Walleye fishing has picked up a little bit this past weekend for me. Saturday morning we picked up 4 walleye 15.5-19.25" Nothing fast. All before the sun got to high. Rigs and crawlers. 30-40' But after they stop bitting we still continued to mark lots of fish.. Put the camera down and it was unbelievable. Walleye all over. I tried everything but no takers. Saturday night went back out and 3 more. Marked allot of fish again but none would bite.. Well Sunday was very tough. The wind was roaring.. Only managed 1. Water temp still at the 68° mark. It will only get better.

Hey Marbleye,

Thanks for the update. I'll be on Ida this weekend at a friends cabin. Have not fished out there since last year. Are you getting them off the humps, or have they moved to the shore structure now?

Posted

We fished the mid lake humps. No weed line where we found them.

I'm going to try to get there this weekend again.. Good Luck!

Marbleye,is the bass fishing any good on Ida?

Posted

Yes the bass fishing has been really good. They seemed to everywhere this summer...

Posted

Nice fish marbleye. I can't help but to ask myself why I don't seem to get the boat out there more in Oct. This fall isn't lining up to allow much fishing either. Oh well. I guess the dogs have had to watch me fish all summer so now it's their turn to get in on some action (even though I'm not ruling out a quickie trip!!).

Thanks for the info Marbleye. I'm going with some friends to fish Muskie on Meltona Thursday and Friday morning, then I'm on Ida for the rest of Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning. My friend, who has a place on Ida only fishes bass and muskie, so he is no help on where to go. :-) Guess I'll be starting on the humps and moving around from there. Blue Lund with a 50 Evenrude, if you see me out there stop and say hello.

marble eye question for you. When you put the camera down and see walleyes do you see smallmouth bass with them. Curious because a lake i fish ill catch a few eyes then they shut off and the bass start. Dont have a camera of my own any more.

Slurpie, I can't say i've seen smallies with the walleye's on this lake. I've seen plenty of large mouth though. I talked with my dad today and he sad that he caught 8 walleye's yesterday morning. All on Redtails. Still out on the mid lake humps. 32-42' of water. The temp drop 4 degrees in one day.

Hey Wave Wacker.. The last spot I saw you on a few weeks back still has plenty of fish on it. That was one of the spots that we saw numerous walleye's but no takers at all last weekend..

Posted

Yeah, it sure was hard last weeekend having my duck boat hooked up instead of the fishing boat with the lack of duck activity. I think I'm going to have to retire the duck hunting thing and just fish on the duck opener.

Marbleye...your dad find his fish on a different spot? Not that it matters as unfortunately I think the boat is done for the year. I may get a wild hair to run up this weekend but really should get some things done around home. We'll see.

I'm heading up this weekend, lows in the 30's and possibly a little wintery mix.

WW - do you chase ducks around the Alex area or are you down towards the cities?

Posted

Well I guess I don't really duck hunt. Between other outdoor "hobbies" being much more enjoyable for me and farming activities I have to prioritize my habits and duck hunting takes a back seat. When I do "dabble" in it, it's kind of both up at Alex. and on the farm at home.

Up at Alex. I was exactly 2 miles W of Co Rd 6 (the tar that runs N/S on the W side of Lake Ida). It was very sad. Very, very little ducks seen. Now admittingly so, the father in-law and a couple of the family friends bought about 60 acres years ago (when waterfowl hunting was out of this world out there I guess) of which 3/4 is broken down into 3 open water wetland areas in which I just hunt my typical spot out there. In other words, no scouting to see if there were birds anywhere else. But a person will typically at least see some "buzzing" around. Not this time out.

Posted

WW. He found the fish north of that spot. Very far north. Kinda a new spot for us. 35yrs on the lake and still finding new areas to fish.. Hopefully heading there this weekend.

Marbleye.

It was slow for me last weekend. Only got a couple. I don't know the lake, so I basically tried every hump I could find. Friday was really choppy, so had trouble staying on spots where I was marking fish, but managed to get a couple.

Saturday I marked quite a few fish, but could not get them to take a look. Slow and cold day on the water.

Posted

Anyone else trying it this weekend? Looks like a little snow is in the forecast. I'll be out there giving it a whirl.

Posted

Unfortunately I've broken down and fully committed to getting things done around home (maybe a little rooster chasing and/or bow hunting with the cold weather). What I think that essentially means is that I have to say goodbye to Ida for this soft water season.

I was just at Lake Ida tonight and thought I would update those who would like to know. Ida is almost completely open still. I don't know if it has frozen over and blown open a couple of times - I was very surprised to see it open when I was there. I figured when one of the posters on here said there was 2" of ice on Miltona on Sunday that Ida would be locked up with a decent amount of ice, but that was not the case.

Posted

Thanks for the report.

Did you happen to check the ice on Miltona when out that way?

Did they get much snow up there/

Posted

No I didn't check Miltona, sorry. There was an inch or two of snow I would guess.

Posted

What part of the lake was this? How about the north bay, is that any different?

Posted

Ida is always one of the last lakes to freeze.

Posted

Froze over thurs. and got reports of 4 wheelers on the ice already!!

Posted

There is 8 inches of ice on Little Ida right out from the resort. There are about 15 fish houses out in the bay already.

Posted

Hmmm, might be able to drown a couple of minnows over New Christmas/New Years week after all.

Posted

I have a friend fishing Ida today. He said there was 8 inches out a couple hundred yards, and then about 6 inches where he is fishing about 400-500 yards out. Some heaving by shore, but once he got out about 100 yards, it was clear smooth ice.

I'm hoping to get out there soon! Good luck everyone.

Posted

Anyone been out to Ida today after the snow? Curious how much snow and ice is on the lake now and whether slush has started.

Posted

Just talked to a friend who was on Ida today. He said there was 4 inches of water on top of the ice, and he was bailing out the sled on his portable house. Yuck! Hoping for a hard freeze, I'm headed that way on Tuesday morning.

Posted

Fishin-Ida, just wondering how the ice is doing out from your place after all this snow? Was thinking about coming out from the resort if you don't have to much water on your roads. How much ice do you have out there now?

Posted

I was out yesterday on Ida and the slush is starting up around the edges of the lake and about 400 yrds out were we set up the water came up about 2" on top of the ice from drilling holes, didn't measure the ice but appeared to be about 10". I would guess the snow on average is at least a foot deep on the lake, without a road you will need a sled.

Posted

If anyone knows someone on Ida who plows driveways, I need mine done by Wed Jan 30th, 12 noon. Email me with names, numbers and prices. 40 X 40. Thanks

Mark

I don't need no livescope to catch fish....🤔🤪  It's all in how ya wiggle the worm!😜 Just sayin  🤣

Obviously this is more of a hot topic due to forward facing sonar. With that being said, I know people who have pulled crappies out of basins 40+ deep since the fl-8 and zercom flashers came out. That's over 30 years ago. I do think there's a push to ban these in MN and I could see them doing it here. They'll have to pay my livescope from my cold dead hands 😆 on days I can't catch a walleye jigging or rigging it's nice to turn it on and throw corks at individual fish

It wasn't just you, I was fishing west of you about an hour on Monday. Fished 8am-4pm, no fish, two keeper walleye and one small one from 4pm-630pm. Marked a lot of fish, they would come up to a jig and swim away. They were skittish to the dead stick too

I wonder like divers, if we let them decompress every 10' for 1/2hr. If that would help?  🤔  It would slow the bite down a bit!  🤭

That was a better study compared to last winter when they setup the vertical tube nets and tried to release exhausted fish from being studied and expected them to be able to swim straight down a 3' hoop net.     That lake's crappie population from this latest video was pretty deep at 40-50', and no doubt from those depths that is barotrauma for most.  That is deeper than most crappie holes but certainly how some are. However from helping give fish a good release from the 35' and less range and tracking them with live sonar most of them swim at a shallow angle back to the depths and I watch them rejoin the school and be active.  Uncut Angling's video helped counter some of the initial narrow findings.

If you fished with me more often, you'd never have to make this statement...   38" of ice - love it. I'm really going to have to dig around for my auger extension. I don't think that I've needed it in over a decade.   Too bad nobody has a locomotive chugging across the ice to do some logging, like the good old days.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay.  Resorts and outfitters on some parts of the lake have ice roads extending over 16 miles staying on nice schools of walleyes and saugers.  Many fish houses are over deep mud.  Some are on structure.  It is always fishing of course, but overall, February has been very productive for most anglers.   Extensions are being used on ice augers as the ice continues to thicken.  The thick ice this year will be good for the extended ice fishing season Lake of the Woods enjoys with fish houses out through March 31st, walleyes and saugers open through April 14th and a pike season that never closes. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water.  Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with a good number of jumbo perch in the mix this year.  Some big eelpout are also showing up.  Anglers are reporting plenty of fish for fresh fish frys and usually extra fish to bring home.   The one-two punch of a jigging line and deadstick is the way to go.  On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent.  Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well.     Lures with a light have been working well in the stained water.  Please remember, in MN, lures with a light or water activated light can be used as long as the battery is mercury free and the hook is attached directly to the lure and not as a dropper line.     On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.    Some days, mornings are better, other days, it's the afternoons.  There is no distinct pattern, they could come through at any time. On the Rainy River...  The start of the day and end of the day have been best for those targeting walleyes on the river. A jig and minnow or a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Some big sturgeon being iced by ice anglers targeting them.  It is a catch-and-release sturgeon season currently.   Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing has been strong in the islands area of Lake of the Woods. Resorts continue to move their fish houses around, staying on the best schools of walleyes.     Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, and jumbo perch with an occasional pike or tullibee as well.     Big crappies are still being caught just over the border.  Fish houses are available, check with a NW Angle resort for info on crappie fishing.   Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Maybe you should put rattle wheels down, if your going to sleep for 6hrs! 🤭 😆

Monday was my worst day of winter fishing on Vermilion in the last 4 years.  Caught only one 14" walleye in nearly 8 hours of fishing.  Missed two other bites and was marking very few fish.  Maybe the fish were taking Monday off after a big weekend.   No more water came up on the ice under my house.  Think it was because I haven't banked snow around it for a couple of weeks so the bare ice around the house is getting very thick.  I measured 38" of ice under my house and the Ion barely made it through even with the extension installed.  Needless to say I banked around the house this time.  Another lesson I learned today is don't drill holes if ice is frozen on your blades.  I did that on one hole and it didn't center properly and drilled at an angle on the edge of the opening.  Hope I can correct the location and angle on my next trip up.   Not much change in the surface lake surface conditions.  The drifts may be a little higher and are definitely harder.  There are still a few bare ice spots on the lake.  Very little activity on the lake today.  There are about 3 dozen houses from McKinley Park out to Birch Island.  Another person pulled there house off today, and I am sure many more will pull theirs off this coming weekend.  Only 13 days left of walleye season.
