Hello everyone, I'm heading up to selkirk from oct 30th to nov 5th, I was just wondering if this is going to be too late for the greenback run or if the fishing is any good at all this time of year at red river or p.f. We went this time last year and didn't have very good luck, but we wrote it off as a tough year due to flooding, any info would be greatly appreciated and i will definitley report while i'm there, thanks!!!

Nice work and thanks for your reports. I hope to get up there for some hardwater fishing this winter. It's been a while. Would love to go now, but can't seem to get away.

Give us a heads up before you come up for ice... nothing like banging multiple high 20's & 30's in 4-5 FOW under 3 feet of ice on the lake... 100 fish days are kinda' cool, too grin . By the time they hit the cone of the Vex, they're on. I might even be able to show you where one or two of them usually hang out, if our schedules match up whistle. Make sure you go see Eddy for the magic baits first, though wink.

Topcat, we'll be up with a group of 8 Dec 17-20. It would be fun to get together one day out on the lake if you'd like to join us. We've only fished the river, but will be bringing sleds with hopes of hitting the lake a day or two. Shoot me an email if interested.

Quick story....

I was up on the lake with friends from Fargo, from work.

One was relatively new to using a Vexilar, and on the second spot..I drilled the holes for him...moved and started to drill mine.

Well he shouted over to me...@%@%..Vexilar...can't see anything but RED lines on the %%% thing Eddy..@%%-it!

Eddy...come fix this /$$$%^..thing!

So... I pop over..check his settings...Hummmmm..everything looks good...Ah...ummm....how about you drop that Chubby down once.....those BIG Red Marks..them are all fish....stacked top to bottom.

Nooooo... shocked ..Your kid'n me...really?

Bloop...Chubby clears the ice ..didn't make it 2' under the ice...and THUD!

Piggy on!

His Chubby never hit the bottom for 20 minutes, one fish after another...I was having so much fun watching him...I didn't make it back to my holes for 10 min.

Yup...it can get real interesting at times. smile

Nice fish, a little first timers luck for you as well. First time I made it up there 6 years ago I stuck the same exact fish, 31" and 13 lb 5 oz. Did you release it or will you be mounting it. If you kept it, look up Dave Delipper in Winnipeg, the best taxidermy work I have ever seen and he can match the colors of the greenback to a T.

Right at the North end of the Miracle Mile... pulling cranks along the 12' line has always been good to me there grin. Nice fish cool.

Last week or two of the season, hands down (only if you like hundred fish days, though smile ). Lotsa' big girls stacked up at the mouth... that's not to say the early ice days aren't ridiculous, too (that's on the river, mind ya'... I prefer LW fishing grin) . Early river ice is multiple hogs, not many little (<25" fish).

I just enjoy the big lake in a t-shirt, is all (AND 100+ fish after our long winter wink ). Depends what you want, I guess cool.

As long as there's ice, it'll be good wink. You'll be on the river in most of the same spots you were just at... charge the Vex and stock up on some noisy baits grin . Guys are slamming them right now (I'm watching the Vikings game whistle ).

Don't need a sled... truck or boots on the river & you're on 'em grin . Lockport is a sauger factory... head North Anywhere from the Miracle Mile to the End of Main at that time & it's money wink .

topcat....so how would that work for first ice? drive north on the road from stu's then walk out from a parking lot?

Early December within walking distance of Stu's can be tricky, the strong current can create some ice challenges, use caution. You are better off fishing closer to the Power Plant, if the fish are biting you will know, there will be plenty of traffic by the CIL road from the east. You can also access the river many places from the Selkirk Park all the way to End of Main by foot. The farther north you go the less current you have to deal with. Last year early ice was good, bring your electronics, many of the big fish were suspended over deep water. Simple jig and salted minnow works well. Jigging spoons and chubby darters are a blast if the fish are active. If you can get on the ice by Stu's bring lot's of bait, the sauger numbers are unreal. The lake is great also but it's best fished with a snowmobile. I can't wait, we have two trips planned for this winter already.

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.
