Looking for somewhere closer to home than north of Duluth.

Is the Snake good for fishing...I have heard some good reports, and is there public access?

Thanks.

The snake has some excellent fishing.. smallmouth, pike, and some wallleye are present. I believe there is an access near pine city. I've only fished the river north of there near woodland through private access and had excellent fishing. My brother has fished near the dam in pine city and had good results for smallmouth and catfish.

The public launch is right in Pine City on the north end. I have been there once this year but we went the cross lake direction. Did ok on the small mouth but were chasing crappies mainly.

You can also launch on pokegama lake and access the river from there...lot's of pike, largemouth bass, crappie, and sunnies. I've also caught some dandy walleyes and silver bass below the 35 bridge when the boat traffic is quiet. Below the cross lake dam is wading territory, full of smallies. I fish the snake from it's headwaters all the way down to where it dumps into the croix (also a very productive area), so needless to say it's one of my favorite places to fish.

That sounds great. I have the same feeling about the Vermilion River out of Lake Vermillion, though grass and weeds get pretty bad quickly except in the faster moving waters.

Will try to head up in the next couple weeks. Thanks.

After much eye strain, it appears that the Snake starts up in Aitkin County east of Mille Lac....I am guessing that a lot of the river north of Mora is not navigable/floatable?

The DNR map for the river provides lots of detail.

MMS3rd you are correct. From what I remember it gets real shallow in spots not too far up from Grasston I'm not sure you can make to sr 107 in a boat.

Posted

The DNR has a good map? I want to find some bridges near Knife lake/Mora that I can explore.

Posted

There are a good number of bridges with in 10 miles of knife lake that you can explore. On is north of Knife like and county road 3 heading east off of 65. There is one just north of mora on highway 65 and also on as you are comming in to town on the south end of mora. There is also on out on county road 6 going west of town past the high school there is a canoe park there. There is one out on county road 11 between State high way 23 and 65 that one is probably a little more than 10 miles from Knife lake.

Posted

Yep, it's all canoe country in the upper region, and even that is tough in alot of places. I'm much more successful just throwing on some sandles and getting my feet wet.

Posted

The river is very low right now and you will not get anywhere near Grasston with a regular fishing boat. Even with a jon boat you're dodging sand bars upstream from Pokegama once you get to the powerlines. The stretch from Pokegama to Cross is probably a better bet although it can get busy on weekends when the weather is nice.

Does anybody know were the carry in access is in the town of Mora? I see on the map that you can carry a canoe into the river off of Hwy. 3 and go downstream into Mora if I bring two vehicles I'd like to try to catch a smallmouth bass

Posted

If you know where the road is just north of Jerry's Bait it is the same road that goes by the high school there is a canoe parke out there on the snake river you could park your second car there it is only about 2 mile off of high way 65 I am not sure of the street name but it turns in to county road 6.

Huge51, Is this correct? Also does anybody in the area have a canoe and want to check it out with me? I am heading up tonight because I took wednesday-friday off work to go fishing. We can launch by my cabin on 3 an use one of my vehicles. Call or Text me at 651-442-5208. or drop me an email before 7

I believe he is talking about the second picture. Let me know how you do. I wouldn't mind making that trip. I have been trying to figure out where I can fish in those small rivers around Mora/Knife

JB I fish the snake right out from Pokegama quite a bit. We have lots of success with the largemouths, but have only caught a fluke smallie once. Any tips on finding the smallies? I've never ventured up to Cross. Thanks

Posted

Just as you say, the smallies are a fluke for the most part in that stretch. I've only caught 1 smallie that I remember in that area. I've caught some WAY upstream (north of mora). Otherwise all the smallies I catch are below the cross lake dam. Although I've caught a few from shore on cross lake as well.

Fishing below the cross lake dam can be a real multi species bonanza though. I've caught smallies, largemouths, crappies, pike, muskie, walleye, sheephead, and redhorse.

how big are them bass?

Any one ever hit Fish lake near Mora. Staying at the resort and debating on bringing the boat. I see the lake is only ten feet deep so seems a little shallow.

I fish the snake river almost 3 to 4 times a week and it is very shallow right now and unless you have a caneo or a jet drive jon you are going to have a tough time going.20061648alumacraftpics8.jpg

I have seen trophy bass and northerns and walleyes come out of that river, imo I would rather fish the river than the area lakes. Its that good, but Im kind of a river rat tho too! lol

We get some decent bass, been slow this year though. Fished out of my buddies Lund over the 4th and we were fine in the river. Thanks for the tip JB I'll have to hit that area up. I'll post a pic if I get anything worthy! Did catch a 21.5 bucket mouth after opener in the river. The pic is stuck on my phone though.

SRK,

How's that boat treating you? Have you tried it on the Croix yet?

I have a question for you. Could you shoot me an email at bornofice at yahoo dot com?

Posted

Is this the same Snake River that runs also through McGrath? If so, why is the water so reddish? Is it the sand?

Posted

That would be the same snake, and yes, it's probably the sand.

Im unsure around the mcgrath area, but I know north of mora about 15-17 miles its really rocky and rapids, there is a camp ground up there too, i cant remember the name now tho. Its up by woodland area tho.

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay.  Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of.  There are fish in both areas.     Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers.  Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water.  Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home.   On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent.  Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well.   On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.    You never know when the fish will move through.  Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success.  Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River...  The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation.  A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice.  There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year.    The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd.    Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle.  Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish.  Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats.    Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees.  Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them.  Check with a NW Angle resort for info.   Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective.  Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick.  Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday).  Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm.  Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds).  Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up.  Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips.  Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action.  I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite.  When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook.  Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook.  May try some pike suckers next trip.   Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow).  Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake.  Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top.  Will probably have to block it up again next time up.   Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
