So Rice's is open? I think yesterday there was still ice at the landing

I did some scouting today since the fishing conditions were less than ideal when I got to the French. For anyone planning a special trip to specifically target the rivers it's to early the water is way to cold and is still running over ice in some rivers and really muddy. There's a mud line along the shore coming from all the rivers I visited today. Wind was pretty strong out of the East today so hopefully it calms and changes direction tonight I'll be out again before light tomorrow.

The smaller upper side landing was wide open yesterday. Of course wind can blow some ice around and block it a bit but its mostly ice you could drive through. Im betting the big ramp will be ice free by monday if we get some rain like they say.

Fairly new to posting on here, so I aplogize in advance if I did not do this right! Taking my new father-in-law (just got married last summer)out for his first Lake Superior fishing experience and would love to put him on some fish! Trying to see if I should troll park point or run the river mouths out of Mcquade. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Waltersaurus the bite is a little slow but should get better as the water warms and hopefully you will get some good info and a starting point for you and the FIL.

Loonasea and I got out this morning and marked lots of smelt with a number of fish under them but the bite was a little slow till this afternoon and then we were able to catch 3 Coho and 1 nice male Brown Trout. We missed a few other bites as well. Felt great to get back in the boat again and the fishing will only get better as the water warms. We found the temps to be around 37 to 41.

Did some casting today off the Park Point beach just down from the Pier. Caught a coho and a really nice northern around 15#. The northern coughed up a smelt as I was releasing him.

Here's a question...anyone ever try fishing at night on L.S.? I would think during the smelt run you'd be able to catch some fish trolling somewhat tight to shore.

We got back out on Sunday and were fishing by 7:00 and stayed till 12:30. We had 4 hits and no hookups. Plenty of smelt but not very many fish under them. The water did cool down and until the sun warmed up the muddy water it stayed around 38-39 degrees.

Here is a picture of Randy's Brown trout from saturday.

OK Sunday was my first attempt ever at trolling park point. I fished about 5 hours and covered about ten miles without a strike.

#1 How fast should I have been trolling? I averaged around 2.3

#2 I ran boards and also flatlines with cranks and switched cranks and colors several times, any better options?

#3 I ranged from the 20 foot contours all the way into about 6-7 feet, worth a shot deeper?

I had a lot of misplaced confidence hitting the lake and now I'm humbled. Any help would be appreciated.

Zippy Welcome to HSO and dont loose your confidence as we caught fish sat but no hookups sunday and the fish were there just not willing to bite what we had out ,,,Lots of smelt along shore and they rose in the water colum as the water got muddier ,,,Out on Superior water temp is structure not necessarily what the bottom is like

Keep Trying

Wow there were a lot of people out there yesterday! Don't loose faith zippy, I have been out on the south shore 4 times this year and caught my fish before the water was "warm" and on the MN side!?. The lake is a crual mistriss, when you think you figured it out, those shiny bastards will decide to change it up. #1 thing to remember is you gotta pay your dues. It sounds like your doing the right thing though, just keep changing speeds and depths paying close attention to temp and color. Good luck out there. But stay away from me! wink

Don't worry Zippy you'll find them. Went out with a buddy on Sat. morning and only had one release. Seems to be the case every year where the first trip is just to scope things out and get a feel for where the fish are. Lots of fish on bottom and not many smelt balls. Fished anywhere from 15ft to 50ft. As the water warms up so will the fishing.

Zippy it will only get better as the season progresses. Loonasea and I laughed at how messed up things were on Saturday and yet we caught fish. Last year on the maiden voyage we got skunked so we were way a head of the game.

Only about 3 hours late getting on the water Saturday thanks to my screw ups and malfunctions crazy

Hi all. Hope you had a good Easter Sunday. It sure was beautiful down here in the cities with my extended family.

Anyhoo, the road restrictions have been lifted (May 2 for the Metro) and, soon, I'll be too busy to fish...so, I'm heading "up North" for a couple of days (Thurs, Fri) to spend some time on a "mini vacation" with my 11 y.o. daughter before I go back to road-building. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for river/LS fishing that's simple enough to keep an 11 year old interested for a couple of hours. We're staying in Lutsen...I've done some trout fishing in the past there, with limited success (Small rainbows in the streams, Lakers shore-fishing). I know the basics, just wondering if anyone has any hot tips...thanks, Paul.

Loonasea and I made it out today. Very slow and from the sounds of things on the radio most others had about the same luck. We did hear of a few fish caught early in the morning over a little deeper water and up by the river mouth's on the Ws. side. Water temp varied from 38 to 42 degrees. We caught 1 Coho and 1 smelt and washed a lot of lures.

Sure wish we could string together a couple days of nice weather mad

Went out yesterday in the late afternoon, or as soon as the wind kicked up. There were some nasty waves, but we did manage to stay out a few hours. Caught one smaller Coho, lunch for today. Never got the name of the guy in the 16ft northwoods, but man you are braver than I. Glad you found your board.

Jaxtas, are you talking about the older red lund that was out there yesterday afternoon? When we got back to the access there was a guy there in an old red 16-18' side console, looked like a 60's or 70's boat, that I wouldn't even come close to taking out on Superior. Couldn't believe he went out in that thing, but he caught some fish. Took pictures for him of a couple 28" browns and a coho that he caught! Said it was scary as heck out there for him, but he didn't take any water over the sides so he figured he was fine! lol.

We got one brown about 18".

Yeah that was him. I wasn't positive on the boat, but boy was he getting tossed by the waves. We stayed out as long as we could just to make sure he didn't get thrown out or sunk. laugh

That's the problem with fishing her in the spring. Weather patterns are unstable unlike summer.

The summer is when I catch the majority of my fish out of there. In the spring, I'm either at work, doing other projects, or the weather is uncooperative.

If I get out on her in the spring, great. If not, oh well. I know summer awaits

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.
