Medicine Lake Fishing Reports

On Sun, tried the 30ish ft hole out from the access on the W side and no fish. Didn't even mark any. The folks around me reported the same. Strange because there are usually a gazillion tiny crappies in that hole every winter.

fished on 1/1/15 from about 9am-1pm. drilled holes from 7 fow to 30 fow. found perch in 7 fow. marked fish in 11 fow for a couple hours but very hard to catch. very tight lipped. was away from the crowd in front of bait shop.

6-8 fow sightfishing in the weeds. Find somewhere away from groups drill a big hole and watch the schools of fish come in right below your feet. A lot of fun and a very good way to keep a kid interested.

Clear enough to see bottom in 8', don't really know if that's what you're looking for I don't spear.

Okay, that's all good stuff, might have to venture out then! Is that French Regional Park a public access? Or is there a better north end access?

Not sure about French access. We used the park (East Medicine Lake Park) and just walked on. Not a bad walk to where you want to be depth wise.

The front started to come thru around 2:30 yesterday (wind switched from SE to NW) so if you were fishing around that time I'm not surprised it was a tough bite. When conditions are more favorable, I'd go back to that spot and I bet you'll have much better luck.

Joe opened the gate outside his bait shop this morning. Be sure and leave some tips in the jar inside the bait shop. I really want this guy to stay in business. Bait shops are increasingly difficult to find and you can't get any more convenient than his location for Medicine Lake.

He seems to be a great guy too and willing to share what he knows about the lake.

12-18 inches of ice

Seriously? I was fishing a lake not far from there and only had 10" surprised there is that big of a difference.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got a Pike question...

First off, I am 100% C/R. I actually live about 5 minutes from the Lake, but spend my time fishing Minnetonka mostly.

I hit the south end weed flats last week, and did get a nice 30" Pike. I have a few hrs tomorrow afternoon, and was thinking of doing some exploring - would it be wise just to stick to these flats, or are there other areas that might be wise to explore?

Thanks.

if your looking for the northern i would say stick with what works. as far as exploring, i say go for it. i have been on the south flats, no success, the ease and south east side with perch. i walked over to a 30 foot hole by the banana bar with little craps. the bait shop guy says the walleye are in there, but where is another question. good luck and let me know if you have any luck.

Never tried spearing on the lake. I'd love to as I don't live too far from Medicine. I hear the north end has the best spearing?

I have heard it's because of the drought. I know in my area ( meeker co.) the sloughs that they trap minnows in have dried up.
    • SkunkedAgain
Excuse my ignorance, but was is driving the bait prices? Usually the shortage is due to a late ice-out from the swamps and streams. This year should have been much better.

I should probably learn to use the 6+ containers of lures I have collecting dust in my tackle box. We got on a decent crappie bite the last couple of evenings and I broke out some plastics.  I caught some crappies on them ,just need to build my confidence in using them! I did notice they didn't seem to hold on to them as long as minnows!

      Great news, thank Skunked

Minnows are 50 cents each, and leeches are $50 a pound.
    • SkunkedAgain
Absolutely. I get full bars all-along the drive from Cook to The Landing, and out into Head O Lakes bay. I can't say that I've stared much at my phone signal anywhere else besides on my way to Black Bay. We still don't get much for service there because there are a lot of steep slopes with tall trees in the way. That was expected though. The tower is definitely providing better service to the area in general IMO.
    • PSU
Any updates on this new tower? Has it helped AT and T customers throughout the lake get better service?

Thanks for the heads up. Cigar.

The price will blow your mind if they get some

Went in to Lucky 7 to get some crappie minnows today. All they had were crappie minnows and fatheads. She said to call in advance for the opener, couldn't say for sure if they'd have rainbows, shiners, etc for opener!
