I'm looking to get into trout fishing finally. Does anyone know of any good trout streams or rivers in the Carlton County area?

White Pine, Otter, and Blackhoof are a few streams to try. Check out Corona lake too.

Been at the blackhoof a few times and caught one unclipped rainbows and seen some more small fish... lots of brush and hard to fish make sure to pack extra hooks, weights, and flies.

and be prepared to walk

I was out at the Blackhoof last week near county Rd 103. I caught a little brooky and had a few bites. Yes, extra hooks is something you must bring with.

I just got home from the Otter today. No luck. I tried a few spots, but not even a bite. I also tried the Midway River in Esko.Got a few bites, but no fish in the bucket.

I'm thinking about heading down to the Blackhooof near the Nemadji River off of hwy 23.

See if you can get permission from someone who lives on 104 and walk down from there. I'll admit it's a hike though. Never fished near Nemadji. My bro got a few Browns on Midway outside Esko but I don't have a clue where he goes. I've never done very good on any of these streams with high water. Otter seemed best to produce 10"-13" Brookies and sometimes some bigger ones. Just a hook and worm with just enough weight to suspend half way down. White Pine holds some dandy native Brookies but you gotta find em! I've done OK walking in off hwy 33.

It's been a couple years since I've hit all these rivers but I would assume there's still fish in them.

Good Luck!

I wish slaughterhouse creek was still worth going to. Good times when I was a kid!

Casting flies or flippin with spinning gear?

firefighterj93 how did the blackhoof look for water clarity... when i was there earlier this year it was really muddy from the clay im guessing... is it still really muddy or was it pretty clear?

Fished White Pine off of Maple Grove yesterday. Water is a little high yet, and still cold. No fish, not even a bite. I only tried a small mepps, tomorrow I will try a hook and worm.

Fished Otter near Carlton a couple weeks ago and it was very high and fast, no way to keep a crawler down for long, and the mepps and panther martins went unnoticed.

With this last rain the creeks look high again, think I'll wait a couple days to head out. Love pan fried trout.

Used to live just off the Midway near Esko, and we could always count on a dinner of frying pan brookies a few years ago.

Great day out, many brookies and one decent rainbow.

firefighterj93 - Do you have a black truck? Did you fish Sunday evening?

Posted

The water is pretty clear where I was on the Blackhoof off of county 103. I went further up stream and it was actually a kinda dirty. Somehow it cleans up within two miles.

Odonata- I wasn't out. I do have a black and gray Chevy though.I'm hoping to get out this week, I hate being busy with random things, no time for fishing.

Where were you fishing today?

I was out saturday and caught many brookies as well... does it continue to get better or worse as the water lowers?

Firefighterj93~ Fished the 'hoof on Sunday. Most of the land around 103 is private, do you have a land-owner connection?

I know a guy who lives on a road off 103, can't remember the road, I just know how to get there (sorry). I park near his house and walk down a trail from there. It's a small jaunt, but not anything too terrible.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
