Lake Superior Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Yeah that was him. I wasn't positive on the boat, but boy was he getting tossed by the waves. We stayed out as long as we could just to make sure he didn't get thrown out or sunk. laugh

One year while launching out of Two Harbors, I watched a guy launch a 16 foot tiller narrow boat when the waves weren't too bad but bad enough for me not to go out if I had a narrow boat like that.

The Fish Gods should have rewarded him just for bravery

I think I'm going to give up trying to get out on her this spring. The one chance I thought I had was Friday and the wind kicked up.

Fished the Duluth entry today from 2 to 6 with no luck. There was a fair amount of wind but it was nice to have the lake to ourselves. Only 2 onboard so we ran 4 stick baits on boards for most of the trip. Water temp was around 38 and pretty clear.

i have a feeling you guys are talking about me lol. im the one with the 70s lund that was out in the rough stuff last friday. that was absolutely the roughest water iv ever been in but the ol lund can take a hell of a beating. that was my first time fishing off wisconsin point so i think i did pretty good with the 2 28inch browns and a coho. those were my first brown trout ever too so i was pretty pumped. im always open for passengers if your brave enough hit me up.

Welcome to the forums arctispirit. Yes two 28 inch browns is kind of unheard of. Heck I've been fishing out there 4yrs now and haven't caught one out of my boat. I saw you retrieve your board. With those waves that was a needle in a haystack. Glad you made it off safe. On another note gonna head out tomorrow afternoon. I'll report back after. Should be considerably calmer. laugh

I took that picture! You deserved those fish for braving those conditions! lol. Good work, just make sure you're being safe out there.

Seems to be a lot of Browns around lately. I saw several guys come in with them yesterday. Myself I only got 1 laker yesterday but this morning managed 2 coho and 2 browns. Had to travel away from the entry a ways to find them but it was worth it. Plus it was good to let the old Yamaha run WOT for a while.

Thanks for the tip on the skunk Cheffrey it worked out. wink

Missed what was probably one of those Browns tonight. Smacked a dipsey rig and was pulling out line with the reel almost locked. Pulled the rod out of the holder and reached down to loosen the drag (should have done this first). At that moment it hit the top of the water. Did a couple of quick shakes and was gone. Seeing an 8ft Shimano Talora bend over in an instant will get your heart going. That was the only action on the lake. Did end up with a fish though as the other guy with me hit the rivers before hand and had a nice looper for me. Doesn't seem to be as many bait fish around this year, compared to the same time last year. Different to see all these Browns, I saw a couple at the landing too.

Water is still cold. Theres a few around but not like last season.

im guessing the fish that had your dipsy rod doubled over was a king! not a brown, they tend to not hit dipsys

Do people catch Atlantic salmon in the Duluth area? Or do i have a better chance of catching a bull shark in the Mississippi?

Would like to add another species. Goin by state record fish. I know there are no kokanee salmon left just wondering about Atlantic.

I think your odds are better sharkin'...haven't heard of an atlantic for a long while now.

Do they exist in any fishable numbers in the other great lakes?

there has been a stocking program in lake ontario in 2007. they have since seen video of the salmon running up the humber river in toronto. i have no idea if fishing is available at this time. they were native to lake ontario in the 18th and 19th century buy were eliminated by overfishing and habitat loss by heavy lumber production creating dams and even beaver dams in some cases. good luck.

Anyone find a folding fillet knife on the Loon's Foot fish cleaning table on Saturday or Sunday? Pretty sure I left my buddy's brand new knife sitting in the corner of the table after cleaning fish Saturday around 2. Figured I'd throw something up here to see if someone snagged it and would be interested in helping a guy out!

Thanks!

-Chris

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.
