Hi all, just wanted to post that I was out on lake demontraville today and had a blast in 8 to 10 FOA with the panfish. Not really any I wanted to keep but there were a lot there. Fun times. Ice was really noisy today as well. Not sure why?

Posted

most places over 12"

The ice is loud cuz it's making more ice! The ice groans and cracks under the pressure.

Yeah I realize that but it was louder than usual.

I have also been out on Demontreville a couple times this week and I can attest to the abundance of groans and cracks. LOTS of ice, but still odd.

Two evenings ago I caught quite a few SMALL 'gills, a small bass, one 8-9" crappie and two northerns with one pushing 30". Best bite was from about 2 -5 pm.

This morning set up in a similar spot and hammered the little 'gills again, and this time caught two bass (one of em was 15-16"), and an 11" crappie! Lost one big fish that I assume was a northern due to the line it was peeling off my reel! We were out from around 10am - 1:30pm. Most of the action was around 11am.

My most successful jig today was a diamond jig, plated in nickel with 3 or 4 eurolarvae, while they were hitting the same jig with crappie minnows two days ago. Setup in about 9 - 12 FOW.

Anyone know what the regulations are for keeping northern on this lake?

Dave, I sent you an email!

Ive been out quite a bit the past few weeks as well and agree between 2-6pm seems to the best bite. Ill be out tomorrow as well. Ill be the crazy one without a portable, sitting on a bucket in a bright red jacket....stop by and say hi if your out!

no special regs for northerns but there are for bass, catch and release only.

pike fishing this year i caught 2 20" bass the second fish inhaled my treble hooks. He was going to die so i keep it, i felt pretty bad.

So i won't be targeting pike on this lake again.

chewynoeyes - Try using circle hooks or single J hooks if you want to avoid hurting bass when fishing a tip-up. I hate cleaning pike but I like catching them so I use hooks that are easier to get out of the fish. Circle hooks miss more pike than a treble but some hookups are better than none. The circle hook is designed to hook a fish in the corner of the mouth but I find with pike they are most of the time hooked in the lower lip in the middle. I think the geometry of a pikes mouth is so different from other fish that that is how the circle hook works. With a circle hook, do not set the hook. Just stop the line and start pulling in the fish like you would after setting a normal hook. J hooks will still hook the fish deep but if you cut the line, I think the fish will have an OK chance of survival unless it is really bleeding. Same thing with a treble hook. If the fish is deep hooked, just cut the line. Once the fish is in the bucket, he has no chance. By the way, don't tell anyone how big the bass are in that lake. It is my lake to fish when I do not have time to go further from home. cool

Anybody been out to Demontreville lately? I am taking some friends from church out next Saturday with our kids. I know that the Bluegill are small, but they bite and that will keep the kids interested. Looking for latest ice conditions if anyone has been out there. Thanks in advance.

Have not been to Demo but other lakes in the area are plenty good for ice. Are you driving onto the ice? The landing to get out can get tough with such a steep grade.

Posted

No planning on walking myself. Just did not know if the adverse weather the last few days would dramatically impact the ice.

Anyone see the truck in the NW corner of Demontreville? When I drove by at 6AM it looked like the front wheels were in the water. The water is shallow where the truck is and it looks like it was stuck pretty good. Is the ice thin in that area because of the runoff from the little swamp across the road? That is why I never drive anyplace where other trucks have not gone before me.

Interesting Ive drove on that lake before without any issues....now this has me thinking....

I have shacks out there, don't go too close to the northern shores, there are springs coming in and making the ice very unstable. if you are going to venture out to the back side of the lake, hug the right side of the shoreline around the point.

Has anyone been out to demontreville at all? i heard the boat ramp was in pretty bad shape. From what i heard it would be almost impossible to get a bass boat in there. Does anyone know if the DNR will ever get out there and dig it out. I might have to bring a shovel out there my self and do some work...i love fishing this lake.

Last time I was on this lake we decided to canoe that day and left the bass boat at home. Two teenage kids in a 14'-16' jon boat came full speed towards us. The passenger yelled, "Hey watch out for those guys in the canoe." The driver replies, "Who cares about those gooks." (Sound travels well across the water) Thanks passenger for not being a Deutsch!! Anyway, have not heard any updates on this ramp.

Posted

wow...i would have threw my paddle at them!!!

Posted

Just when you think the human race has progressed in civil equality. crazy Glad to hear it didn't end up any worse. I'd give a call to the owner of the ramp (city, DNR etc.) and mention that the ramp is unusable.

Posted

The ramp is very shallow right now because the lake is down about 2.5 - 3 feet (maybe more). They dug it out a bit last year but even if they dig it out deeper, it will still be shallow past the ramp because the lake level is so low. The power loading does not help much since the hump behind the ramp is too big. If you have a smaller boat that you can crank onto the trailer, you will be fine but you may need to angle your trailer to the east at the end of the ramp. With the water so low, you may not see too many ski boats out on the lake this year since they will not be able to use the ramp. The Lake Jane ramp is even worse and the DNR can not even put the dock in.

That comment to the guys in the canoe is not right but I wish they had some more prominent sings at the ramp saying all bass must be released and maybe the sign needs to be in a couple of other languages. I have seen a lot of bass in buckets and on stringers at this lake over the last couple of years. Every time I say something to the offender, I get a strange look and they stare at the sign like they can not tell what it says. I now call Brad Johnson 651-646-8200 - the local CO - whenever I see a bass on a stringer or in a bucket and I try to get a picture with my phone. I do not know if he has come out for the two times I have called this year but I feel like I am doing my part to keep this lake a good bass lake.

application has been submitted. 👍   Leech......i've shot my share of bear......it be nice to get another but not the end of the world if i dont. i get to spend time with my son...its just another way to get into the woods. i've been at it since about 1976......that rush when you walk up to the bait and see the logs scattered all over and bait gone just doesnt get old for me.   i had to get rid of 1 rug because of bad tanning. i have another rug, shoulder mount and made 3 pillows from 2 different bear hides. my biggest issue has become what to do with the hide....that seems more of a trophy then the meat. i inquired 1 year at the Alex decoy show when there were a couple hide guys there and they didnt seem to interested. 🙄 i have no other ideas for the hide.......approval from the wife is not even negotiable!!!!!

aw that date is fine and maybe someday we will have beer!!!

Something in May, like around Opener.  Could be white knuckles for boaters that weekend with the way things stalled out since the contest started and how thick it still is.   Highs in the 50’s coming but lows are around freezing and not a lot of wind in the extended forecast.   I’ll tell  ya what, if you change from 4/26 and it hits that date, I’ll buy ya some mythical FM beer.  And you know where you can find it. 😉. But don’t change on my account - this is still a free country!

I caught the 10pm news the other night. They said that starting next week Minnesota will be above average for temps. I give them a 33% chance of getting that right.
