Matty are you still using that ruler that measures each inch as 2 inches grin Great fish! Any pics? How have the skis been biting for you?

Yup! No pics. It was raining cat and dog. Didn't want to damage my precious camera nor iPhone.

I hate muskies!

  • 4 weeks later...

So I've caught the muskie bug pretty bad and since I don't have much free time to hit Mille Lacs or Vermilion, I'm stuck fishing closer to home...

I have read and heard that East and West Rush are no good for muskie fishing this time of year because of the algae bloom. Is there any truth to that or is one of the two still worth a try from now until the end of August?

Thanks for any help and if it's worth it for me to throw for some muskies I'll post a report after I go!

Good luck out there!

I used to fish it quite a bit, and we caught muskies in the green soup. I haven't been there lately but the lakes seem to be less green than 7-8 years ago. Don't know why that might be, but I would fish it if I was you. I was just thinking of heading there the next chance I get.

Tried Rush out tonight, both East and West. I was surprised that there wasn't more boat traffic out there; I was expecting it to be packed but there was plenty of room for everyone.

I ended up only gettting one hit from a mid to high 30's muskie on a weed point and other than that no bites or follows. Still a good night to be out for 'skies. I think I'll hit it a few more times to try and catch one before it's back to school.

Good luck out there!

11-27-2010 Ice watch 2010! Ice from shore to shore in front of our house at least. Reports of people going out on 3" of ice in the bays..some out in the north park...If you are going out, please be super careful, we report it, don't necessarily condone it!

Anybody ventured out there yet? We're thinking about trying tomorrow.

Yeah I just called rushpoint he said they have a good 4" in the bays but he didn't have a report from the main part of the lake yet.But it was cold last night and will be the next couple so hopefully this weekend we can get on the main lake.

I went out on the bay off Patterson (Dennis Fransden Park) this morning. 6" ice but no fish. Thought I'd check out in front of the West public landing and walked out to where someone had been fishing maybe yesterday and poked a whole! Only about 2". I left! Best to wait a few days, I guess.

Went out yesterday and we were the first ones to walk out to cigar, but there was 5" all the way out and about 4" past the tip of cigar.Fishin was pretty slow though.

How much of that was good ice though? If a guy could set up in 8fow on SE Cigar, them eyes are in that shallow spot at primetime. No noise and minimum light is key. Every year baby!

There was maybe an inch of white ice on top,the other 4" was good

Cool. I may be out there first part of the week. If you see me up by cigar (shallow), come say hi... just do it quietly.

Just got back from fishing this morning on West Rush. Caught plenty of small crappies and was able to get a few nice ones for the frying pan. The ice was not as thick as I thought it was going to be, we found anywhere from 4 - 7 inches with some of that being the bad white ice on top. It was pretty quiet out there today but I am willing to bet this weekend will be wild.

Went out last night and found 7" out by cigar and 5"-6" by wilson.Didn't catch a thing though. But I see people are already starting to leave their garbage on the ice

Think I am gonna leave here in a half hour and head up to Cigar Island. My spot I was gonna hit on Buffalo lake is getting a crowd, and now I guess that someone drove out a car on 8 inches and parked next to a guy in his icehouse this morning. Man the nerve!

Well I got home around 10pm. Fished Cigar for about 4 hrs. Lost my first fish about 3 ft up, then got a 13" and a 15" walleye, a double wammy (2 fish..same time). Lost a hog eye at the bottom of the ice, which was about 5-6" c lear with another 2" of re-freeze. I was in 20fow, but only about 25 feet from the shore of cigar. Few other portables near me, limited success. They all left at prime though. Left after 8pm due to the lack of fish and warmth. Only brought the tiny heater because I walked out from the access, and didn't want to drag the extra weight. I saw about 20 houses on the hole. don't think anyone was still out there at 8:30 on my walk back. Hmmm... eyes were aggressive while they where below me. Hit hard and fast. Well, my legs hurt, so goodnight.

I heared there was a pick up out on East yesterday. eek

Confirmed.

Seen three vehicles, one towing a home made camper/fish house on E. Rush at 3:30 Wednesday.

They where out there a good 1/4 mile from Flickabirds.

Wheelers are going out from public landing on W. Rush. One car parked on the ice near shore..

Went out last Friday. About seven inches of ice where we were. Start at the deep hole out in front of the west public launch. Not much happening, so move to twenty five feet of water and found some crappies had to sort through though largest fish about twelve inches. Move to the point by the island towards the evening to fish for the elusive wallys, nothing....

I saw a small car out there today. I wouldn't even think about driving out yet. The ice was about 7" in the thickest part. There is slush in the areas that are not packed down. There are plenty of nice "roads" that people have plowed with ATV's that make walking nice.

was out there two days ago and saw a small car drive out to a permanent but as previously stated I only found 6-9 inches of ice were we fished just south of cigar in the hole. Caught a couple dozen crappies from noon-4:30 with crappie minnows but nothing of size 9.5 was the biggest. The bite slowed way down for us when the sun went down which is strange because I usually do the best after dark, possibly because we didn't have a zoo all over the place yet.

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.
