Lake Minnetonka Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

On Browns you can park off 15 just West of Brackets. For Wayzata I have parked where you park for the Waysata bay boat access in the summer. I wouldn't drive out yet. There was only 5-6 inches on the main lake as of a few days ago.

Nothing like a violent cross country skier smile That is an odd situation and his dog does sound out of control.

Im going out to grays on saturday and I will let you know how much ice there is. The wayzata bay parking lot would be the best place to park but they have mulitple fences so you can not get to the ice. They usually take these down once it is safe to go on.

I'm heading to Grays Bay tomorrow morning and hoping to be set up / fishing around 7A. My plan is to target crappies and pike (on tips) along the weed edges in approximately 12 - 19 fow depending on the location. Feedback / thoughts on this plan?

I have a question on the western side of the lake. I started fishing Minnetonka about 8 years ago, and have focused my efforts in Wayzata/Grays bay. I never ventured west of Browns Bay, until the very end of the season last year. I tried Maxwell one day, then Crystal bay - targeting pike, with poor results.

Can you access Crystal Bay to drive on? When I was out, I just walked on from the parking lot facing Maxwell bay.

++++++

Was out on Grays tonight; had 4 pike in 13-18 FOW. No size.

I am unaware of any place to drive on to Crystal, and have never seen vehicles on the ice there.

Nice!

I'm afraid. I should be, right? 2011 Toyota Camry with new tires one month ago, but not snow tires.

They are now driving on the west side of Wayzata bay. Earlier in the afternoon I only saw vehicles on the east side, but at dusk there were 8 or so vehicles out on the west side.

Fished Grays again today. Slow - 1 small pike. Lots of vehicles, and of course, 1 moronic Mercedes Benz (with 2 teens) racing around the perimeter of the bay. Complete Delta Bravos; Mommy and Daddy must be so proud of you.

Yeah, I was out there too with some buddies.

Saw that guy try to drive under the bridge into Wayzata bay, he stopped and backed up. Wish there was a cop around, and was hoping to see them find a thin spearing hole.

I was surprised to see a big diesel out there on the ice. I don't think it was thick enough for that.

just west of the maxwell launch on the south side of the road is a fire road access where you can drive out.

.

Don't drive on wayzata or the main lake if your reading this. Each ice sheet is different thickness with plenty of ice not able to hold a vehicle

If I remember correctly, a few years ago they dumped some chemicals to kill the weeds. I was out there about 1.5 weeks ago and didn't mark anything.

I had someone drive a car past be and my 5 year old on wayzata bay on Saturday and could feel the wave and the cracking. He was doing about 20 mph. Same Tonka summer driving on ice.... Always amazes me.

Good Luck!

SLOW DOWN.

Was on the west side of Wayzata bay this afternoon. 12.5-13" of good ice.

Am I the only person alive that drives 10mph or less on lakes? You think that extra minute you gain by driving 20+mph is going to accomplish anything at all?

i believe there should be posted speed limits at lake accesses.. If someone is speeding (cars and trucks only?), it should be the same consequences as if they were speeding on land. Onlookers should be allowed to either call the police or perhaps the TIP line. Not only does their recklessness endanger their life but everyone else. Especially at night when visibility is greatly reduced.

100% agree jim

Someone or someone's fish house is going to get ran over/into...just a matter of time.

Good thought guys, but I don't think that any law enforcement agency would want to enforce it. And I certainly wouldn't want to pay for it.

Not that I don't agree with you, but it's just not going to happen.

So if I wanted to I could top my car out as fast as it goes on the ice and I would not be breaking any laws? No speeding, reckless driving, careless driving or anything? I would imagine they can nail these guys for something. If a "no-wake" zone can be enforced than a posted speed limit at access locations for cars/trucks does not seem out of the picture. If they can spend the money on studies to tell me a 16 inch fish can be kept but not a 17 inch fish I would like to think pounding a couple speed limit signs wouldnt be that much.

Just my 2 cents

Hennepin county water patrol should have some say in this issue. Yes they work out of boats in the summer but why can't they patrol via snowmobile in the winter? Just a thought and it would give those seasonal police officers more work in the winter time. I'm sure they can or already have sleds outfitted for patrols.

There is a speed limit on the ice that all motorized vehicals must obey, sleds wheelers and car, trucks etc. Unforntunaly the police and dnr don't seem to inforce it

I can't say with 100% confidence this is true, but I remember hearing a while back that most local police departments, with the exception of the Sheriff's Water Patrol and DNR are not allowed to go on the ice except for life/death emergencies and even then are not allowed to take their vehicles out there (only sleds, etc.). Pretty hard for a local cop on foot to ticket someone on the ice driving too fast. BTW, the DNR and Sheriff's did a "speed trap" on Minnetonka last weekend ticketing snowmobile riders driving too fast.

Yes, I many times have seen them with a speed trap on the channel from Seton to Cook's bays. Snow mobiles and wheelers are supposed to observe the same speed limits as boats in the summer.

it does have a speed limit for snowmobiles so i assume its the same for cars and trucks i think snowmobiles is like 40 or 50 mph id like to see cars going half that fast, driving fast on ice not only puts you in danger but also bystanders and the people who have to come plunk you and your vehicle out of the lake, people need to quit being so dang selfish and start thinking about others and if you are just to big a jerk to care to be surprised if i punch ya in the teeth for buzzing my shack.

Nice!   It would be great if they had some kind of brake, so you don't end up on your neighbors YouTube video going down the driveway! 😆

Last month I went searching online for a trailer jack with pneumatic tires. Instead I found the video below showing a relatively quick and easy upgrade to your existing jack:     It's worked pretty well. I definitely had to mess around with finding the right combination of spacers, washers, and locknut pressure that wouldn't bind up the wheels. However, it is a pretty sweet setup and allows me much better control. We live at the end of a half-alley. My garage faces the end so when I need to hook my boat up to the truck, I have to pull it out into my driveway and then swivel it 180 degrees to face towards the street. The handle is what really makes the difference and now the trailer jack wheels don't slide on the asphalt. Has anyone else done this conversion?

I've got a pile of crawlers ready to go - a nice side benefit of all the rain in the metro lately.   At the very least, I hope that the remaining trappers are making some better money off of the higher prices. I would think that it would be a great way for local kids to make some cash. I can see why it wouldn't make for a great way to make a living as an adult.

Went out yesterday with the sunshine. I did find crappies in the shallows on a darker stained lake with Temps at 58 degrees. They had no interest in my baits

That's part of it.  Several recent years of drought have definitely played a role.   There's other factors too.  MN does not allow importation of live bait from other states either.  That really affects the amount of golden shiners available, most of which are not trapped here.  In other words, demand exceeds supply.   Lots of bait trappers and dealers have simply hung it up in recent years.  Its hard work for not much money.  The two nearest me are both done as of last October.  They both told me its just not worth it anymore.  One of them had been there for 45 years.   My advice would be to learn how to effectively fish with artificial lures more often.  I've slowly weened myself off the use of live bait nowadays.

Think the Free crawlers in the back yard are going to take a hit this summer! 🤭

Correction, rainbow minnows are at least 75 cents each, and leeches are $60 per pound. lol

Their coming! Was poking around southern center mn last Friday and found about 20 on a hill side, all to small to pick yet.  Spots on the GPS! 🤗

Water Temps 48-52. I tried for crappies and caught two walleye. I can't even crappie fish. 1/32 ounce jig and a tiny minnow
