Leaving tomorrow morning after fishing all week on Osakis. Been coming here every year for about 20 years during this same week - my wife's family is from Osakis. My brother-in-law and I like trolling for northerns, but that was rather slow compared to most years. However, the crappie and sunny fishing was great! People have literally been hauling in nice fat crappies by the bucket-load all week. We were catching both sunnies and crappies at Four Mile Bar all morning the last two days using crawlers, on the 7.5-8 feet break at about 5' deep in the submergent weeds. People are catching crappies on just about every type of submerged bar and hump in the lake though, using crawlers. Haven't seen too many people bringing in walleyes though, although it sounds like that fishing has been decent too. Great lake . . . week went by too fast!

Spent the week on the lake. It was the first time I have been on the lake. What a great lake. We will definitely be back next year. As far as fishing, I fished Monday to Thursday. Caught 35 walleyes. all of them were caught during low light times. I caught them on leeches in 11 FOW to 15 FOW. Most of the walleyes were small. Between 13" to 14.5". I did manage to catch 4 keepers between 16" and 19". Also caught two bigger walleyes that we let go. A 22" and 23". I took the teenage girls out for some crappies and found a nice school of them. We caught 25 of them on a shallow hump in 9 FOW in the middle of the afternoon about 1PM. Each being between 10" and 12". All and all we had a great time fishing and hanging out at the resort. We had a nice little fish fry and we got to bring some fish home. We will be back next year. Good luck to everyone the rest of the year on the lake. Below are some pictures of our catches.

I am wondering how the bass fishing has been lately? Never been on the lake but I'm hoping to give it a try this weekend thanks.

What are some patterns a person should try up there. Never been there I am debating between there and minnawaska. Deep weed lines or humps. Jigs or cranks. Thanks

I'm hoping to come up there for a couple of days at the end of the month. I am assuming there still is a decent bite still going? It should just get better every day I would think.

I would assume your talking about the panfish bite? From what I saw last weekend the boat numbers were way down but still plenty of people jigging for dink walleyes in 40 feet of water . The bite will only improve from here on out

Anybody been out fishing recently? Wondering how the bite has been and if it is picking up. I will be up duck hunting in the area this weekend and looking for a lake to catch a few fish on. Are there fish out on the humps in the lake or are they more toward shore this time of year. Crappies , sunnies, walleye doesnt matter just looking for a few fish in a 4 hour time window after the ducks stop flying on Saturday. Thanks in advance for any hints as far as crawlers or minnows or depth.

Still pretty warm and fish are still kind of scattered; find what's left of anything green as far as weeds and you will find an active grab bag. Saw crappies schooling in the basins and suppose there were gills mixed in as well...as well as roaming the deep flats. Pig eye shallow bite was not there yet....so yep would work the humps. Bait....the fish seem very well fed and would bring an assortment in case one flavor is prefered. Could just troll "raps"...but be prepared for the pike to go midevil on them.

Pretty much what pushbutton said. Baits you'll have to figure out that day because they have been changing what they want from day to day and sometimes from morning to evening. Last time out they wanted minnows in the morning and leeches in the evening.

Retired,

What's the water temp at? Last weekend when I was at the cabin it was still hovering around 60. Has it broke lower than that yet? I wont make it up this weekend, hopefully it breaks into the mid 50's soon, but with this forecast who knows

Sorry jake125, must have missed this earlier. Today it was around 58 give or take one or two. Would get up to 60 in some of the shallower bays.

Headed up to Osakis next Thursday for the weekend. Wondering how the bite has been and maybe a few pointers on where to fish! Thanks

We fished a couple of spots one was 17-20fow and the other was 30fow and both spots produced. Look for the suspended marks I went pretty plain using a regular plain hook and a sinker with a fathead

My nephew and I are heading up to Osakis for a quick fishing trip this Saturday and Sunday...hoping to pull in some crappie and walleye. Had good luck last October trolling raps in shallow waters, but had more pike than walleye jumping onto our lines. Caught a good number of walleye and crappie jigging with minnows in 15-20 fow. We had a good time, so hoping for the same this weekend. Mid-50's, 10-15 mph winds, chance of rain Sunday...can't be too picky.

Made it out for a couple hours we had no problem limiting lots of eaters we were fishing deep and the fish were dying so we kept our limit and left. Biggest was 13" and only 2 gills. Was pretty windy also so we just anchored.

It was a weird week. The crappies bolted from the shallows big time and floated big time being taken out of "deepish" water. Similarly, tough go on the gills. The lake must be thermoclined heavily right now. Don't see a whole lot with the weather forecast to change that much. If fishing, no need for a Bassmaster retrieve. Get a good set and take your time.........it's just a 10 inch crappie, not a state record, and plenty more where that came from.

Made last minute bad decision to head to Osakis, after I've been having good luck on Minnewaska last week....should have stuck with success, Big O was a dead sea yesterday....tried everything from depths, presentation, and speed.

Is there any resorts that plow roads out? I am assuming this lake is pretty good in the winter for walleyes and crappies. I have fished it in the summer but never in the winter.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
