We Have been hitting Slim creek, just north of Ely. Slow start to the run last week, but it's really starting to pick up now... average around 20-30 smelt per run with the seine net.

Pokegama or lakes nearby...Grand Rapids Area...no big secret...not the first lake to go...

Not really close to BWCA-Duluth-Ely-Gunflint Trail-North Shore Lake Superior...no sense confusing folks...

Never said Pokegama or Grindstone, the lakes I am talking about are in this forums area. Find an inland lake that has smelt.... DNR Website... My son is sending the info to "chaff"

I done, cyaz.

The crappie are biting....

I am with Northlander on this one, if you are just going to tease people, please do not post. Most of us do not have the time to play the "Where are the smelt?" game.

I agree with you Alwysfshn, Stop all the nonsence posts and get to the real deal. Thanks to all the guys that posted and I can see why the last Smelt post got off topic. I know that those that posted for other then Duluth area where just trying to show that Duluth isn't the only show in town for smelt. Its just that we are thinking Duluth now and thats where were going. Thanks to all that have posted and maybe one day we can check out the other Smelting areas. That would be sweet as well.

Well I left it open to other lakes in the Grand Rapids area besides Pokegama, and you posted similar information including counts, in the Grand Rapids Forum, so are you telling them that they were running over there and us they were running over here...??? confused

Anyway unless you are misleading the Grand Rapids group, you were talking about that area, and the big Smelt lake over there is Pokegama, followed by some of the smaller lakes...

And yes there are plenty of Inland lakes with Smelt...pretty much any lake with significant water 60'+, with a population of Trout, that someone has introduced them into...

Plenty up north around Grand Marais, and Ely...and yes they spawn there too, so they have there own runs...

But back to the Duluth Lake Superior Area...no confirmed runs yet, but may change soon...

Ashland is reporting a good run last night...

NOAA shows very little ice on Superior except for up on the Canadian North Shore...

Coastwatch reports a little warmer pocket of water around the Lester...almost as warm as Ashland Bayfield warmer pocket...

A little cold rain now...supposed to be a lot more Friday and Saturday...but I don't see that much on radar...oops now I do...might hit hard or pass a little North of Duluth...bring your raincoat...

NOAA also showing wind and waves lessening a little Friday and Saturday, but really ramping up for Sunday night...could be a real good blow...

N I don't understand why you delete Gazers post. Just adding a little humor to a lot of humor! I have read and been offended by a lot more posts then what he JOKINGLY wrote. I guess you don't want any winter Apostle Island advice anymore. Just my two cents, have a good day.w1

no you dont need a trout stamp, but if you plan to fish for trout or salmon during the day you would need one.

Because I got the feeling he was making light of the topic being off topic and his post would keep it going off topic. This isnt a easter egg hunt. Its a smelting report not a guess where Im getting smelt game. Those of us who spend our time and money hunting down smelt and giving good reports and info dont need that stuff starting.

As far as the Islands info I have several very good sources thanks. But can always use more of course. wink As you know its a give and take.

N, I hear what you are saying about getting off topic. I think it was a total misundertanding. From my perspective Gazer was just saying this is fun. If you go back and look we were talking smelting on/in the north shore, park point, the islands, Lake Pokegama, and other inland lakes. There was no clear direction, so Gazer just said this is getting fun. This is a great site, and there is knowledge unparrelled here, no doubt about it. I know for certain there are people who didn't know there was smelt in Pokegama and other inland lakes.

As for the islands I understand a guy as well connected as yourself does have many friends/contacts. But you hit the nail on the head when you said, can always use more. Hope this clears up where I was coming from. Q

Thats the problem with reading, you never know what the author truly means unless he does a good job making sure you do.

Tel ya what Ill start a Lake Superior and Tribs Smelting Report and there wont be any confusion.

Was on Pokegama last night and got about a dozen smelt in 30 or so pulls. Beautiful night to be out but they never ran. Just thought I would let my former home town folks know whats going on a little to the west.

We were out last night. Quite a few people at the mouth of the Lester River, but no one was getting any. Went to Park Point at about 9:30-12:00. We pulled in three smelt in several tries. So they weren't running, but it was a nice night to be out.

Boy this wind is something. I was going to go deer hunting for the early doe season but the wind is a little strong.

My electronics often say that I am on land when I'm on the water. Trust is a two-way street!

Fishing is still pretty good.  Went with a friend and the dog yesterday for about 5 hours, managed 19 largemouth and 10 pike.  I normally don't take photos of pike but several of these fish were on the larger side and quite thick so they made the cut.  One of these days my fishing season is going to be over but for now the fish are still cooperating.

On our fall trip, we saw many examples of downed trees on Pine Island. Small trees being cut with chain saw and piled. Any insight on project?

On the South End...  Fall fishing on Lake of the Woods is excellent right now.  The colder water temps have the fish snapping.     Walleyes and saugers are being caught in a variety of locations across the south shore from 20 to 27 feet.  Water temps are in the low to mid 50's. Jigging with frozen, or live emerald shiners is catching a pile of fish.  Anchor up and jig over the side of the boat.  Typically, lots of small fish to sort through but you will get your keepers along with some larger walleyes. Jig colors to consider are gold, glow white, glow red, chartreuse, orange, and pink.  Gold combined with any one of these colors is often a good choice.   On the Rainy River... The river continues to get better and better with more walleyes moving in each week.  Good fish being caught in many sections of the river.  The morning and evening hours have had the best bite. Walleyes are actually being caught using three methods.  Jigging with frozen or live emerald shiners, pulling spinners and trolling crankbaits.  15 - 25 feet of water has been the norm. Sturgeon fishing continues to pick up as the water cools.  The "Catch and Release" sturgeon season is in place right now.  The river holds a myriad of species of fish.  Crappies, pike, smallmouth bass, suckers, bullheads and even an eelpout or two are being caught up and down the river.   Four Mile Bay is also holding some nice walleyes as they make their way in from the lake.  Various areas on the edge of the current and channel break are good spots to begin. Up at the NW Angle... Another great week of fall fishing up at the Angle.  Walleyes are keying in on various areas with structure.  Points, neck down areas with some current and transition areas from rock to mud are good right now. Walleyes are the most sought after but in the fall, lots of muskie and crappie anglers are around as well.  Good reports on a variety of species including jumbo perch and pike as the waters cool.      Put on some warm fall clothes, make sure your camera is ready and make some incredible fall fishing memories.  There is still time to get in that last fall trip.
