My friend has a cabin on bsl and I've been fishing this lake for 20 years. We have not had problems finding eater walleyes (14-17 inches) on this lake. We have made our own walleye slot limit. Hopefully the 10 inchers are going back for all fisherman. You have to put your time in and learn different locations. This can be a very decent lake. Best thing to do on this lake is sleep in and let the early riser fisherman fish themsleves out. Walleyes don't bit in the morning on this lake. Also people are fishing way too deep the first few weeks.

BSL is a odd lake. I have never caught so many walleyes at dead noon on a hot summer day with jet ski's all over me and in 9' of water.

DING DING DING we have winner!

Even more odd is the reproduction of the Walleye on the lake. Nobody the DNR included knows why Big Sandy Walleyes don't get very big.

The dark stained water is the only thing many can come up with. The structure and forage base are certainly there...?

What a great weekend for opener!!! When was the last time you could wear shorts and get a sunburn? We had the privilege of fishing with Wahoo Hendo this weekend and he put us on the fish. All walleyes were caught in deeper water, which is not the norm for Big Sandy. We caught around a dozen and kept 6. I kept this 18.25" just because I won't be able to next year.

Good times. Wahoo Hendo got us on the fish (and made a beer run), what a guy. Not sure how the proposed slot will improve the walleye fishing on BSL. I'm sure that somebody can explain it to me...

I already said where we got them. Part of fishing is figuring the rest out on your own. We had to try several different baits before we figured it out.

I fish it alot like I do Devils Lake in SD and The Chippewa Flowage in WI.Its the same flowage stlye system.Bobbers,jigs and casting dranks.Think shallow.

We caught 30 walleyes this weekend jigging in 8-10ft of water on pink/chartruese jigs with shiners. All 12"-18". Ill tell you because I actually like to help, not just say I caught fish..........

Spinnerbaits for Northerns is always a blast on Big Sandy...Reel em in and toss em back to get bigger! ....You'll never have a bad day for Northerns once the water is warm! Perch are pretty easy to find too...I throw em back as well ...last time i kept 2 of them for a sandwhich and they had worms in the fillets...that was last summer...Catch and Release!

Still producing the daily average although in about 2 weeks this pattern will change with waters getting up to 75 or so for temps.

Man I wish we could of gotten into some of those on our current trip up to the cabin. We didn't get out near enough as we had a lot of general maintenance to do this time around. We are hoping to get out a little more around the 4th when we come up next. Looks like your all having a blast though!

Try lindy rigs in around 7-15 feet of water. We have caught a few the past few weekends. Nothing huge, but they kept us busy. We have been mainly using leeches, but have also got a few on some minnows.

      Most years for opener I drive up on Thursday. This year it was Friday afternoon so I figured bait would be tight. The only place that I stopped was L&M in Virginia. They said that they sold out of rainbows by 11am. I got crappie minnows and never needed the rainbows. All my walleye were caught dragging raps. The crappie minnows....well, you know what they caught.

      It depends on a lot of factors, I suppose.   I hung on to my last gas auger for a few years after getting into electric but I never used it so I finally sold it.  Haven’t missed it one bit.  You bet it was reliable though.  Still started on the second pull for the new owner.   After trying several options in the electric world, I’m currently settled on a Strikemaster 40V with Liteflight bits.  With 2 fully charged batteries, I fish all day in Canada, cutting 10 inch holes.     What I’ll agree with is, if you search by drilling and flasher sonar, you will probably be more comfortable with the run time of a gas auger.  When you start incorporating GPS mapping, forward facing sonar, and saved waypoints, you don’t need to Swiss cheese every spot you fish.  I can still run through both batteries when the fishing isn’t great but I never feel like I have to count my holes.  It’s more like: Did I need the second battery before the middle part of our fishing hours?  If I still can’t catch fish after running out 2 batteries, it doesn’t matter cuz the fish just ain’t biting.   That’s fishing on the dark side! 😉

      Yep, that's where I was🤪. Best fish were way up in the shallow boulders...   And.....if the 3 or 4 people that read this want to fish it.... go right ahead😁😏  My bass spots are no secret....trophy panfish spots, that's another story🤪
