For those who go to Wisconsin Point, don't bother. The beach from the light house well past Dutchmen's is ice covered with huge chunks, and will likely stay that way for some time. The only part that might make it for smelting is the section between the last two parking lots by the lighthouse. That only has about a 30-50 yard band of broken up ice floating against shore.

Its only a smelt so lets not get too worked up here.

When they start to run on the point you'll all know.

Well we have no choice really.. We will be coming up on the 26th weather the smelt are running or not. This will be the only time we have to get up that way. Looks like we will be able to stay until Wednesday. I sure hope we can get into some during that time. Doesn't sound to promising??? What would be a good place to start looking in the Duluth area. Park point???

Park Point is your best bet. Try the Tot Lot, airport area and if you can find room by the bridge. If its too windy to do the main lake than try the bay side by the airport or gi dip the rivers and creeks.

I do go after loopers - generally I have not been too successful over the years but this year has been my best.

Telling people they are running is not bragging IMHO and is helpful. This is a smelt run topic. Not necessarily Lake Superior. Out of the box, the box being Lake Superior.

It is also a very late night run.

Have fun, be careful and stay warm.

Ah some more clues to where are the smelt running. This reminds me of looking for the medallion for the St. Paul Winter Carnival. laugh

where is ashland?

Ashland is in Swissconsin, over by Bayfield and the Apostle Island...they usually run there before Duluth and the North Shore, because the water usually warms there before...

Ok, the good news... one guy in Ashland is reporting the start of a pretty good run...don't know where though...

Very early morning, 2-5 AM...some 2.5 Gallon pulls...It's Starting...Duluth area should follow in a few days, if this trend holds in Ashland... cool

Clues: Go west young man! Lake must have smelt in it!

He hit the jackpot last night.

Pokegama or lakes nearby...Grand Rapids Area...no big secret...not the first lake to go...

Not really close to BWCA-Duluth-Ely-Gunflint Trail-North Shore Lake Superior...no sense confusing folks...

Come on guys if your going to give reports please do that but dont lead people on. Telling people there is a run does no good for anyone except you sitting back watching others try to guess. If you dont have useful info on a run and want to say where then please dont post.

Ok, Ashland/Chequamegon Bay started slow on the 16th, and ran strong Sunday night, then not so much Monday...so it is going over there...

Their waters have been running a few degrees warmer...but with more sun it could warm enough in the next couple days to find a few...

It might be worth a few dips in the Lester soon...

Thinking of going to Park point this weekend to give it a try.

Haven't gone smelting in over 30 years. Want to show the boy how it is done.

Was wondering if I could park my travel trailer there for a place to sleep. Anyone know if they allow this?

Thanks

You are not allowed to park a camper on Park Point over night.(Although I have seen it done) You could however find a Wal Mart to park at after your done so you can sleep. You could also try your luck in a parking lot some place but you may get asked to move from there.

Im sorry I wont be out yet this weekend. I think its still to early but I will be checking it out Sat and Sunday nights. Ill let everyone know what I find out. Thats if its not raining the 1-2" they are predicting. frown

It only helps if you say where they are running! But I will guess Grindstone wich had a few good nights.

I remember it was last year and I was over there on the lester, i met a local guy and he said the smelt would run no matter the weather when it was time. they have to release those eggs no matter what. it was snowing and some people tried dipping in the lester, at first it seems like there was not going to be a run, i remember it was so cold i got frost bites, but then suddenly one guy caught a smelt, and the next thing you know the smelts were running like crazy. that night we got about two coolers full of smelt. so even though the weather is harsh and not warming up i beleive that they will run this weekend. and for you locals up there, you should give it another shot tonight to, and done be afraid to stay out late. they run late into the night. and for those of you who plan on making the trip from far away, stay late too.

So Fish_4_fun, You mean just because the smelt are not in the river in the evening they might move in during the night then move back out during the day?? I Didn't know that. I thaught once they were in the river that they were there to stay.. I know nothing about smelting ,(odviously) so this is good to know. Thanks again all who have given out any info. Like said before no matter what we will be up there from Sunday afternoon tell Wednesday. Thanks NorthLand for the park point info. I google earthed it last night and I see what you mean about if the main lake is rough to check the inside bay. I'll be sure to report on Wednesday or Thursday.

i dont know why they just dont stay in the river during the day, last year i was there for two nights, the first night they smelt ran ok, it started at 9. and than went on to like 2 in the morning, during the day while my dad was resting i tried smelting, nothing was there. so we waited until the night again and sure enough they ran again all night long. the fish comes in waves, so if they are not there during the evening, dont give up. stay out later and try dipping the river again every 15 minutes i guess. but if they are not there dont over work yourself, thats the common problem with me and my friends. they get so excited that they over work themselves when the fish are not running yet. than later on when the fish do run, they are tired. the point is ber persistant, and keep trying to find results.

I tried a few recreational dips last night down at the Lester. Not at it very long or late and it wasn't a fair try but there were 6 or so others dipping and waiting too. I agree with the earlier comment about smelt coming in despite the mid to high 40 degree water they are supposed to need. Last year the dipping was good when the Hermit Thrushes came through and I saw my first 2 yesterday. How's that for an indicator? I'll always remember my Iowa uncle telling me to get ready to spear spawning carp when the wild plum trees are in bloom.

Fishing is still pretty good.  Went with a friend and the dog yesterday for about 5 hours, managed 19 largemouth and 10 pike.  I normally don't take photos of pike but several of these fish were on the larger side and quite thick so they made the cut.  One of these days my fishing season is going to be over but for now the fish are still cooperating.

On our fall trip, we saw many examples of downed trees on Pine Island. Small trees being cut with chain saw and piled. Any insight on project?

On the South End...  Fall fishing on Lake of the Woods is excellent right now.  The colder water temps have the fish snapping.     Walleyes and saugers are being caught in a variety of locations across the south shore from 20 to 27 feet.  Water temps are in the low to mid 50's. Jigging with frozen, or live emerald shiners is catching a pile of fish.  Anchor up and jig over the side of the boat.  Typically, lots of small fish to sort through but you will get your keepers along with some larger walleyes. Jig colors to consider are gold, glow white, glow red, chartreuse, orange, and pink.  Gold combined with any one of these colors is often a good choice.   On the Rainy River... The river continues to get better and better with more walleyes moving in each week.  Good fish being caught in many sections of the river.  The morning and evening hours have had the best bite. Walleyes are actually being caught using three methods.  Jigging with frozen or live emerald shiners, pulling spinners and trolling crankbaits.  15 - 25 feet of water has been the norm. Sturgeon fishing continues to pick up as the water cools.  The "Catch and Release" sturgeon season is in place right now.  The river holds a myriad of species of fish.  Crappies, pike, smallmouth bass, suckers, bullheads and even an eelpout or two are being caught up and down the river.   Four Mile Bay is also holding some nice walleyes as they make their way in from the lake.  Various areas on the edge of the current and channel break are good spots to begin. Up at the NW Angle... Another great week of fall fishing up at the Angle.  Walleyes are keying in on various areas with structure.  Points, neck down areas with some current and transition areas from rock to mud are good right now. Walleyes are the most sought after but in the fall, lots of muskie and crappie anglers are around as well.  Good reports on a variety of species including jumbo perch and pike as the waters cool.      Put on some warm fall clothes, make sure your camera is ready and make some incredible fall fishing memories.  There is still time to get in that last fall trip.
