FYI, if you were involved in any of these accidents, or any accident for that matter, I WOULD NOT be discussing it on this forum or any public forum, including facebook or myspace. Although we all appreciate details of what actually took place from those involved it may come back to bite you in the future.

Exactly muskielaw! First of all, if your brother's face was cold and had to turn around, then maybe he wasn't a good spotter to have in the front of the boat! SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't care if you don't know how you didn't see the person you hit, you hit them!!!!! Take some boat safety courses before the next time you get on the lake.

lake doctor. FYI i have. I would put money on it you have not. Yes there was an accident. I would guess you have not been in a boating accident. Until you come close to or being in one. I feel you should not say anything. You do not know the daily struggle I am going through. And yes I know the other parties are struggling through it also. Duck slayer and I started talking about it on here because the information being said was incorrect. My whole point for saying anything is to bring more awareness to wearing life jackets ALL the time. You attacking people on the forum does not help the situation.

I agree with you guys on wearing life jackets and accidents do happen. We all have to be more concience of what's going on when we are on the water. I don't like when someone is sitting in the front of my boat when we are under power. I like to be able to see the whole area. I'm not saying you are right or wrong and I'm glad you shared your info. Take what you can learn from these guys and just be glad everyone is OK.

I agree with saloonsoftball76, attacking people will not solve anything. plus what makes you think a boating course wouldv'e solved anything? people go through drivers ed but there are still car accidents. Lets just leave it go, they've been through enough.

Not a wise bet. I do have my certification and have had it since I was 12 years old. This wasn't an attack on you. Don't tell me that I can't say anything because of someone's negligence! I have seen idiots on the water. Have I personally been involved, no, but I know others who have and wouldn't wish it on anyone. This needs to be a reminder that you need to be observing your whole surroundings and if you have any doubt, slow down! Nobody is perfect and accidents happen, but don't start throwing out excuses when others get hurt because you could and should have done something different.

Thanks ranger20! Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to come down on anyone. I just don't like it when people don't take responsibily for their actions. Also, don't come on a public forum and tell others not to make comments regarding a topic! I wasn't the one involved in the accident, but I'm also not the one trying to cover up something that may have been prevented.

it could have been prevented but it wasnt and it is what it is now i just hope this topic never has to be brought up here agian

This maybe beating a dead horse but I think a safty class should be requires for anyone who operates a boat over a certain horse power. These big boats have alot of power and go way to fast especially for an inexperienced boater. Im not saying that any of these accident were from inexperienced boaters or that the accidents would not have happened but anyone can buy a boat that goes 60 MPH hop on a lake and let her loose. just my 2 cents

Am I wrong? As I understand it, it is illegal to have someone in the bow seat of the boat when under power?

From the Minnesota boating guide: It is against the law; to ride on the gunwales, bow, transom, or decking while underway...

I have operated under this understanding ever since I have had a boat and will not allow it. It not only blocks your line of sight you are likely to have the person in the bow ejected from a wave etc.

I would assume that means sitting on the actual bow, not sitting on the front deck. I've seen many riding up there and have never seen anyone pulled over it.

I,ve seen boats underway with someone ridding on the bow seat, and the driver having to stand to see around them, this is also illegal for the driver to be standing while operating under power, boaters needs to operate under the pretense of "what would happen if.....!" Use common sense, it not that hard. be safe ... be smart, you'll have more fun.

I like how these people use the eight foot wave excuse. For being on milleLacs 35 years I can/t say I have ever seen Eight foot waves But once... And I know there wasn,t any in the last 3 weeks. And there is NO excuse for running into another Boat. HOW DUMB are you sounding NOW?????

It never fails to amaze me how a few people have such quick knee jerk reactions and such close minded opinions..."lets ban drinking, lets enforce life jackets being worn, or a mandatory boating test" SERIOUSLY??? (hey wait lets just enforce bullet proof vests, pretty sure there are more gun related deaths than drowning or make people take snowmobile, atv, and bicylcle driving tests while were at it...Come on there are careless and yes even plain and simply stupid people that care more about having a good time than safety or other people's feelings around them and it will always be that way no matter what the law is. Chalk it up to careless mistakes just like the ones that happened last year and that will happen next year and so on... I agree with most of you in that we don't want ANY more laws we already have way to many(many of which dont help very much). If the few of you with that opinion want to wear your life jacket while you drink your shasta holding your boat permit in one hand and your soap box in the other...live it up!! The rest of us will wave at you as you drive by...

Dont like drinking on a boat...DONT DRINK!! Don't feel safe enough not wearing a life jacket...WEAR ONE!!! Feel you need a course to drive a boat safely...GREAT TAKE ONE!! Just don't suggest the rest of us may need to follow!!

HAPPY FISHING!! smile

Jay, it's not a knee jerk reaction for me to say I wouldn't mind seeing a ban on drinking and boating. I drink on occasion but I don't get behind the wheel of a car, boat, atv, etc. I don't drink in the boat and I don't allow drinking in my boat when I guide. That still doesn't make me amune from a drunk boater plowing into me. If it was just yer butt on the line, drink away. But if you're drunk you put everyone else at risk.

For the most part I wasn't directing that comment at you I sincerely see your view point and you are entitled to it. But honestly drinking like many things can be dangerous in most situations in the wrong hands (or mouth in this case)...how many domestic disturbances (or violent crimes) are alchohol related, and unless we instil prohibition again no way around it. There are far more people that don't abuse it than people that do and I disagree to say because of a few (in the big sceme of things) that we should ban it, in my opionion that statement is a knee jerk reaction...But I do understand your concerns... AGREE TO DISAGREE smile

I'm not disagreeing with you Jay, because I also think that there are too many laws and a lot of them are knee jerk because one person got injured or killed.

However, dont we already have a BWI/DWI law on boating? So people can have their one or two cocktails an hour in the boat and still be a legal .08?

It seems that the only place someone is going to get caught drinking on the lake is either on Minnetonka or if they have an accident. Being we already have these laws in place and we still have numberous DWI offenses every day, that certainly doesn't stop if from happening. It only keeps the responsible people from doing it...the others will do as they may regardless of the law.

I agree, I rarely drink and even less often do I drink while in a boat (passenger or driver) however I dont want to be told I can't if I want to enjoy a cold drink on a hot day in my boat with a buddy...Punish the abusers not the general public...

I don't disagree with you Jay, I don't see the harm in a drink or two with a buddy in a boat. Some just get out of hand and then you end up with bad situations. Punishing the good sucks, but I don't know how you find a happy medium on it.

Wow did this thread take a dive in a hurry. Should a guy drink and drive no. I do not really believe anyone thinks this is a good idea but yet some do. A greater threat though lies in the use of a GPS and a lake map chip. How many of us have found we were paying to much attention to the map and not enough time to what is going on in front of us it is easy to do. Just a thought

I highly disagree with the GPS and map problem. As someone who relies on current mapping technology, I am not going full throttle and looking at my GPS. I firmly believe that most people who utilize a GPS with a chip have an idea on where to go and just use the map to locate structure at a slow, no wake speed. Also, if you are fishing structure, more than likely there are others who are fishing the same structure. If others are in the area, you need to use common sense and slow down anyway and extra attention if you are looking at electronics. It isn't that hard, I'm not sure why it is for you.

I just perused this thread for the first time a few minutes ago. Sheesh. I'll admit I didn't read close enough to tell you who hit who or whose leg broke or whatever but I will weigh in my 2 cents.

1. 8 foot waves? Bull.

2. Accidents happen? Accidents happen on the street, where there are a lot of cars packed into defined spaces. On the lake you aren't limited by the road. You can go around. If there is a lot of traffic slow down. You don't even have to pay attention as much as you do driving down a country road. You don't have trees and blind intersections or whatever else to preclude your vision... except these bogus 8 foot waves.

You should never ever ever hit another boat.

I will agree with that. Open your eyes, pay attention. With very few distractions on the water like bobby said, you should NEVER hit another boat or even get close to it. And if your in a boat with a buddy that is way to drunk to drive, DON'T let him drive. Take over.

Tiller boats can make it difficult for the person running the boat to see when there is someone sitting in front of the driver. When I fish with my buddy who has a tiller, I always sit on the floor while he drives so he can see. Might not be the most comfortable ride, actually isn't that bad, but at least I know he can see everything in front of him. It probably doesn't help that I'm 6' 5" either, lol.

IMO, not being able to see is no excuse. If you can't see, then move people around so you can see. If you can't see, then slow the heck down. That's a solvable problem.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
