All I ever fish with is Larvae. I have never caught a crappie on a crappie minnow... so I just use waxies. Even with that.. I still could only get 3 to bite... and my marcum lx 5 was lite up like a christmas tree.

What sort of jig you use for waxies Big A ive put em down there but they just wont hit em but when i put a minnow down they just slam em i cant get my line down sometimes? Hey is anybody fishing little lake lately id like to try it one of these days but guess im just to lazy to go any further than Crane.

Small.. just enough to get their attention and have the waxie flipping around on the end of the hook.

Or a reg treble hook jig with two waxies on it.

I have had success with both.

I often wonder how the guys with minnows do it.. maybe I just dont have the right presentation in my tackle box of tricks.

thinkin bout a late night trip out to west yet tonight. This is my great "eye" time, but not on the menu tonight. Maybe catch a midnight bite out by crane. Safe enough to drive full size from access to crane I would think. Anyone think otherwise? Fist time out there this year, and might save me some miles if the lake isn't right for my yet. Thanks

I am new to fishing with a vexlar (got a used fl8 last February and used it). This year I am having problems on Rush with lots of (mostly) green lighting up the entire column. I am having a harder time finding my jig, although I know I have marked some fish and watched them come up to my jig when I find it. I noticed a lot of crud in the water, especially early on and was wondering if I might be marking that. Anyone else having the same problem on Rush or other lakes. No problem on Lory. Thanks

Thanks Big A ill try that! Fish system the bite for walleyes isnt that good right now on west but you gotta ask around though dont just rely on a couple people i mean weve ran into our limit 2 days this year but the bite is on and off due to my expierience but i havent heard much being caught at night more in the early morning though around 4:30 to 5:30. If you are planning to come though look to east there doing really good from the pictures ive seen on the north end though. And Mnfisher I too had the same trouble make sre your battery is fully charged and nothings on the bottom of the transducer but some of the green is from the stuff in the water too i just turn my gain down though

Yes, the Point on the north end of East is good, I got a few good spots on West too. Never see anyone else there, and I usualy go late after the crowds are done leavin or comming out. I like to drill the holes near dark, and go back and set up a little later...like 10pm or so. Thanks for the info on the current bite activity though. Never hurts to hear updates. If I get some activity worth mentioning, I will. No locations though, keepin it quiet. Good luck to all and be safe.

Are people driving everywhere on East and West yet? I was up a week ago on East and there were full size truks driving out from Flickabirds to the deep hole however, there was only 11 inches of good ice. Thought I might head up in the A.M. and give it a shot. How much ice is there actually?

Thanks MN Angler

Just saw this on the rush point store website...

1-9-10.. The sirens and ambulance, deputies were called today south of Wilson for a death on the ice. No cause is known at this time, it was not an ice condition or accident. We do not know the specifics, but many are asking what happened out there. A resident noticed a truck running all night on the ice, and had someone run out to check it in the morning, only to find someone had passed away in the vehicle.

I was up there yesterday and heard those sirens.

Fishing was very slow. We had 16 inches of ice near Wilson island. Trucks and car everywhere.

I was out Friday about 5pm and set up and brought home 8 crappies over 9", and Saturday I set up about 3pm and stayed until 8 and got 3 nice size gills and 5 nice crappies. Bite was on the "weird" side compaired to past years, but still managed to get fish on the ice. I have tried a few spots this year new to me with out much luck so I went back to the spots I have had success in the past since the boy child has been itching for a crappie fry.

I was out Sat on the north side of Wilson and the fish were stacked also. But they weren't biting on Sat. Two of us managed to catch 13 fish ( keeping 8 ) in 8 hrs. They just were not biting, very lite bite. Would not take waxies, only small crappie minnows. Fish would follow bait up, but would not bite. Very slow day!

Not alot to report from Wed. Evening. Not from me anyways. only got 3 crappies from east of Crane island in 30 ft. lots of fish near the bottom and as usual, the ones near the bottom are least active. 1 put back, 2 wouldn't make it, so I gave them (and a jump start) to a group near me. Read 3 marks in my shallow walleye spot but no bites. They were some nice marks too. They usualy are though in 10 ft or less. Roads are fine, snow isn't deep. NO SLUSH YET. Shouldn't get stuck w/o 4x4. I was in 2 wheel all night, no problem. Maybe again at end of the month. Gotta get ready....workin 7 days strt (12 hr shift) startin Thursday night. Bummer.

We gave it a shot last night and it was very slow. Managed to catch 1 small walleye, a few small perch, and 1 small crappie. We tried a couple spots the fish were there but we couldn't find anything to make them bite.

I've done my part to lower the lake level by pressure washing my dock all the way up to my upper deck. I figure that lowered Vermilion by at least 1/4" lake-wide....

On the south end...   This week was a great week of walleye fishing on Lake of the Woods.  In addition, saugers, jumbo perch, some monster pike and an occasional crappie in the mix!     There are three fishing techniques being used to score Lake of the Woods gold (walleyes).  First, drifting or slow trolling crawler harnesses.  In a nutshell, using about a 2 ounce weight and a 3-4 foot harness with a spinner, two hooks and a crawler.     A tip for crawler harnesses, hook the dark part or head of the crawler on the front hook.  Try to keep the crawler straight between the two hooks.  Try to leave a few inches of crawler off of your last hook and pinch off the rest.  The walleyes and saugers will still hit it, but you will create more hookups.   The second presentation is a jig and minnow or frozen emerald shiner.  Basically locate fish out on the mud or on structure, anchor up and jig.  If you are amongst fish, they will find you.     The third way walleyes are being caught, and some may be surprised about, is trolling crankbaits.  Some have put on the trolling gear when the walleyes weren't as cooperative or when the fish are spread out.  Lots of success catching good numbers of walleyes and good sized fish.     Lots of fish out over deep mud or deep structure.  The deep mud is holding a lot of walleyes in 21' - 27'.  Electronics will help you mark fish.     There is another shallow water bite still taking place anywhere from 5 - 17'.  Much of the shallow bite has to do with feeding opportunities on various minnow spawns, crawfish and hatches.  Not every walleye is targeting the same prey.  Lots of opportunities.  .   Gold, orange, chartreuse, glow and pink, or a combo of these colors, are a great place to start.   Anglers can keep a combined limit of 6 walleyes and saugers.  Up to 4 can be walleyes.  All walleyes 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28 inches may be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one day's possession.  If you catch a limit, eat some fish and freeze a couple, make sure to count your remaining fish left over for your possession.   On the Rainy River...  With some rain in the area, the river was flowing with a strong current and some debris this past week.  Debris has slowed considerably and water clarity is starting to improve.     Water clarity is important for walleyes, saugers, pike and smallmouth bass.  Sturgeon are much more dialed into scent to find their next meal, consequently, when the sturgeon season opens again on July 1st for the keep season, things should be good.   The fishing happening on the river is focused in areas just out of the current.  Most fish will hang just off, able to grab a passing meal but not having to expend too much energy.  Current can be good as it focuses fish in areas.   Jigging with a minnow is effective when you are on fish.  Otherwise, pulling spinners and trolling crankbaits along shoreline breaks against the current in 6 - 12' of water is producing a mixed bag of walleyes, saugers, pike, smallmouth bass and an occasional crappie.  Up at the NW Angle...  Fishing for a variety of species has been excellent and is in full summer swing up at the Angle.   For those fishing out of the NW Angle, both the Minnesota and Ontario waters of Lake of the Woods are producing a number of nice walleyes.  Many fish have slid off onto deeper structure.  With that said, there are so many areas of forage on LOW, walleyes will be in numerous spots, some shallow and some deeper, taking advantage of opportunities.  Lots of fish to be had, just go fishing.   Jigging structure has been effective.  When fish are a bit spread out, pulling spinners with crawlers or trolling crankbaits is catching a lot of fish.     In this part of the lake, expect to catch walleyes, saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, pike and smallmouth bass.   Muskie anglers are after it and reporting good numbers, and in true LOW style, some big fish over the 50 inch mark.  Summer patterns are starting to take hold, but fish are holding in a variety of areas still.

We got .5” last night. Hasn’t affected the lake level yet. It’s been steady the past three days here (Frazer Bay). RLG

Water Levels I believe are now at a record high with all the rain last week, and more fell last night.  I hope it stops raining soon for all the people who have businesses and live in the area.  Water can do so much damage.

MarkB, Where did you find the perch?  I would love to get into some of those.  MarkB are you fishing more on the east or west end?

Where are the water temps now with all the rain?  Coming up for a week on Friday and want to see what I can find out.  I have had a very poor fishing so far this year.  New to the area and just can't figure it out.  Home is on the west end of big bay.
