Went fishing today with the St. Cloud guys and had a good time. The fishing was not hot but it was with good company. Rick G  caught a nine and three-quarter inch bluegill. I guy has enough fish for a fish fry know. I got a couple gills that were very close to the 9 inch Mark. Tom caught fair number of gills in the 9 inch range. I hope to do this again what a great bunch of guys from St. Cloud.

I feel bad for anyone who still has a permanent shack out anywhere in the state. That rain and warm temperature has really made removal a safety challenge. Be safe out there my Friends.

Made it out yesterday morning to little horseshoe east of Cambridge, started out shallow searching for crappies and gills. We found some little gills and crappies. Tried for couple hours and couldn't get the big ones to bite, so off to horseshoe we went. Started on the north end finding a lot of gills and some crappies. Didn't catch to many nice ones in the afternoon so moved a little south on the lake and found some nicer ones In 12-20 fow but only a few, threw them back and left at dark. The crappies where pretty finicky had to work for them, but the gills would hit the tungsten's before I could get my line all the way down. Heres the biggest and smallest crappies I got. And one of the 7 inch gills I got. Good day for quantity not quality.

Went out on a couple local area lakes to find some gills. I picked up alot of 6-8 inchers on waxies and euro larvae. The shore lines are going fast. Found 8-10 inches of soft ice, getting scary out there be careful.

My daughter and I took the boat out for the first time this season yesterday on a Cambridge area lake. Water is still very cold - main lake was 40-41 degrees. Crappies definitely haven't made any shallow movements yet. I checked a few shallow spawning spots and water temp was only 43-44 degrees. Nothing was going on shallow so we went deep. Found big schools of crappies in the main lake basin. Everything we caught was 35-41 FOW. Almost all were caught on a drop shot rig/minnow or Rapala Jigging Rap. The jigging rap seemed to work best though, the fish were more aggressive with that then the minnow. Was fun to get out with the long rods for a change!

Made it out to long lake yesterday and managed to find a few crappies. Forgot my depth finder but they were are out a little deeper, we weren't close to shore. Got a couple on worms, most on minnows. We got rained on but that's when they were biting the best!

Got out yesterday for the first time this year on open water, on an area lake, found a pocket on the edge of a weed line, got into some nice perch and came across a few nice gills. All where caught on waxies and crawlers in 6-10 ft of water on all gold ice jigs. Got a couple perch over 10 inches and a couple gills at or over 9 inches.

The weed bite on green is strong. 5 to 8 feet of water is the area to find some eyes at low light.

Smallies on the Rum  are eating anything and everything. Walleyes are being taken as well but the bite seems to be limited to short windows.

Little Elk is giving up some keeper gills.

Lori lake is still giving up some eyes and crappies.

Green has been hit or miss for eyes crappies have fairly easy to find.

large mouth bass are biting on Spec, Green, Blue, Lori, and littleElk

Well I found out a moose in a kayak means a wet moose!! Riverrat got a good laugh!! The fish did not bite well for us but we tried. It was rats idea to take me to slake to learn to kayak first before we hit the rim! Good idea I think I would have died on the rum. We want the water to come down some more before we hit the river. Anyone know of big kayak for me like a bass boat lol! No pictures were taken cause we would have lost them.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
