Lake Superior Fishing reports.

Recommended Posts

Late Posting this, but we went out on the 24th and managed to land my daughter her 1st King outside of the Harbor in Two Harbors. 5 lbs. Was a nice 1st catch for her. And then the fog rolled in. Going to get out again real soon.

Got out for a late afternoon fish yesterday. Had the whole family aboard. I am happy to say that my problems with the 90 horse Johnson had been discovered and fixed (Surface Tension IS the man). She ran flawlessly which is such good news because we have been trying to solve the mystery of why for so long now. Anyways, one small laker is all we got. My daughter got to reel it in which was a huge thrill for her. Fished three miles out on the line. Surface temperatures ranged from 57 to 54 degrees. Very few marks on the graph. Pulled the pin after two and a half hours then went in the river for a ride. Fun day. Just started our vacation and most definetly will be back out soon. BC

Mark good to see you got it going. Finny what a hose can or cant do. Now that you got it going get back out there. By the way keep your ears open I am looking for a set of elec riggers.

Yeah, two little missing hose clamps caused us two good years of missed fishing on Superior. Unreal. I would have never thought. Frank sure knows what he's doing. I will keep my eyes and ears open for some riggers. Get my number from Rob or Frank. I might know where you can find some. Going to the dance? BC

Speaking of cold the pond was COLD today. 44 degrees out the entry and the most we found was 54. Thats CHILLY.

Got out for about 3 hours last night and found the water very cold every place I went. The farther south I went the warmer it got but the warmest I found was almost 56 degrees.

Fishing was SLOW but a few Lakers and eyes were caught but nothing of size. Did lose a couple very heavy fish that fealt like lakers.

I make it. I work to fish. No kids helps too. As does a very understanding wife who doesnt need me by her side every second of the day to feel good about herself. wink

I dont care what anyone does with their time! I am just tryin to figure out how people do it (fish all the time).

Lets add this up: 7 Hrs Sleep 8 Hrs Work 2 Hrs Shower/Eat 1 Hr Travel = 18 Hrs if everything works that way, and it usually does not work that way for me. This plan would allow a person to fish for 6 Hrs each day but would leave no room for wife, shopping, friends, tv, couch, mowing lawn, reading, pets, beers, ect.

Northlander I am envious (if i even know how to spell that word) Ha Ha

looks like you got it figured out just right... no shopping couch tv ect.ect.. and you can fish everyday 6 hours!

I dont sleep much when Im on a fishing spree and I eat in the boat. I work shift work so I go before or after work and my lawn gets mowed in 1/2 hour. Like I said my wife dont need to be at my hip all the time. Thats what nights are for. wink

I also work a job where I get a ton of time off so that really helps.

Just went through a tank of gas in 2 days running around on Lake Superior. Then fished league tonight. Im very tired but will get up early and fish probably. Then come home take a quick nap and go to work. I dont do much any more but work, fish, eat, sleep and chores. Oh and FM.

Its a tuff life but Im just the guy to do it. grin

Walleyehunter you've also got to take into consideration that we live in a part of the state were you might cut your lawn 12 times a year. Being from the cities you might do that twice a week, I know I lived there. Also 2hrs for showering? Good luck! wink

So I went solo yesterday. First time ever on Superior and it was a little nerve wracking. Turned out to be flat after the huge Western blow in the a.m. Surface Tension bailed on me so seeing how the 90 is performing well I had to get out on the pond. Lines down at 5:30 a.m. and fished until 11:30. Worked the Mcquade area, French, pump house. Water was a cool 43 to start with and ended up 50 after the sun beat down hard. Marked very few fish. I found two large bug slicks thanks to the gulls and worked them hard. Nothing. Never saw a coho or other fish for that matter breach the surface for all those bugs. Warden checked me. There were lot's of boats out and he had told me only one boat had gotten two lakers and that was early. My point is the water North of here is crazy cold for this time of year and the fishing is hard to say the least. Not one bump in six hours. BC

Shower? Isnt that why boats have live wells? grin

Mark it seems all the warmer water is on the cheesey side. Well if ya call 54-56 degree surface temps warm. Its a crazy summer thats for sure.

Just think, if we get a cold enough winter we can almost guarantee the lake freezing up good for some solid ice fishing. Well, maybe! wink

Got out with my daughter yesterday, trolled the line about 5-7 miles off superior entry, took 1 22" laker at 40' in 85 fow black/green/glowgreen spoon, and 1 22" on a deep diving clown x-rap. Absolutely beautiful morning after the early breeze subsided. Had 54-56 degree water there.

My brother went out off Two Harbors yesterday, water was mid 40's and all he took home was a skunk :P

My son is going to start school and has moved to Duluth for the year. We are going up to visit for the weekend. Any tips on spots from shore or gear needed to catch anything ? Smallies ? Walleyes? Are trout or salmon accessible from shore at this time of year ?

Smallies on the upper St. Louis River above the 23 bridge and the park. Slip bobber and leech or some top waters. Can be a every cast deal when they are going good.

Going to be staying up at Tettegouche State Park with the girlfriend for a couple of days next week...any help for any fishing from shore areas would be appreciated! I really have no idea about the area so any rivers or tactics would help. Thanks.

If you are willing to share, what depth do you usually find the walleyes at on superior, On the line I assume? trolling crainkbaits?

Thanks again northlander . We went to the park at fond du lac. Looks like a nice spot. We did not fish very long cause it started storming. I caught 1 smallie and he got 2. Talked to some locals that made it sound like it can be better at times. At least my son has a spot he can fish close to school. Sunday we went up and down the shore at a few river mouths and McQuade access. Nothing ! Still felt good to be casting in the big lake. Giving help is what I think these sites should be about !

Hey government,  Just give us choices. I don’t care what people use as long as as it works for you. I’m needing a new weed eater. Plan on a Stihl FS 40 easy start. I’m done with the cheaper brands. Just don’t last long enough.  Probably true with the Stormy Daniels of the world as well. Cheaper don’t last long enough 🤭

If you turn on a movie they survive the 20min ride just fine. After many controlled experiments, I've found that they survive much better if you show "Finding Nemo" instead of "Jaws."

Quick update: Lucky 7 now has rainbows, fatheads, crappie and light pike in stock. If I remember correctly, scoop of rainbows was $8.99.  Stopped at L&M in Virginia. Rainbows $6.99, fatheads and crappie minnows (scoop) $3.99. I was billed $6.99 dozen for rainbows, but was given a healthy scoop!

I have had the same old Strikemaster augers for years, take care of them and they will last a long time.   I think E-augers are nice for around home lakes or at the cabin. The thing that was a eye opener to me was being in D-Rock in New Brighton getting new blades and there were two guys that just got back from a week in Canada on a big ice fishing trip and both very pissed off at their e-augers dying! They were both buying new gas augers.

On the south end...   Things are shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener which takes place Saturday, May 11th.  Recent rain has brought up the water levels, which were low.  The walleyes and saugers are in very good shape across the south shore.  Expectations are high. The goto presentation this weekend will be a jig and frozen emerald shiner or other kind of minnow.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.     Hook the shiner through the mouth and out the gill.  Push the minnow all the way up to the jig head and hook the minnow as far back as possible.  This will give you a better hooking percentage.     Jig sizes and colors?  This is stained water so you can get away with a big heavier jig, which is nice for those who don't fish a lot.  It enables them to have more control and feel the bottom.  A quarter ounce jig is a good size for starters.     In stained water, gold, glow white, glow red, pink, orange and chartreuse, or a combo of those colors, are great places to start.   The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there will be some good pike caught this weekend.  The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season is May 8 - 15.  The keep season starts up again July 1st. FYI, there will be some nice walleyes in the Rainy River for the fishing opener.  Lots of sturgeon anglers are reporting big walleyes being caught on sturgeon rigs! Up at the NW Angle...  Angle resorts are ready to roll for the opener.  As many of you know, this is the area of LOW where the islands begin.  Lots of structure.     Go to spots for walleyes, neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays which will have warmer water.  In true NW Angle form, be ready for a mixed bag of fish.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, and even a few smallies and muskies will be caught.   Again, the goto presentation will be a jig and minnow. Slow trolling a crankbait will also produce fish if need be.

Totally disagree Gim. I have a gas Jiffy legend auger. Never issues. Take a little time to care for it before putting it away and good to go. Sincei started using non oxygen gas, startron and seafood in never have issues with my 2 strokes.   seafood???   I'd try seafoam!!!   🤣
