Sonar/GPS

I am in the market to replace my older Lowrance Sonar/GPS and have heard very mixed reviews on the Lowrance HD5's and 7's; in fact the reviews on various websites of large retailers were mostly poor. Could anyone provide any insight and/or suggestions? I have a 2001 Lund Magnum SE 1950.

I just saw a demo on those models at a seminar at Aronson's Marina Saturday.

They looked very impressive and were very easy to read with plenty of color selections for viewing preferences.

If I was in the market for a new deptfinder I certainly would consider one of them! The rep. did say that he prefered the 8 inch model over the largest screen model.

What kind of bad reviews did you read? I guess I am curious.. I think they had a couple problems that where already ironed out before release.

The HDS units will not work with any navionic chip (update to fix is promised soon), some issues with satellite locking in, problems with reading bottom in shallow dirty water. The HDS10 unit I used did have a very nice clean screen when running due to the digital signal processing filters, but could not find bottom in a very dirty section of missouri river where Humminbird worked well due to TVG filter.

You hope they get the "bugs" ironed out before they release them. I've had some issues with the LMS 332,339 series...the LCX 15 still works great and the LCX 27's have performed well. Some places still have the 27s for sale as long as the supply lasts.

I think everything is fixed on the May 15 software update that is coming out...
