Big Cormorant Lake Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Hey Mike if you give me a call, I may be able to drag myself to Big Cormorant and we can do some fishing, and I can steer the boat towards a hidden loon nest bald eagle nest if you bring you camera gear. Call Me if you still have my number, if not, just reply here and I will call you.

Paul

Paul, I always have my camera gear. If your number starts with 218-329, then I still have it. I'll be in touch. Just note, it's not this weekend, it's the next.

Thanks

I was at the access and talked to the the engineers from the DNR. They told me they are paving the access and making spots for 28 vehicles and trailers I assume. He mentioned a rearing pond and toilets which I assume to be a building and not a porta potty. This man also mentioned a home owner selling land by the buckhorn access which I assume to be to the west of the dock. Sounds like they might be renevating that one as well. After reading the DNR's survey from 2008 they are going to need the room. I still think its the dead sea but many will argue. I try not to fish in the backyard! Should be nice for the tourney this fall!

Was out on the Dead C tonight and caught a little of everything. From talk at buckhorn it sounded like the walleyes were biting on crawlers and fatheads. A few fish here and there from that 2005 class. I guess Im notorious, cause my motor doesnt have a cover. LOL oh well better than being notorious for being the guy without a boat. Glad I have the motor cowl solved and just found a replacement. Its nice to see some guys out there who visit this site. Hey X Im in the area, drop me a line at [email protected], sounds like you'll be here this weekend. Usually dont fish Big C on weekends but your welcome to tag along. Boat isnt fancy but it floats, and you can smoke em if ya got em.

  • 2 weeks later...

How's the walleye fishing been on Cormorant Lake? I have never fished it and plan on coming to test it this weekend to prepare for the tourament in 3 weeks.

I have been trolling #5 and 7 shad raps on the weed edge in 12 to 16 ft of water! Or slip bobbers and leeches in 17 to 22 ft!

I would agree most will be pretty tight-lipped with the tournament right around the corner. I'm fishing FLW Championship in Wisconsin in a couple weeks and am noticing that same thing - nobody's talkin'. I won't be fishing the Big C event this year but will throw this out there - the fish were on-fire mid-day last weekend on cranks. I was only able to put in 2 hours on Sunday and boated 4 fish 16"-19" with one pole - probably about 7-8 lbs worth. Nothing that may win the tournament but still good fish for the box I'd say.

Was on Big C last night and it was pretty slow. caught one before dark - -15 inches and then four right away at 9 p.m. pulling raps then nothing else and left at Midnight.

The Rockbass were active though ...

Figured poeple would be tight lipped but figured I'd see what I could get. Thanks for the advice you did give. I've got my tricks to get fish in the boat, I'll just have to pre-fish and see if they work on Cormorant as I'm used to fishing Ottertail and Mille Lacs mostly.

The guy I talked to at the access didn't get anything last night - -he ran cranks in 9 fow and was skunked. He ran in 9 fow the night before and did pretty well, but it was windy the night he did well.

Huh...with cranks at night that seems like about the right depth. With the full moon I would've expected a better report. Maybe the wind did have something to do with.

As for the mid-day fish I'd try a bit DEEPer. wink

I'll be out this weekend off and on checking lure running depths and that's where I'll be - the crazy guy in the red boat going around in circles out in the middle.

Not sure why it has been "slow" during the full moon. Strange. Last year was good, this year not so good.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
