How was the ice and what part of the lake were you on? I wanna get out there with my 4 wheeler, easy lake to get to, not too far from me in town. I had ok results last year, be nice to have a close lake that is enjoyable.

I had the wheeler out on Wed., there was about 6" - 7" of ice. We went out the north access and fished on the left hand side, between 9 ft and 12 ft of water. Tonight we are going to venture out and try a little deeper water.

AHHHH! FINALLY found the crappies! Took 4 times out, and lots of moving around! I just hope it wasn't only cause the storm was moving in. But had a blast, limited out on keepers. Nice 10" - 12" and fatties! They tasted good today. Wish we could be back out there today, just can't brave the storm!

A buddy and I already have plans on heading to Blue tomorrow morning. So a update on conditions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Was on blue thurs morning 8-9 inches of ice, couldn't tell if the ice was sinking. Some areas with alot of slush but found plenty of spots to drill holes with no slush. There was one small pickup and a few 4 wheelers driving around. We caught a few gills in the morning but my buddies did real well after 12 of course when I left. No crappies

I was out on Blue on the 21st. Bite was slow, a spring bobber is a must. Caught 1 keeper Crappie and 3 keeper sunnies. Crappie was 10 1/2, sunnies 8+. Marked quit a few but they were very finaki. The lake is going to take some time before safe vehicle traffic. There are many areas that have 3 inches of water/slush above the 7-9 inches of ice. Other areas have the 8-10 inches of snow to keep the ice insulated. Good luke to anyone headed out.

Lots of water on top of the ice. Sloppy out there now. about 9 inches of ice everywhere I've checked.

Good luck fishing!

Not Much has changed. I was out on the 27Th and anywhere from 3" to 5" of slush on the Ice makes moving around a hassle. I set up on the south side of the lake and did OK despite the slushy conditions. My brother and I caught about 30+ sunfish from 3-8PM all around 10", a few small crappies, and a walleye about 18". The only way to get the sunfish was to the smallest jig in my box (smaller than 1/64oz) and one euro larva. for those of you that don't fish ultra light a spring bobber is a must!Good Luck Fishin!

Was out on Dec 28th, nailed the crappies! Brought home 20 between 2 of us, 10" - 12 1/2". Threw away at least 15 10 inchers, didn't want to go over our limit! had to find them, but once we did, had a blast!

I hit blue tonite for a short time. didn't find the fish. Every where i drilled though the ice was only about 11 inches measured with a tape measure. I would say only about the bottom 6 was good clear ice and the top 5 was white frozen [PoorWordUsage] ice. I would be careful I saw a lot of full size pick ups driving and they would make water come out of my holes from over 100 feet away. Be safe. ice was popping though so were makin it now. easy pull by hand with all the snow gone and the slush frozen.

jense822,

You caught 30 sunfish on Blue Lake that measured 10 inches? I've been summer fishing out there for about 6 years and haven't seen one legit 10" fish come out of there. The panfish on that lake get hit so hard in the summer and winter. The numbers are there, but the size is not. At least not for me...

I caught a 8" inch out there last nite measured nose to unpinched tail on a stanley tape measure. It was the biggest i caught. Only caught 5 fish. A 6 inch a 7 inch the the 8 inch gill and a 8 inch perch.

Juan don't take a bit of info from people on this lake when they measure their fish......trust me when I tell you there are only a handfull of crappies over 11" inches in this lake and there are very few sunnies that go over 8".......I think I have caught almost every panfish in the lake and have know most by name (LOL) and there aren't many that are big out there!!! People just don't know how to properly measure.....

Juan and Ozzie! I agree it probably was over exaggeration about him catching 30 sunfish measuring 10", maybe he meant that he caught 1 measured at 10". Within the last 2 weeks I have pulled lots of crappies out that were 11" plus, the biggest being 12.5". And a friend of mine caught 1 sunfish that was close to a pound (yes, I was jealous)! The fish are there, but you have to find them and keep chasing! I to have been fishing that lake all year round since I was in grades school, so that means hmmm, lets just say over 20 years! Gosh, I hope I didn't give my age away! LOL I would like to find the walleyes! Anyone have any luck on Blue with them recently?

I don't want to get into a measuring squable with you fishergurl but I sure would like to see a tape measure to those crappies that are over 11"........I am sorry I don't believe people when they say they catch 11"+ crappies out of blue especially multiple crappies over 11" when between 4-5 boats in the summer and many hours in fish houses during the winter and catch 1000's of crappies that I have only seen a handfull of them caught I just don't trust people when they report 11-12" crappies caught cause many times they even show pictures with the fish at 11" with the mouth open or the tail a 1/2" from the edge of the tape....to each there own you know what you measure and I will beleive it when I see it properly measured....Good Luck out there I know the crappies are good tasting out there

Ozzie I tend to agree with you considering this lake is one of your favorite. Maybe your trying to scare away the masses from ruining another lake in our area, just joking. I have been fishing this lake and little Elk for a few years and the size of the fish are more 6-8" gills and 8-10" crappies rather then 8-10" and 10-12". Its funny I fished Elk today and the crappies where more like 6-8" if lucky and a few gills that where maybe 7". The action was non stop but the fish where small. Maybe later in the day the bigger fish come around but I really doubt it. I think we all tend to talk stories when we fish so maybe the fish today I caught where even smaller then I reported. Good Luck everybody and avoid the masses on both lakes

I actually like to try to get people on crappies on Blue as I want to see if the quality would go up with the population going down but I haven't seen a change in either in the last 6 years I have been fishing this lake...like I said beleive what you want but unless the fish are in a picture with a ruler behind it I will remain skeptic about 11"+ crappies on Blue...Good Luck to all

Ozzie when you do catch those 11+ inch crappies do they go in your bucket or back down the hole?

If I can figure out how to get a picture from my phone to my computer I'll post a dark image of an 8 inch gill from blue.

Yep, Ozzie is the crappie machine on that lake. He's got a pattern down that you can catch them hand over fist. I think about 90% of the crappies I catch are what I call "Blue Lake Specials" and are around 7-8 inches. Every now and then you'll pick one up that might be close to 10" but they're not very common.

Sunnies are same way, tons of them but most of them are 6" or under. You can catch a nice limit of 7-8" fish if you sort.

I think Blue is a good panfish lake, but it's only 300 acres and between the two launches and the camper park it gets a lot of pressure.

I have to agree with fishergurl lately the crappies seem alot bigger. We've caught a bunch that were 11"+. Much bigger than 2 or 3 years ago for sure.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
