. But I also understand that it isn't my lake and that others have the right to finish it. I am the type of guy who usually is more on the mum side unless I know you personally. Just because I have seen what happens to good spots when the word gets out.

Posted

I am just glad to see good fishing reports here. Most importantly, seeing fellas' frowns turned upside down. I am content. I am kinda itchin' for some good ol' Minnesota tradition in the winter--hardwater fishin'.

Posted

Like I said before you still have to go out in the elements and put your time in regardless if the fish are cooperating or not! We all work way to hard in life not to go out an enjoy a day on the water!

Except maybe Truth, he seems to have a lot more time on the water then me!

One thing you will notice, I wont post when their is 5000 people out in the summer months. I know there is only a hand full of die hard's that fish this time of year!

Can anyone tell me how to post pictures on this form?

Posted

That's fair rubber. I agree I could tell all my spots right now and there would only be a handful of people out there. Side note, the eyes r going really well. Big live bait up shallow, the roomy and I got a 25 and a fat 28 yesterday

Posted

I would say winter is the worst when it comes to giving out good info online, way too many people have too much time on their hands, wheel-houses, and electronics that's put fish on the ice

Posted

And man is it cold out there when the wind is blowing and your hands are cold from catching fish, like ice fishing without the shelter!

Posted

See that's what I'm talking about!!!! I know were you fish too! LOL

application has been submitted. 👍   Leech......i've shot my share of bear......it be nice to get another but not the end of the world if i dont. i get to spend time with my son...its just another way to get into the woods. i've been at it since about 1976......that rush when you walk up to the bait and see the logs scattered all over and bait gone just doesnt get old for me.   i had to get rid of 1 rug because of bad tanning. i have another rug, shoulder mount and made 3 pillows from 2 different bear hides. my biggest issue has become what to do with the hide....that seems more of a trophy then the meat. i inquired 1 year at the Alex decoy show when there were a couple hide guys there and they didnt seem to interested. 🙄 i have no other ideas for the hide.......approval from the wife is not even negotiable!!!!!

aw that date is fine and maybe someday we will have beer!!!

Something in May, like around Opener.  Could be white knuckles for boaters that weekend with the way things stalled out since the contest started and how thick it still is.   Highs in the 50’s coming but lows are around freezing and not a lot of wind in the extended forecast.   I’ll tell  ya what, if you change from 4/26 and it hits that date, I’ll buy ya some mythical FM beer.  And you know where you can find it. 😉. But don’t change on my account - this is still a free country!

I caught the 10pm news the other night. They said that starting next week Minnesota will be above average for temps. I give them a 33% chance of getting that right.
