Lake Superior Fishing Reports

Maybe the most boat I have ever seen at Loons Sunday morning..

Im betting this Sat will beat that. I do hope a lot of people stay away because of Grandmas but with the Lincoln Park contest going Sat as well the river and landings will be packed to the gills.

Took my brother and a friend up to the gitch on Sunday, what a great day we had.

After the 3+ hour drive we put in at McQuade landing and headed for the line.

We stopped out in 120 fow and decided to troll our way there and nothing for two hours except on big bang on the chartruese grama minnow on the board, something ripped it loose and took off and we never even got the rod in hand and it was gone.

found a nice group of fish near the line north off middel creek area were several other boats where working and first 6 lb laker came on the boy-girl michingan stinger on 3 color lead down the shoot. The next hour was pretty busy with five more lakers in the same area on blue husky jerk, chartruese minnow rap, water melon spoon, and the boy-girl stinger again. With one small 2.5 lb King on the far planer clip 125 back on a small clown husky jerk.

things got slow again for an hour or so and then heated up with two big fish lost at the back of the boat one a nicer King and one a 8-9 pound greaser. A couple of more releases on sticks that we think may have been ho's trying to hit bigger baits. Speeding up to 3.1 on a turn and the 20ft rigger with glow watermelon goes off to get another small laker that was released.

That was the deepest fish of the day with only one fish hooked and lost coming from 51 down and 50 back. At this poiint we are batting somewhere around .500 7 for 14.

One more small laker on the smithwick rattlin rouge on the boards that is realeased and one nice 4 pound eater to fill out the greaser limit.

So thats how we ended the day at 9 for 17 would have liked to put that one king in the boat but thats the gitch. with a little wind we may have done better as we could see fish on top moving off as the boat would get close.

I'll post some pics later when I get some time, back to the grind.

Nice job Gutz !

Dave and I got out early but the lake was still a little rougher than what I would like. We caught one nice eater Laker and had 3 hits. All the bites seem to come by the edge of the mud in 70' of water. Water temps ranged from 50 to 55 degrees. We fished mostly along the Mn/WIS line on the Mn side.

Yup but I usually dont start pulling them for a while once the board lines stop producing well. I love a hammered silver dodger/ spin n glow or fly combo with a smelt or gulp on the hooks.

I pulled a green and chrome spin doc and aqua fly for about an hour and nothing fired so I think it's a little early like northlander said.

Loonasea ans I hit the water early this morning and caught 3 nice eater size Lakers before things just shut down and we never had another hit. Spent another 5 hours searching and marking many fish but not so much as a squeal. Foggy and cold almost the whole entire time we were out. Just about washed the entire tackle box clean winkshocked

Early in the year they are very common in shallow, later they get harder to find. I would say I get at least 1 every time or every other time out when Im actually targeting them.

The past few years it seems there are more than there has been in a long time.

Its no Lake Michigan but its ok.

I manage to get a small one about every other trip.

The biggest near Duluth has only been 5 lbs or so.

Theres been a lot of bigger kings in the 12-18# range caught this year but they are few and far between. Average would be about 6 or 7 pounds Im guessing.

I have had more like a 1.5 to 3 pound average for kings this year. Hard to tell them apart from a coho. Hopefully there will be more and bigger kings soon. On a positive note there seems to be 3 to 5 lb lakers everywhere.

The fish dont want to leave the surface this year. Seems like they are going farther out in the lake instead of going down in the water column. Running 14 miles out in baha is making for some expensive salmon .

Yep, thats what I've found as well.

I gave a shout on the radio Sunday for ya but no come back where you on the water?

I fished the line most of the day except for and hour or so in front of the pumphouse.

Everything was on top, even with flat water and high sun.

Yeah I was out there on Sunday for a few hours fishing the Lester area. Fished the line the other day in the heavy fog and did way better. Two of us got 11 fish in a little over an hour once we found them. Only 3 salmon and the rest lakers. I usually have the music radio on louder the VHF radio so I don't always hear it.

My old man and myself are gonna give the big lake a go tomorrow. Haven't been out in a few weeks and just wondering what depths you guys are targeting now? Are the fish still up top? Thanks in advance.

The lake has been too rough to fish for the past week but I would guess that the top water would still be good. Watch you graph and the water color until they hit.

Anyone plan on fishing for walleyes in the lake this weekend?

If its not like chocolate milk wich Im guessing it will be. If you have been fishing in this weather the past week or so you have a much bigger boat and set of ----- than me. Or really dumb! wink

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.
