shed hunting

mooneyes, it is a good hobby, maybe in all of this snow it might be tougher sleddin, just figure out where you plan to look and then find out if they have shed yet. I used to think man it's tough finding sheds well the bucks in my area roughly 90% hadn't lost them yet, our trailcams are a great help, still waiting for them to begin, about mid-march is prime time from then on in my area. Don't go too soon but the spring thaw can really mess up shed hunting in my area if it comes too soon. My window to find them is short. Speaking of bucks saw 2 big ones Saturday at 2:00pm east of Akeley, 1 was shed the other wasn't, it was nice to see a couple really good bucks and nicer yet I didn't connect with them on the highway, just kinda daydreaming along and deer!!!!!!!! Screech........

shedaddict: I would love to be able to share some pictures, but I'm rather illiterate on the computer and havn't figured out how yet! I know it's probably simple but just havn't figured it out yet.

And mooneyes...as far as ticks, I don't want to scare you, but they will be out sooner than you think. In the spring of '08 while there was still a lot of snow on the ground, in a matter of a couple outings I pulled 15+ deer ticks off my dog and 10 off of me. Last year was the same. I actually stopped bringing my pooch with me cuz they were so bad. Amazing that they're out in the snow. And what's really funny is that it's deer ticks, the wood ticks don't show up til summer.

And sad news is that in the last 36 hours we got a LOT of snow, so my shed hunting will be delayed by a week or two at least. Though on bright note, a buddy saw a good 10 this weekend. That was the only buck with a rack he's seen in well over a month! So most of ours are buried. Now it will be who's there first when the snow melts.

Not much going with all the snow.

Do any of you guys moose shed hunt? I've been thinking of giving that a go this spring.

I would love to hunt moose sheds. Been thinking about going out west to look for elk sheds. Several posts ago there were some that thought it odd to pay to look for sheds, but I love it. And I also love elk, though being from Iowa that's ironic. My work has me bound so far. But if things go well, in the next few years I will be shedding around the country....wishful thinking.

On a bright note, was out for less than 2 hours today and found a nice 4 and a neat 5pt. All i know is that if you're looking in NE Iowa, you're working your butt off for your bone!!! I was in an open field with snow well over my knees. One I found had a 10 inch g-2, and all that was sticking out was a bit of that!!! Gotta Love It!!!!

What do you guys do with the sheds after you find them and get them home. You just throw them in a box make something out of them hang them. I guess what I am saying is I got a bunch here and there around the house but kind sick of looking at them just laying there. So what do you guys do with them?? Pics would be great to see.

Right now, I have them all hanging in the garage, but once I build a cabin, I will use them for various things throughout the cabin. I know one guy that made a chandelier light out of an old wagon wheel and then hung all the antlers from that; it turned out really well. Sorry, no pics.

I am still in the planning process, cause i only have a few sheds. I am going to take a crack at making a couple of lamps for the cabin, and maybe a small chandelier. I might try and use some of the smaller sheds for handles and what not on drawers and cabinets.

Went out in ND for the first time this year today. Looked for close to 6 hours without any luck. Found some awesome yarding areas and trails though so once the snow melts its game on

More snow for us sunday-monday, a few inches, plus blowing. So now I'm chomping at the bit big time. Once the snow melts it's a race with the rodents!

I make windchimes with a few of mine. I will never sell any I find, so the windchimes I make I give away as gifts, either for holiday or I gave a couple to landowners for permission. I carve their name in the antler and make a chime out of it. W/O pics it's hard to describe. I also have shelves with antlers. I have "mood" lights around the top of my living room with antlers hanging on them. Basically they are x-mas rope lights with antlers hanging off. I do have several sets that I plan on getting full mounts of also. To say I'm an antler addict is an understatement!

I believe I followed the instructions from Steve on posting this picture. If not, I will try another way.

These are from my 8 year old and I walking for about 3 hours this last weekend. My son doesn't seem to like hunting too much, but he seems to really like this! He has only asked me six times if we can go out this weekend also! Next time I will also have to put something else in the pic also so you can appreciate the size. These are very, very thick. we found them about 100 yards from eachother. Lots of similarities, not positive about a match.

Wow! Nice racks...he he he.

Question - how often do you look over the same areas when you have already found sheds in that area?

Nice work. About looking over the same areas more than once, I usually go in throughout february and march and let the sign in the snow tell me where they are wintering and traveling and then go back into those areas once the snow is gone. If I am positive an antler is in there than I will go in more than once but if it turns out to be not as good as I thought when the snow was there than I am wasting my time

as much as you possibly can before the next snow!

i like to look an area over throughly; which means hours! variety is nice, but if you know that a certain area is holding deer (sheds) why move?

Went out today until I wore out the webbing on my snowshoes, one foot knee deep in snow, the other on top. But it was all worth it when I found 4 sheds, 1 matched pair, looks to be about a 120-130" deer.

I have been shed hunting for several years, and never found any until last year when I found a small 2 and 3 pt. This year Im out for a half an hour and find 4 with a matched set.

Will try and post pics later.

We'll try these pics and see if it works.

These are the one found today while I was out for about a 1/2 hour:

These were the only ones I found all of last year.

Guess thats the way it goes. It was fun getting out. Need to get the shoes fixed so I can get out again.

Half hour and thats all you found?? Wow you need a new area but can you tell me where you were at?? Yah I finally broke my funk I was in last year. I had a 2 year dry spell still dunno how it happened but it does keep at it. Oh yah nice finds.

The two smaller sheds were on top of the snow, after we had 2 days of heavy wind on Sunday/Monday. Im guessing they had fallen in the last day or two.

The matched set was found with just the tips sticking out of the snow.

Fireman - A nice find for 1/2 hour!

Thanks for the info everyone.

I just received permission to walk a private refuge. Can't wait till Saturday. It should be fun for my new 9 year old "shed addict" and I to search a fresh area.

I tried a new area last night in a state forest and when I got there, there was already 10 guys going through the cornfield and it's surrounding trails and edges. I guess I'll wait for area 240 to get going, keep getting full racked buck reports but it will be game on soon enough, if the weather holds for awhile that will help finding them.

Nice work Fireman, I wouldnt have expected Glyndon bucks to have dropped them yet. I might have to head up to the cabin sooner that i later. catch fish and find shed could make for a fun weekend.

I am going to try a woods in the Cities now. I will report after.

Good Luck Savre, my Fridley connection claims his bird feeder bucks are all full racked yet as of last weekend, but it's in that time frame where it's more likely as each day goes by to find a few. Please report, I've got a month to go finally. Can't wait, but praying for a better spring than last years, good luck.

Great finds guys! I haven't been able to get out lately, but I have had a chance to drive by a few areas; didn't see one buck. I'm planning on getting out this weekend. Good luck to all.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
