You'll be fine on a wheeler, there is some thin areas out there though so maybe follow some other tracks.

watch out for the big area just out in the middle of the west half of the lake, looked like it hasn't been froze too long as there was no snow on it like the rest of the lake. There were a few vehicles driving on the lake mostly around the edge, not accross the middle. I don't know about the east end only went on the west access.

Due to the inconsistent freeze up it varies greatly. Alot of areas have up to 14" or more, but there are some that are much thinner, I just don't feel comfortable saying it's this thick out there, go ahead and drive.

If you take it easy and follow other people (preferably ones with bigger trucks grin) you should be ok. If you have a wheeler or snowmobile I would lean towards that option for another week or so.

Welcome to FM btw!

Was out there yesterday. tried to stay away from the crowds. Marked only a few fish, threw everything in my tackle box down the hole at them with no luck. Couldnt believe the amount of activity out there and the Ford f-350 super duty with the tandem axle fish house i saw drive out. figured they'd be on the bottom. Anyone else have any luck out there?

Was out there friday (26th) between the 4 of us we managed 4 eyes, 10-12 crappies, and 10-12 perch....kept 8 fish but still had a good time....Had about 15 inches of ice

Unfortunately you need to go fish in the city of houses! I put my permanent house out sunday and my hummingbird absolutley lit up with fish! Crappies didn't start til around 5 but nice perch before that! But not one single crappie til after 5!

Unfortunately you need to go fish in the city of houses!

Not true.....

Getting away from the crowds on Diamond doesn't mean plopping down aimlessly and catching fish, last year with the huge crappie population it was almost that easy. Look to areas that change slightly in depth along the shoreline breaks. If you have a lake map, look at any small inside turn on the shoreline and drill in that area till you find any kind of small subtle break, sometimes only a foot makes a huge differnce. There is a great walleye bite going right now in 18-19' and up shallower in <10'.

If you like crowds go ahead, they are in some graet areas and you will catch some fish, but to get on a consistent walleye bite you need to get away from them.

gr8icefishinmind, I would have had a lighter or matches for you! I also picked up a few crappies. I noticed the east access looked like someone broke through right off shore. The road was full of water.

I was in that north bay, toward the south end of the houses. i didnt want to venture through the masses out there so i stuck to the south end of the city of houses. Not sure when i'll be up there again. maybe tomorrow. i might hit some lakes closer to home.

Everyone seems to be driving on the lake now! The east access is really rough as the water that was in the access yesterday has now froze and is very jagged! I was out tonight for about 4 hours and only caught 2 nice crappies, the bite was really slow and but i was graphing alot of fish!!! Maybe the weather change slowed them down a bit??? Who knows!

Get yourself a striker like they use for lighting torches and such. Throw it in your tackle box and you never have to worry about a lighter or matches.

Didn't need one, found the problem! Just didn't have the line screwed in far enough, easy fix!
