Zebra Mussels Confirmed in Pelican Lake

Recommended Posts

It's very easy to play "Monday Morning Quarterback"...and state what should have been done. I personally believe that we should not be pointing fingers at the MNDNR for a lack of effort.

The spread of exotic species is a big deal...I would say as high as 90% of "boaters"... not just anglers are not taking the proper steps to prevent the spread of exotics. Everyone has the "not me" attitude...surely someone else is negligent...but not me. How many on this site actually dry their boats for 5 days before hitting another body of water other than the last one they were on? How many bleech thier livewells when they get home and dry them?

It is an extremely difficult task at hand to educate the masses and expect compliance. Please talk to a fellow boater and let them know what you know about spreading exotics. As some comments stated in previous posts...the time is now and we all need to do our part in educating each other.

Does the avg joe shmoe take any precautions when he buys a boatlift or dock system at a smoking price on lake X and moves it and installs it on lake Z?? I doubt it.

my $.02.

What I need is a government bailout to buy a better boat that doesn't take on water and require a gas powered bilge pump.

I only fish every couple of weeks but can see a major problem with frequent or local boats that maintain moisture in the part of the hull we can't inspect. The winter freeze will probably do the annual purge of the bad guys but that doesn't help the mid-season problems.

It is tuff, to say and complain and expect the government to do more. everyone wants more funding for eveything. The government cant do everything for us. At some point we have to be proactive and take care of ourselves. If the gov would have bailed us out big time, and gave us billions of $$$ and completely solved the problem. We all know something else would have come up, and we would have blown it again. I dont know who does the lobbying for our lakes and resources, but i hope they tried to get some help for atleast education or research.

Its hard though. I saw in the MN bailout money there was like $8mil dedicated to build a bike path that would go to the new twins stadium. I would much rather have had that money go to lakes, but we both know more people would use that path in a day.

I guess one last thought is, I have a family cabin on Pelican, JS has a place. You all have seen the ridiculous money that is out there. Maybe instead of paying a $35 lake association fee, we should jack that up and pay our own way. Why wait for the DNR to work the landing. It is our lake to protect and everyones to enjoy, maybe we should employ the help ourselves. Go door to door and get the money to do so.

Is it too late, who knows.I hate to be the example. Other lakes in the area, maybe you need to do something your selves now, to prevent the spread.

Hope i dont sound too angry, but we need to take care of ourselves at some point. YOu know there is always another invassive coming.

scsarve,

The DNR might be willing to work out a schedule with the lake association for future seasons. Might be worth looking into. Could save them a lot of $$$$.

I guess I don't look at enforcing laws as govt. bailout.

The DNR doesn't have the man-power to enforce the laws that they are in charge of.

That's the choice our state govt. makes. It's [PoorWordUsage].

Our lakes, rivers and forests are living legacies for future MN residents, our kids.

It's the job of our MN govt. to protect them, but they fail time and again.

the bailout would be the money to enforce. We arent gonna get it. We need to try something ourselves. There are so many more people that just dont care. Its horrible but true.

Side note. I fished lake harriet in MPLS today. There was no DNR at the ramp. There was a sign that said millfoil as you back down the ramp. There was no signage that i saw leaving the ramp.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
