Sturgeon Excursion 2010 April 16-18

How much weight were you having to use to stay put. Last year it was taking 8 oz to stay put. Years past it had always work well with 3 oz. What did you all find. Looking forward to getting up there next weekend.

Verrrry little curret, I was pretty much vertical with a 3/4s ounce.

I tried a 3oz and it seemed to hold fine. I started out with a 5oz. If I was fishing in heavier current it took the 5oz.

No, haha. I like to have a weight that if I keep letting line out the current will keep pulling it down river. I feel like its more sensitive. But back when we were walleye fishing a couple weeks ago, we were using 3/8ths.

It was a "different year. Fun yes, but I think the early melt hurt us. Biggest Sturgie was 47, an average caught fish the past two years. Lot's of juvie's caught. The weather was un beatable as well as the company. Great time, boy's are looking forward to 2011. I know I am BC

Got back today from our long weekend up there.

The fishing was very slow compared to years past, but still got into some fish.

I didn't hit the 60 mark this year, but a few in the 50's. Wastewaterguru was up there with us too and they did much better further upstream with 3 over sixty and several over 50 all in one day.

The weather was outstanding, and I guess we'll have to try a bit harder next time and find some fish, as the area from the bay upstream to Shusters was about as slow as it can get.

It's really hard to put into words the definition of this trip. The word slow comes to mind for sure...but??? Is that just because we've been spoiled with #'s in the past? By far, this year's average size surpassed all the previous years although we never put in any over 64" like we did the past 2 years. Generally speaking, we're not looking for numbers anyways. Giants is the goal. As far as I'm concerned, goal attained.

I made sure to level set the expectations for this trip. I spent hours researching and following the reports from others. It was obvious Mother Nature gave us an early spring which forced us to fish up river from our normal spot (4-mile bay on LOTW). IMO, the River was the place to be, and it paid off.

In the order they were caught....

1st fish of the trip. 56" 42lb caught out of Clementson.

2nd fish 51.5" caught in the Gap

4th fish 50.5"

Saturday was awesome for us. We decided to pioneer a trip clear up to the Little Fork (which is the trib where most of the Rainy River sturgeon spawn). We fished right near mile marker 8, meaning we were 8 miles downstream of International Falls. We caught all 5 fish in a 3 hour time frame. Considering each fish is ~30min fight, we rarely had our lines in the water.

On Sunday we tried the same spot near the Little Fork. Not near as much luck. Another boat was in our spot and they pulled 5 nice fish while we could only watch. Andy did get a nice one thou.

Ended the trip with 19 sturgeon in my boat (2 guys for 5 days), but we had 8 fish over 50". We never had a goose egg day, but some boats certainly did. Most fish caught in one day was 5 for us.

I personally had an outstanding year. 6 fish over the trophy mark with a personal best of 59.25" (although it was snagged near the tail which made for a hell of a fight)

All I can say is AWESOME, Great job Tyler. We tried up river just at the vidas landing (where you guys got the quadruple) but only suckers in there again. I think we did catch one small sturgeon. A guy was on the ramp and caught a 53 and a 49. Go figure. Oh well another great year of battling the great sturgeon and everyone made it home safe. Another great STURGEON year bud, hope to see you up next year............Kirk

If I were a betting man, I'd say the weekend after Walleyes close on the Rainy River.
