How's it looking so far? Do you think numbers are down for you this year compared to recent years? I have seen fewer deer this year than the past two years. Also not seeing as much buck sign as years past.

Posted

I see deer atleast 2 or 3 times a week on my drive between Fergus and Perham on County 1 and Hwy 78. Haven't seen any bucks, but lots of nice sized does.

The deer are there, and numbers seem to be about like last year in my area. Traditional rub lines are spotty on sign, I agree.

I have found much more sign along standing corn. With all the rain, they have food and shelter in one spot, so that is cutting down the traditional movements quite a bit.

Good observation Gissert. I would really like to see the corn harvested this week in our area. Hopefully the weather cooperates.

Unfortunately there will not be much corn coming off in the next couple weeks for our area. Wet ground, wet corn, wet forecast....and most guys still trying to get the beans first when/where they can. Will be a tough deer hunt because of all the standing corn. Hopefully the deer will start moving more in the next few days.

Be careful out there.

Good luck everyone!

Makes me happy the farmer who plants the land we hunt went with all wheat this year... grin Chucky you have any trail cam photos so I know what to look for this year?

It was getting pretty close to drying out enough to get after beans and corn again this morning....now its raining pretty good.

Need a hot doe and your in business. Corn is the problem in many Ottertail county areas. My OT. county land has very few rubs and scrapes this year and all my OT relatives are saying the same thing, but that can change in a hurry too. The deer are there, not like 5 years ago but similar to last year it seems. My plan is to sit all day Saturday, it only takes a moment to see and get one, but it can feel like forever at times, I'm hoping for a mid-day 14 pointer like last year, but the weather last year was way different than it will be for this years opening weekend.

musky buck, I seem to recall that you hunt a couple miles south of mills, same area I do. Just curious how close will be.

We hunt over by Ethel Lake. The deer numbers are down this year from what I can tell and what the DNR tells us all. Even the main trails on our land haven't had as much travel as usaul. But we are seeing a few scrapes and rubs on the property.

I am just hoping for no wind and some cooler weather.

And looking forward to a Shoreline Breakfast on Saturday!

mnmarlin, swamp road on the rush lake tar about 2 miles south and a hair west of mills. I also have land south of Wadena and a chunk sw of wadena. The Mills land is very wet this year thanks to October. A few isolated huge tree rubs in there though. Good luck hunting and 2 moons to go ! smile

We are in NW Ottertail Co. and we have been happy with this hunt. We have filled out four of the five tags, all with bucks (two button and a six and nine pointer). My brother is being really choosy since he would like to muzzle load too.

Well, a recent bout of fish fever has swept through our area causing work on Friday to be cancelled.     My wife said her fever is so bad she had to ice it ASAP.     Real time report on the snow and ice conditions expected tomorrow night.

Without some melting, I hope it blows off.  Could get real slick if it just stays dry powder on the ice.

It was a gift but you can Jams by Jan here: https://www.boundarywaterscatalog.com/jams-by-jan/gunflint-trail-jams-12557   We were definitely wearing cleats.  They’re permanent fixtures on our boots right now.     There were a few patches of snow and the wind block of the house and truck would make a drift out of the blowing snow so I had something for a little banking.  Yes, absolutely very slippery.  Even with cleats you have to be careful.  A couple times it was difficult to open the truck door.  No traction to keep my feet planted.   Driving: go slow so you can steer and stop.  I had to use The Gripper cleats on my tires to move the house once.  Otherwise I had a patch of snow to git er moving.   Smurfy, I’ll say I was wearing Yak Trax which are just spiral wrapped wire for gripping.  No good edge for better bite.  I broke my Ice Trekkers that had carbide studs that had a good bite and balanced profile.  We also have the clunky HT cleats that have the steel teeth across the ball of your foot, more or less.   Those might even grip better on bare ice than the Yak Trax?  But are not comfortable to me and get dull.

wanderer......when you were on winnie you said no snow on the ice correct??? looks like towards the end of next week the weather looks respectable, but with no snow on the ice traction could be dangerous......especially mid week with noone around. liek to get up there but.........   i have cleats but dont think thats an option, especially alone.

Oh man, sorry.  It all happed so fast I didn’t even think of it till it was too late…   I’m contemplating my selfishness over a bowl of Quaker Oats Maple and Brown sugar (made with milk), fresh ground Caribou coffee with half and half, and Second Harvest wheat toast with Gunflint Trail WILD Blueberry jam.     I will try to not talk about food again without photo backup. 😉

Lake conditions remain very good.  Had 18 inches of ice by my house, so added 4 inches of ice in the 5 days since I was last out.  The ice was more than 90% bare.  Pickups were driving all over.  I even drove my small car out to the house.  With the lack of snow cover, I assume that the rest of the lake is in very good travel conditions.   Fishing was very good but they were quite small.  The biggest I caught was only 16 inches.  The rest of the walleyes were 10-13 inches.  Best bite was from 830-1000.  I finally managed to catch an eye after dark (the 16 incher at 5pm) and fished late enough to catch an 18-inch eelpout (yuck).  That was the signal to call it a day.   Good luck fishing, be careful on the ice and courteous to others.  And please pick up your trash.
