Thats a dandy LS King Jimbo. What did it hit?

It was one of the new UV/RV Moonshine spoons. It was there version of a Glow Bloody Nose. It was running on a Dipsy and I think that was the one thing that saved me from getting spooled. The first time he jumped out of the water the dipsy was with him. I was able to see the yellow shock cord shocked My leader was close to 7" long.

It was too hot this morning when the sun was out and it was calm. It was too cold when the wind switched out of the north east and started coming down the lake.

What a difference a day makes! Cool front came through and the barometer went on the rise and the fish got lock jaw. BD110 and I managed to catch 2 Lakers and miss one other bite for our efforts. Fished the same spots as yesterday and the fish were there but just not in the mood.

Great reports! what are the best landings to get on the big lake near duluth on down to port wing?

On the Mn. side there is Rices in Duluth and as you go up the shore there is McQuades, Knife river and then Two Harbors. In WS. there is Loonsfoot in Superior. Here is a link to some of the other landing in Wisconsin: List of Wisconsin Boat Landings

Most of the Lake Superior boat landings in WS. will cost you $5.00 to launch.

Nice fish & lots of good eats. It would totally suck to have more kings around.

Got the wife out for the first time and ended up getting skunked. Looked everywhere for some decent water and there was none to be found. All the places that were good on Tuesday are now way to dirty. We tried both WS. and MN and went out farther then I would have liked with the weather looking like it may storm on us.

Nope Lisa it wasn't you. I had lines in the water from 530 til 930 without a bump. Heard it was still dirty on the line at 14 miles out. I cam in and pulled cranks back on the flats for half an hour and got 3 eyes. Off the water at 10:00. 2 13"and a 20.25

Hey! I'm pumped for a quick trip up to Superior planned for this weekend with some buddies. I just noticed that the Grandma's marathon is going on and I'm wondering how bad the traffic congestion is going to be trying to get through town on Saturday morning between 6 and 7? We're heading up the North Shore about 80 miles. Thanks!

This is last years Advisory but It'll be the same this year as well...

TRAFFIC ADVISORY FOR SATURDAY, JUNE 18, 2011 - Marathon and Half Marathon

-At 12noon on Friday, June 18, Canal Park Drive from Railroad Street to Buchanan Street will be closed for Grandma's finish line set up. This roadway will remain closed to automobile traffic until after the Grandma's Marathon Finish on Saturday.

-Scenic Highway 61, along the lake, will be closed to traffic at 4:30 A.M., between Duluth and Two Harbors

-Lakewood, Homestead, Ryan, and McQuade Roads will be closed from the Highway 61 Expressway to Scenic Highway 61 at 4:30 A.M.-London Road will be closed at 6:00 A.M.

-Superior Street from 12th Avenue East to 5th Avenue West, will be closed at 6:15 a.m.

-Harbor Drive, Commerce Street, Lake Place Drive and Canal Park closed at 6:30 a.m.

I would aim for launching out of RICE's point landing (under the bridge), or Loon's Foot landing out of Superior, Wisconsin.

McQuade Roads will be closed from the Highway 61 Expressway to Scenic Highway 61.

Last year we Launched at McQuade. They kept it open from Xpress Way to the scenic Highway. Ba Grandmas! A few years back I Was going fishng, I had to plead my case to cross Scenic HWY 61 it was 4 am, I Told them I wont stop fishing untill the race was over. They let me Cross.

Maybe Ill go walleye fishing instead.

Between the bridge construction and Grandma's Marathon , you will not be able to move in Duluth or Superior this weekend. Your best bet is to come through in the middle of the night

I just happened upon this post by accident and now I'm concerned. We are planning to come up to Ely for our annual trip this weekend arriving in Ely Saturday 6/16 around 4 or 5 in the afternoon, as usual. This puts us in Superior/Duluth around 2 or 3PM. Will this marathon and other stuff be going on at that time? Any suggestions about how to get to Ely from Chicago without going across the bridge and without going through Superior and Duluth? Being stuck south of Superior for hours would really put a damper on our trip, to say the least!

Thanks,

Matt

You will not have issues if going up 53 then to 169. Superior has nothing to due with the race and you will be south of it if you stay on 53 through Duluth.

Agreed with Pointsetter. If you want to avoid Duluth all together( which may be the best bet) I would hop on highway 2 ,cut across eastbbound on 194 which will bring you to highway 53. Either way.... highway 53N is the way to go

In your case you will take a detour from Hwy 53/535 to Hwy 2 in Superior no matter what because of construction. The north bound lane of the high (Blatnik) bridge is closed. The detour will put you on Interstate 35 for a bit and then you will be back on Hwy 53. You may be slowed down but the race should not have that much impact unless your plan was to go up Hwy 61 to Hwy 1 to Ely.

Thanks for the quick response, guys. 53 to Virginia and 169 to Ely is our usual route and it sounds like those roads won't be affected by the events in duluth. That's good news. I presume the detour around the bridge construction will be well marked. Can't wait to get back to the BWCA.

Thanks OtterWild for the info!!! I think I have the guys coming on the trip convinced to get up and leave my place near Saint Cloud at 2:30 AM so we get to Duluth by at least 5:30 in morning and get up to 61 before too many roads get closed. Other guys have told me that they do have decent detours set up in case I do get stuck in town though.

On another note, I was getting my gear together last night and I couldn't find my snubber for my dipsey rod set-up. How foolish is it to attempt to fish a dipsey without a snubber? I'm still pretty novice at this whole great lakes fishing. Also, if I do need to get a snubber, is there a place to get one in Two Harbors around 6:00 in morning by chance?!

This site is awesome. Thanks guys soooooo much! I'll be sure and post pics and details from the laker action up the shore like I did last year. Last year's biggest from this time of year was 31" and the average was 26".

When you are coming through Superior make sure to stay in the left lane. More than likely there will be cars backed up waiting to make the left on to Hwy 2. Lots of signs and orange cones!!

Around that time of day it will take a few lights to get through.

Wow!!! I was telling my buddies that we were gonna catch our limits of lakers over the weekend.......... Boy was I wrong. Instead we caught 12 salmon and just 2 lakers between 4 guys (2 full timers and 2 part timers due to sea sickness sick). We fished most of the day Saturday and Sunday morning for 3 hours before the waves were too big. Biggest laker was a 39" beast and we caught a very respectable king at 29.5". Half our salmon were kings and the other half were coho. The smallest salmon we kept was 18". Best lure was a standard size Yeck spoon with a glow pearl base and a single orange stripe on a 5 color leadcore set-up. 39" laker even came on this set-up in 110 feet of water! Most fish came on spoons with at least one side of the spoon being a solid glow pearl color. 100 to 110 feet of water. 2 salmon did bite flasher/fly combos too. Below are pics.

29.5" king.

The catch from Saturday morning including a 24" king and a 25" laker.

39" laker! 20 minute battle in 3 foot rollers and only 2 guys in the boat to steer, reel in, net, and organize gear.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
