It was my first year up there and def. will not be the last. Got about 11 hours of sleep from Th-Sun and that only made it more interesting. Plenty of laughs, jokes, and pranks. Since I got home it feels weird drinking water. Only 365 more days!

That is a beast! That's the one I'm looking for.

Can't wait to wet a line up there. Were most fish being caught in the bay or up river this weekend.

We did our best in the Gap. River only put small fish in the boat for us.

Saturday was so calm, it shut the bite down. Who woulda thought Sturgeon like the walleye chop!

Simply put... "What a blast"!! Thanks to all the SC guys for a great "lifetime" exsperience that will never be forgotten. Matt for sharing his boat, Nick for handing off his rod, and everyone, for the non-stop laughs. Already looking forward to next year!

You mean the Gap way out across the Bay? I think people confuse the mouth of the Rainy there with the Gap which is out a few miles by the island, so just checking.

Thanks

Anyone do any night fishing?

That fish is a tank!

2010 Sturgeon Excursion was Great Fun as always.

Fri was slow for us, battling the wind sort of dictated where we set up in the river.

Sat the wind died down and fishing improved for us in Four Mile as we boated 7 Sturgeon, 47" was our biggest but broke off 2 big ones. Fished late enough to watch a beautiful sunset.

Sunday morning we were back at Four Mile and boated 11 fish right off the bat then things slowed down and we were off the river by 11:30 and packed up and headed home.

47" was our biggest for the weekend with several others in the 40's. Compared to previous S E's the fish were smaller and not as numerous. Still as said earlier it was a great trip for us.

Did anyone fish further up stream, around Baudette?

A group of 5 of us are headed up April 30 - May 2... it's going to be a long wait!

My group had a great time again this year. We caught a lot of 43-53" fish this year, one tagged fish, and went through about 10 cases of beer. I can't wait to get back up there and fish with all you guys again. Here is my biggest of the trip at 55 x 24

And Ryan with his biggest and PB at 57"

Good to see you again Ed. Your phone will be ringing when I find some time to get out on the river.

Also, thank you to Jon Thelen of Lindy for a complimentary Splash Brite bobber and even a few Shadling's.

We fished the river and it was not the place to be. Some small fish but that was it.

I did manage to pick up two in the 49" range but it was slow in the river.

Eric's wife Justine did manage to catch 6 sturgeon with her largest going approx 41".

Were you guys just using plain hooks? We have always done good with these big spinners we made, but had a heck of a time getting any on them this weekend, we tried shiners, worms, and combos of both.

Yes. And a gob or a 'chandelier' of crawlers. 5+.

Saw a few guys using spinners out of other boats in the flotilla.

I'm a little late, as usual, but holy cow was that fun!!!!!

I got out fished by pretty much everyone but I don't really care. The weather was awesome, the company was great, the accomodations at Wig-Wam were top notch, the beer was cold and delicious, and a good time was had by all.

My wife got to wrangle her first sturgeon and that was a hoot.

Is it next year yet?????

Hello to all Sturgeon fisherman, If your headed that way make sure you stop by and buy a raffle ticket at Cenex in Baudette to win a 2010 Crestliner fishing boat. The money goes towards putting on the Governors opener on Kabetogama. Tickets are 5 bucks a piece and the boat is worth $30,000. We have sold about 7000 ticket, so it's pretty decent odds of winning a very nice boat equipped with a 150 Optimax. Let me know if you have any questions if not you can see the boat parked at Cenex in Baudette.

We fished on the River Friday morning and didn't have any luck, then fished in the Bay the rest of the weekend and managed 11 sturgeon and about a half dozen walleyes. Our biggest sturgeon was 67" x 30" and the largest walleye was 30.5". Great weather for fishing, especially Saturday!!

Lonnie, are you awake?????

I wonder if Lonnies ear is feeling better. Late Saturday Me, Cake, lonnie, Herm thought it would be a good idea to have wrestling matches in the cabin. Somehow lonnies ear started to bleed. Gotta love the Sturgeon Excursion. On a side not Lonnie is a scrapper.

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.

I found this dock wheel floating in Black Bay. If it's yours or you know whom it belongs to, go and grab it.

Most years for opener I drive up on Thursday. This year it was Friday afternoon so I figured bait would be tight. The only place that I stopped was L&M in Virginia. They said that they sold out of rainbows by 11am. I got crappie minnows and never needed the rainbows. All my walleye were caught dragging raps. The crappie minnows....well, you know what they caught.

Did you have any luck?     I got a bird but didn’t really do much for pics worth showing.
