The wife and I are heading to Cass this Saturday for a week eye chasing and afternoon naps. This will be our second trip the area, as we spent a week up there two summer's ago.

I can't remember the name of the neat Mexican restaurant in Bemidji, and I want to go there again if they're still open for business and highly recommended. It was in an old power generation plant or water treatment plant or something like that.

Anybody know the place I'm talking about?

T Juan's Restaurante & Cantina

T'Juan's was closed all winter. I heard that they may be reopening, or maybe they already have. I would try and call first before you go there. If it is open, I would recomend going there.

New ownership and it doesn't sound like it is what it used to be.

It is open now. New ownership and they do not have much selection from the menu yet, hopefully they improve. I don't really remember what it was like before but I thought the food was okay, good chips and salsa if you ask me.

Wow,

That is not good news! We have been going there for years and are leaving this Friday for two weeks and had planned at least two meals there. Will give it a shot but not holding out hope. There is a place very close to T Juans I think it is on First or Second Street and they had some pretty good food and fun, can't remember the name it was like an old Chicago speakeasy or something. Had pool tables, drinks, good pizza and chicken wings.

Looking forward to seeing some of you out on the water, T-Minus 4 days and counting!

Best of luck on your trip Windy.

Hope you "slaughter" 'em.

Say hello to Brian for me.

Thanks Geno,

I sure as heck know that I am not going to be keeping any Large Mouth Bass this trip! LOL

Or at least talking about it! LOL

Enjoy those fillets man.

See ya in a few days Windy!

Don't worry guys, the bass are done spawning now so catching them will be much more difficult. They are not congregated.

As for food I believe t'juans is still getting going, might want to try compeneros in Dorsett, phenomenal mexican food and reasonable. It's about 40 miles away, but worth the drive.

Big Smallie,

Is it really worth the drive? 40 miles there and back is a ton but if T Juans aint what it used to be then we might make the trip. I wonder if the new owners kept the recipies from the old staff. Their chips were good but I would say their salsa was below average, way too runny for my taste. We have some outstanding Mexican food places here in the Windy City so it is tough to compare them with Bemidji area, T Juans used to do that. We might give them one shot and then if it is not so hot make the drive during our second week. We also like Zona Rosa's in Walker and usually hit that place as well as the Wharf on our trips to Reeds and Northern Lights!

Thanks for the info, I never fish for bass up at Cass, though I did catch two of them in 5 minutes once. I was on the docks at Wishbone waiting for my father in law to head out and I just bought a new Zara Spook and wanted to see how the action was on the lure. I put it onto one of my walleye rods and casted it out from the docks towards the lilly pads that are to the side of the docks and started walking the dog back to the dock and a 6 pound bass crushed it within about 15 feet of hitting the water. I fought that beast for a good 10 minutes as she headed for cover and I had to work her out and around everything near the dock. My second cast to the exact same spot landed a 4 pounder as soon as the lure hit the water.

That is the extent of my bass fishing on Cass except for the 3 pounder I caught while I was muskie fishing a few years back on Bob Gray's boat. That thing hit my muskie lure as I hit a log right near one of the Potato Islands we were fishing.

3 casts 3 fish weighing 13 pounds. Who says bass fishing is hard on Cass! LOL

I think it is, there is also an italian place within a block. Sparkling waters in bemidji is also a great place to eat, it's more fine dining, but great martini's and steaks/prime rib, or seafood. Good luck

Thanks everybody. I appreciate the recommendations and the info!

Went to Cattails, on the recommendation of Dave from Finn n Feather.

I had the burgundy pepper steak, and it was AWESOME. It wasn't the biggest or best piece of meat, but the flavor was absolutely amazing. Very nice place, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good steak when they're in the north woods.

Cattails is the worst resturant that I have ever been too.... will never go back...I am not sure when the new mexican resturant will open... but you can't beat Slims or the Corner Bar for a quick bite in Bemidji.

wow - I have nothing but great things to say about Cattails! Best broiled walleye imo..

As for T-Juans, you have about 5 things to pick from on the menu now - haven't heard many good reports from folks trying it out...

I usually give resturants the benefit of the doubt, if it is bad once, I will give it a second chance but with cattails it has been a horrible experience each visit from both the service and the food itself. I just know there are better options in the area.

last two times I was there since they re-opened, they have more than 5 things on the menu?

All I know is that the menu now (from the last report I had) is a single sheet of paper with very limited choices compared to the old T Juans with the 4+ page menu.

I had called earlier this summer to ask when their fajita night is (the last owner had an all you can eat fajita night special) and was told that they don't have nightly specials... hopefully that will change.

Please let us know your experience & what we can expect as I have yet to eat there personally under the new ownership.

Just got back from our Cass Lake 2009 two week fishing trip and we did give the new T Juans a try and I was pleasantly surprised. Yes they do have a much more limited menu and yes as of today it is on a sheet of copy paper but they just opened May 5th so I can cut them some slack. Here is my report:

Salsa and chips - Much better salsa than the old T Juans. The old stuff was runny and not very flavorful. The new stuff comes in mild and hot and it is thick and chunky and stays on the chip. The mild was too mild and the hot was a tad too much for the wife so we mixed the two together for the perfect combination. The chips were as good as the old ones, maybe a tad better.

Drinks - Wife and I had margaritas. She went for the raspberry and I went for the original. Both were frozen and were quite tasty. I wish I had opted for the rocks version like I usually do as I suffered through a few "brain freezes"! LOL I would give this catagory a push.

Food - My wife went for the steak fajitas and they were good but only had green and red peppers in them would have liked to see some onions mixed in but overall up to snuff from the old owners.

I went for a combo platter that contained a steak taco, an enchilda and a mini burrito and all were good. Burrito had shredded steak which I would have preferred more shredded or ground but that is just me. Rice and beans were good and the price was about the same as we spent last year.

All in all I would go back and would recommend giving them a try. Maybe as they go along they will add items to the menu and then once they get them down right will go with printed menus.

One recommendation I would make to the owners, play some music! We were there early on a weekday, around 4:30 and there were a couple of tables taken and a few people playing darts and the place seemed like it was closed. The only sounds we heard were the electronic darts hitting the board. Invest in a little prerecorded Mexican music for a little atmosphere.

I hope they make a go of it because we do like stopping there while on vacation.

eyesorskis-

What are a few of the better options? I'm sure I'll be back up there next year and would love to try some of the places you're referring to. Thanks!

On the South Shore...  For the vast majority of anglers, ice fishing is over for the year, and what a great year it was.  You may hear of a few hardcore ice guides still gaining access in places targeting pike, but overall, we will now start watching for open holes appearing in the ice, the Rainy River making its presence known outside the Lighthouse Gap and satellite images from clear days showing progress up until the MN Fishing Opener.     The spring walleye season is complete as of April 14th.  As far as the lake goes, the focus now is pike up until the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 10th.     Ditches are running and soon bays will pop open enabling anglers to target huge pike while they head to spawning areas.  Pike fishing is year round on Lake of the Woods and can be excellent during the spring in back bays.   Some anglers will use dead bait much like they do on a tip up.  Others will cast spoons or troll crankbaits.  Pike fishing in the back secluded bays along the south shore of Lake of the Woods offers a unique fishing opportunity you don't need a big boat for and it can produce trophy sized pike.   The limit of pike on the Minnesota side of Lake of the Woods is a daily limit of 3, with all pike 30 - 40 inches having to be released.  An angler is allowed one trophy pike over 40 inches per day.  Some anglers choose to get measurements, take some pictures, release the fish and get a graphite mount.  All good options. On the Rainy River...  The spring walleye season is in the books!  Overall, big numbers of walleyes caught and released on the Rainy River (along with some absolute giants).  Thank you to all who traveled up, had patience with some long lines, helped out others and shared in this spring tradition of catching walleyes (and sturgeon).    A sincere thank you to all who help this spring tradition happen behind the scenes.  Koochiching County did a great job clearing ice from the boat ramps on the river as soon as possible.  Many agencies work together to make this tradition safe, respectful and enjoyable.  Again, thank you.   The Wheeler's Point boat ramp at the mouth of the Rainy River located 12 miles north of Baudette is open.  Thank you to a number of resort owners combined with some visitors in boats working together to drill holes, make waves, and coax the last remaining stubborn ice away from the ramp.  It is teamwork like this that makes the resort / fishing community in these parts special.   Initial reports for sturgeon are excellent.  Good numbers being caught and released.  Anchored up in a hole or on the slope of a hole with a no roll sinker and sturgeon rig is the ticket.  A sturgeon rig is about an 18 inch leader with a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers and emerald shiners.  Local resorts and bait shops have all the equipment you need.     Sturgeon fishing is open through May 15th.  Here are the specific seasons for sturgeon fishing...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  With many areas of open water showing up along with some heaves and cracks, travel on the ice up at the Angle is pretty much finished up.  You may see a local in an airboat which can traverse over both ice and open water delivering mail to the Oak Island post office or bringing supplies to a resort, but the watch for open water is on.   For now, folks will be fishing pike and sturgeon and paying attention to aerial images of open water and ice out on the lake until the MN Fishing Opener on May 10th.  Time to make plans!  For more information on spring and summer fishing, visit fishingminnesota.com.

If you do ever get ahold of him. Also suggest he make sure his battery is fully charged. If it's been sitting unused all winter, it might have enough to light it up but not run it so it shuts off.   Also, let us know what he does find out if he gets it fixed it might help someone else. 👍

Thank you very much for your feedback Leech and Kettle. Very tough for me to help the neighbor when he doesn't respond to my messages.    Oh well, but thanks again for your help.

OnX in your hands?  Geez… nobody’s safe anymore! 😂   Need the waypoints for the deer tick hotspots?

Speaking of the river. Got my onX app.  I might have to ride my dualsport up and check out that state land on the otherside to sluice up a bird!  🤣

At least I know now that I should keep an eye out for the stealthy one flying through the water, rather than over it!!

Just thought it looks like something you might see coming to your call, across the river!  🤣

Try contacting Cody Hill.  He’s always on the fish and based in Pelican Rapids, just southeast of Moorhead.   https://www.chillguideservice.com/about-cody-and-chill   Those are your closest lakes.  Otherwise, like mentioned, the Red River is your best bet.  I’ve never fished that area though so I can’t give you any starters.
