MN Deer Hunting Licenses

With all the different combinations of licenses to use this is a confusing matter. I am wondering if you can tag 3 deer during rifle season between lottery and management areas? Which tag should be used in etheir area?

no you cant! lottery areas allow the harvest of one deer. buck or doe. doe only if successful in the anterless lottery. if you harvest a deer in a lottery zone, that license no longer has a tag. the only additional tags you can buy are bonus tags, which would be one for a managed zone, and 4 for an intensive zone. if you use the tag that comes with your license, be it archery, rifle, or muzzy, you can no longer shoot a deer in a lottery area, unless party hunting. if you hunt lottery zones, you can only shoot one deer. if you hunt managed zones, you can only shoot 2 deer. if you hunt both zones, you can only shoot 2 deer. if you hunt intensive harvest zones, you can shoot 5 deer.

once you shoot a deer and tag it with the tag that comes with your license in a lottery area, you no longer have, nor can you get a valid tag for a lottery zone. make sense?

i may be wrong, but i believe this is correct. i am going to research it a bit more, and make corrections if i need to!

Good thread and haven't done this since the multi-zone buck days. ? is can I hunt rifle in zone 2 and zone 1 for a buck only correct ? The other question is if I get a buck can I still buy a muzzleloader license which then would have to be antlerless. My buddies asked me this one last night, on their side of the highway none of them got a doe permit, across the highway it's a 3 deer area and they were wondering if they could hunt their to take a doe. I told them I believe if they were to look at their tags it would say for a buck or a doe where they are at. I'm confused just reading what I wrote.

My understanding to the way you asked that question is no. You can tag three deer between those areas, but not all with the same weapon.

Only one bonus tag may be used in a managed area & none in a lottery area, that's one deer. Once you use your main firearm tag that's two deer, but you have no other tag to use, unless you have a muzzle loader or archery tag. Those you could use in the area you haven't already shot the max # of animals in, ie: 1 in a lottery, 2 in a managed area, but of course only the bow license would be valid during firearm season.

i looked into it a bit, and now i'm a bit confused! if you can purchase 2 bonus tags in a managed zone, then yes you can shoot 3. but i think you are only allowed one bonus tag in a managed zone, plus your original tag. once that original tag is filled, you no longer have a tag for a lotto area.

I guess the question is, can you have 2 bonus tags in a managed zone? I dont think so, because you can only have two tags total for managed zones. your original tag plus one bonus equals 2!

You can only use one managed tag, but if you have more than one main license, ie: bow, ML, firearm, as long as you shoot them in the right areas & seasons, you can shoot two total in managed & one total in lottery.

lcornice clarified this a while back, it's hard to figure out though. I believe he said he thought less than 10 people do it in the state every year. My goal this year is to be one of them, but if I don't get a shot at a good buck I most likely won't be. The bonus tag in the managed area's already filled.

haverhunting. i'm about 98% sure you can only shoot two total with a rifle. buy a bonus tag for the managed zone. if you shoot a doe in a managed zone, put your bonus tag on it. then you have your original tag left, for either managed or lotto, but regardless, it is buck only, unless you were successful in the anterless lotto.

They way I read it is you can take a combination of 3 deer in a lotto and managed area. So for example I could shoot a buck in the lotto and then shoot two does in a managed area. Or I could shoot a doe with a permit in a lotto area and two more does in the managed area but not too many people would want to burn their buck tag to shoot a doe in a lotto area. I may be wrong about this.

Thank You All

My father needed to read this to understand it. I had talked to a lady from the DNR yesterday to get the answer but I couldn't get it through my dads head. He needed to read it several times to understand it.

P.S. Your are only allowed to register one bonus tag in in management areas. My phone call confermed this.

Page 64 of the regs book, I just copied the Bonus Permit section:

Bonus permits

• Bonus permits are available to archery, firearms, and muzzleloader

hunters to take antlerless deer in designated areas.

One bonus permit may be used per year in a managed deer area.

Up to four bonus permits may be used in intensive deer areas and

some special hunts.

• Bonus permits are valid for archery, muzzleloader or firearms, but

hunters must have the appropriate regular license for the area,

season, and method they are using.

• Bonus permits are not valid in lottery deer areas or youth only

antlerless areas.

I understand that we can shoot two deer in a managed & one in a lottery, but it would have to be with at least two weapons, as there's only one regular license with any one weapon & you can only use one total bonus between the two types of areas per this reg.

Just to make sure, I'm allowed during rifle season to register one buck in a lottery area and purchase two bonus permits for a management area to be able to register two antlerless? Or do the bonus permits have to be for two different management areas???

One bonus permit may be used per year in a managed deer area.

This came from the regulation book. This leaves the question on buying management tags in two different areas. It just states that you can use one bonus tag in A managed area not managed areas like it states for intensive harvest areas!!!!???

it seems odd only .17 percent, thats right, less than 1 percent of the hunters opted for 2 bonus permits. in managed areas. sounds like an unclear regulation handbook to me!

Anyone else want to vote Lou the Most Valuable Member of this forum?? Seriously Lou, thanks for taking the time to check in here and answer questions, we all appreciate it greatly. I know most (if not all) of my questions have been cleared up just by reading this forum. I can't even imagine trying to write the regulations so that everyone understands them, and overall I think you did a great job. Thanks again!

Thanks again Lou. You got my vote!!! No reason to beat anyone up just yet as long as you get this through to your enforcement officers. Keep up the good job checking on us nitpickys and we will do our best to keep questioning the rules..

This is exactly why I accepted the offer to post on this board 6 years ago. I've found it extremely worthwhile and full of good information. Trust me, I've turned down similar offers on other sites. I like the fact that people ask good questions and I'm happy to admit my mistakes and work to fix it next year. I already sent word to other folks and we'll huddle up soon to get it squared away.

I'm just glad I no longer have to explain the all-season license!

Ya, if we got rid of the Archery, Firearms, and Muzzleloader license and just had an All-season license it would be less confusing.

I like the option on not having to buy tags I might not need. I could very easily be done by ML and I won't need to buy a license. It will save me money. I might have been different if we were still in an intensive zone, but in managed. Its not as needed.

So just to clarify. A person can only use two bonus tags in managed areas total? So I could shoot a buck in lottery with my firearm, then go to a managed area like 342 and shoot a doe and tag it with my management tag. But, I have not reached my 5 deer limit or my limit for the the managed area. Can I buy another management tag and shoot another doe in 342 with the firearm, or can I move to another area like 343 and shoot another doe with the firearm? Or am I done with the firearm season after I shoot two deer with the firearm? I guess I am still a little confused.

You beat me to posting I WAS WRONG Holy cow, was I wrong. I thought the rule was re-written (by me) to allow 2 BP in managed areas. It wasn't, so you can't do it. I swear I'll fix it next and I apologize up and down for posting incorrect information (Moderator - shoud I delete the other posts?). Again, I'm really, really sorry but it's one of those things that I swore I had done, went back and checked, and go figure I hadn't. Yikes!

You can still mix and match licenses + the bonus permit to kill 2 deer. Examples:

1 Firearm + 1 BP

1 Arch + 1 Firearm

1 Firearm + 1 Muzz

1 Muzz + 1 BP, etc ...

Okay, let the harassment begin!

On the south end...   This week was a great week of walleye fishing on Lake of the Woods.  In addition, saugers, jumbo perch, some monster pike and an occasional crappie in the mix!     There are three fishing techniques being used to score Lake of the Woods gold (walleyes).  First, drifting or slow trolling crawler harnesses.  In a nutshell, using about a 2 ounce weight and a 3-4 foot harness with a spinner, two hooks and a crawler.     A tip for crawler harnesses, hook the dark part or head of the crawler on the front hook.  Try to keep the crawler straight between the two hooks.  Try to leave a few inches of crawler off of your last hook and pinch off the rest.  The walleyes and saugers will still hit it, but you will create more hookups.   The second presentation is a jig and minnow or frozen emerald shiner.  Basically locate fish out on the mud or on structure, anchor up and jig.  If you are amongst fish, they will find you.     The third way walleyes are being caught, and some may be surprised about, is trolling crankbaits.  Some have put on the trolling gear when the walleyes weren't as cooperative or when the fish are spread out.  Lots of success catching good numbers of walleyes and good sized fish.     Lots of fish out over deep mud or deep structure.  The deep mud is holding a lot of walleyes in 21' - 27'.  Electronics will help you mark fish.     There is another shallow water bite still taking place anywhere from 5 - 17'.  Much of the shallow bite has to do with feeding opportunities on various minnow spawns, crawfish and hatches.  Not every walleye is targeting the same prey.  Lots of opportunities.  .   Gold, orange, chartreuse, glow and pink, or a combo of these colors, are a great place to start.   Anglers can keep a combined limit of 6 walleyes and saugers.  Up to 4 can be walleyes.  All walleyes 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28 inches may be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one day's possession.  If you catch a limit, eat some fish and freeze a couple, make sure to count your remaining fish left over for your possession.   On the Rainy River...  With some rain in the area, the river was flowing with a strong current and some debris this past week.  Debris has slowed considerably and water clarity is starting to improve.     Water clarity is important for walleyes, saugers, pike and smallmouth bass.  Sturgeon are much more dialed into scent to find their next meal, consequently, when the sturgeon season opens again on July 1st for the keep season, things should be good.   The fishing happening on the river is focused in areas just out of the current.  Most fish will hang just off, able to grab a passing meal but not having to expend too much energy.  Current can be good as it focuses fish in areas.   Jigging with a minnow is effective when you are on fish.  Otherwise, pulling spinners and trolling crankbaits along shoreline breaks against the current in 6 - 12' of water is producing a mixed bag of walleyes, saugers, pike, smallmouth bass and an occasional crappie.  Up at the NW Angle...  Fishing for a variety of species has been excellent and is in full summer swing up at the Angle.   For those fishing out of the NW Angle, both the Minnesota and Ontario waters of Lake of the Woods are producing a number of nice walleyes.  Many fish have slid off onto deeper structure.  With that said, there are so many areas of forage on LOW, walleyes will be in numerous spots, some shallow and some deeper, taking advantage of opportunities.  Lots of fish to be had, just go fishing.   Jigging structure has been effective.  When fish are a bit spread out, pulling spinners with crawlers or trolling crankbaits is catching a lot of fish.     In this part of the lake, expect to catch walleyes, saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, pike and smallmouth bass.   Muskie anglers are after it and reporting good numbers, and in true LOW style, some big fish over the 50 inch mark.  Summer patterns are starting to take hold, but fish are holding in a variety of areas still.

We got .5” last night. Hasn’t affected the lake level yet. It’s been steady the past three days here (Frazer Bay). RLG

Water Levels I believe are now at a record high with all the rain last week, and more fell last night.  I hope it stops raining soon for all the people who have businesses and live in the area.  Water can do so much damage.

MarkB, Where did you find the perch?  I would love to get into some of those.  MarkB are you fishing more on the east or west end?
    • MikeG3Boat
Where are the water temps now with all the rain?  Coming up for a week on Friday and want to see what I can find out.  I have had a very poor fishing so far this year.  New to the area and just can't figure it out.  Home is on the west end of big bay.

I'm gonna try this picture thing again. Please bear with me.      Our buddy Greg with his best of the trip.     Above: Pike River bridge the morning we left.        Below: My cousin Tim caught these the morning after the storm.

Mark, Glad your crew had another great outing. It’s always good to read your reports. Just wish there were more of them like the old days. Sorry you hit the storm. One of the worst in our 14 years. We’ll be dealing with dock issues for a long time but nothing like the good folks in Cook have.  The fishing has come around a little since the storm. Definitely nightcrawler now. I don’t get far out of Frazer but the reefs are where the action is. Looking forward to hearing from you in September.  My best to you and Linda, RLG p.s. Our good old red lab, Ole, cashed it in last summer, but we have a 6 month old lab now who is learning the ropes up here (and teaching us we’re older than we think we are!)
