at worest he can help with the read option during drills

Bingo! They open the season against the 49'ers, do the math. If Rogers goes down, it doesn't matter who the backup QB is, they aren't winning the Superbowl.

Yep... I'll take an out of the league two time pro bowler / rookie of the year vs. Graham Harrell in a back up roll. Not expecting that they would be a bowl contender, but at least you can probably be able to stomach through watching the game....

Now we gotta get lucky and find at least a serviceable lineman to fill in for the oft injured Bulaga. Hate to say it... but bye-bye Brian! This will now make 27 games missed in three seasons... there is no upside to keeping a guy like that around no matter what the talent level or how badly he is needed to fill that spot on a roster.

Good Luck!

They keep piling up:

Quote:
The Packers just wrapped up practice, and coach Mike McCarthy told reporters that wide receiver Jordy Nelson would miss the rest of training camp after having knee surgery.

Quote:

This comes after wide receiver Randall Cobb left practice today with what McCarthy referred to as a biceps injury.

luckily it looks as though Nelson has a shot at making it back for the opener.... The surgery was to repair some nerve damage, not physical damage to the knee. Dr.s are reporting 4-6 weeks recovery. Opener is just over 4 weeks away.

Let's hope Cobb just has a boo-boo...

Good Luck!

now they are reporting Bulaga is gettting a second opinion and would like to play through the tear. Word is he finished the scrimmage and did not even realize he had torn it... McCarthy and Bulaga are metting with another round of Drs to see their opion on the matter. Word is suppose to be out this afternoon of their findings.

Good Luck!

Having had one i would certainly get it fixed and make sure it is right before playing again. If it is only a partial it may heal back but if it is stressed before healing it can tear the rest of the way.

but if he wants to I guess it is his choice.

Bakhtari has been a beast throughout training camp, barely getting beat in the 1-on-1 drills. I'm not fan of starting rookies, especially at left tackle. However, he seems to be showing more promise on the O-line than we've seen in a while. The real question will be whether he can hold up the entire season and into the playoffs.

My bet is that Barclay nails down the RG spot with Newhouse and VanRoten as the backups. Newhouse backs up at LT. VanRoten at guard. Barclay is learning center and knows guard so he can bounce around if necessary.

It's nice knowing that picking [Vince Young] up as a back up- he's still better than MN's starter.

Ahhhhh I love it. Not even a full week into August and the crazy is coming strong. It's going to be a fun season!

That really isnt saying much. Hell, our back up is better then our starter wink

Thats why he sat out all last year and no one picked him up (Young)?

I am not a Ponder apologist, but he was afforded the luxury of sitting behind one of the NFL's all time greats before being forced to start, I think we would be looking at this completely differently. He got to wait 3 years before being forced to start.

I think things could be different for Ponder if he were able to learn for 3 years before starting. Any QB would.

I disagree....strongly. 2c

I guess you cannot rewrite history, but to think Ponder wouldnt have benefitted by sitting behind someone like Favre (like Rodgers did) for 3 years is assinine at best.

As a comparo, look at Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers in comparison. Smith has largely struggled his entire career, resurrecting it a bit with Harbaugh, but have being thrust into the starting role from day one he was overmatched. Smith, as a top pic should have been ready, right? Rodgers plummeted in the draft, far below where "experts" thought he would be picked. Why? Anyone's guess, maybe everyone but GB was wrong and they had it right, but I do not for one second think that Aaron Rodgers would have performed markedly better in his first 3 years in the league than what Ponder is doing in his first 3. Manning? Same scenario, he was terrible at first. He will go into the record books as one of the all time greats, but it didnt start out that way. There are FAR more busts at QB than ones that excel, but those who arent thrown to the wolves right out of college tend to do better than those who are down the road (beyond year 3). This year is big for Ponder. I am not trying to take anything away from Rodgers, because he is an excellent QB, but I think he would have faired about the same as many others had he been forced to start from day 1.

Now back to your regularly scheduled Packer talk.

Back to the schedualed packer talk after I get this off my chest. Dont even bother comparing Ponder and Alex smith to Rodgers abilities, thrown to the wolves right away or not. Its not even close. There have been plenty of QBs starting there first year that have done fine, Andrew Luck, RG3, Russel Wilson, Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, pretty sure Cam Newton did ok his first year too.

This is a huge year for Ponder. Do I see him doing well? No, but thats just my opinion.

Why not? At least with Smith and Rodgers, most of the football world felt that they were pretty much equal coming out of college. Therefore it's a reasonable conclusion that something happened to each player that influenced their football fates. There are too many variables to just pick one, but I have no doubt in my mind that Rodgers is better for having learned the good and the bad from Favre.

As for the whole Ponder vs Young debate...kind of pointless. Young won't start for GB unless there is an injury, or series of injuries. With the way he's throwing interceptions in training camp he may not even make the first cut-down. Ponder is on notice as well. The Vikings can eat his contract after this season if he doesn't improve.

Back to actually talking about the Packers, Bakhtari is looking awesome at LT so far. It will be good to see how he holds up in his first PS game this Friday.

For those who may not be close enough to the WI border to get the radio signal for games, WTMJ announced that they will live stream Packer games plus the pre- and post-game shows on their website. So if you want to hear Wayne Larrivee and Larry McCarren, cruise over to the WTMJ website on Friday night an hour or two before kickoff.

Skunked at least you get it.

BTW what was with all the fights at practice? Gotta love the intensity!

JosMN, there is an NFL scouting position open at at least 1 of the 32 teams in the NFL. You appear quite knowledgeable at scouting. After all for every cam newton there were 10 brady quin, jamarcus russell, etc etc etc.

Sure, he may have picked up a thing or two, but to believe that would have been the difference in Ponder becoming the Vikings' franchise QB or not is pure speculation on your part.

The theory of "sitting behind a veteran QB" has become a overused excuse by Vikings rubes due to the team's inability to draft a quality QB and living on the has-been QB waiver wire. I mean, how long has this team been developing their "QB of the future" now? LOL.

Your argument of drafting a franchise qb holds no water since favre wasn't drafted by GB. Its not easy to draft one. Especially with top pics as they've proved to be a waste by the numbers. There are probably 26 of the 32 teams who have never drafted a franchise qb. That isn't necessarily an issue if the pluck them from elsewhere is Steve young.

All I know is this....Ponder should not be used in any type of what if, what that, sitting behind someone for three years. Blah blah blah. He is not a franchise QB like manning, rodgers, Brady, etc. Just think of the numbers Rodgers would have if he wasn't on his back half the time? He will be cut or benched after this season. Heck, he is a Brady quin, you all are just still "trying" to develop him. There's my recruitment knowledge for ya.

Like I said, there is at least ONE scouting position open for you. Question, how many "franchise" qb's are in the NFL today? How many of those were drafted by who they are currently with? OK that's two but that should keep you busy. Can you get past 3 for the second question? Lol

Rumor is the Hall of Fame is under budget this year so they are carving out the bust of Tim Tebow now instead of waiting for his induction year, figuring that his time "sitting behind a veteran QB" like Tom Brady makes him an automatic first year lock to get in.

BTW, who did Favre get his FB knowledge from? The Magic Man?

ROFL.

Matt Ryan, Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Andy Dalton, Andrew Luck, RG3, Russel Wilson, Matt Staford, Sam Bradford, Joe Flacco, Cam Newton......does Eli Manning count? LMAO. Peyton was on the colts for like 65 years...does he count too?

Well there's a few for ya...I'm done.

Half of those are unproven with only one or two seasons under their belt. BOOM? More like a pop from a cap gun. The funniest part is you ask if eli counts when he has won two superbowls and a SB MVP yet you include Bradford, Stafford who haven't done squat.

Even more funny is you ask me why I was asking if Eli counted, because he wasn't "drafted" by the Giants...

Havent done squat? They are their teams franchise QB. Thats what you were asking. Two seasons or not, none of those guys are on the hot seat like Ponder.

Fact of the matter is I answered your question, with like 10 or more guys and you wanted 3......so?

BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM........BOOOOOOM.

Now back to talking about our team in this thread, the PACKERS. Go away with your ridiculous coments and pm me with your Paul Allen superbowl thoughts.

You're right Clay Mathews isn't known for beating O-linemen and getting to the qb....only 5th in sack totals from last season out of the entire NFL

Went in to Lucky 7 to get some crappie minnows today. All they had were crappie minnows and fatheads. She said to call in advance for the opener, couldn't say for sure if they'd have rainbows, shiners, etc for opener!
    • SkunkedAgain
I hope to see it and believe it next week! Nice looking crappie

Been out couple times this last week. Between the rain and wind there really was only one day this past week where it was actually warm out fishing.  Water temps are low mid 50s yet, not much change from last week.  Fish are still holding out off the first break on some area lakes and right up in the boat channels and back bays of others.   Been keeping it pretty simple as far as tackle used. Having the best luck with the lil hustler tubes under a small float or throwing the Bobby Garland baby shads with a 1/32 jig head.  The Bobby's have definitely been my big fish catcher this spring.
    • imhatz
The water looks low but appears to be on the rise. We will be there  the week after opener. I have been going since 1981 and enjoying the experience. We love the variety of fish we catch and release each year. Ice went out a bit earlier than in years past. Water may be warmer and plan to target some crappies. We fish predominately in Sand Point as we camp. Good luck all and tight lines. We may consider the hike to Lake Lucille which we did 2 years ago.

thats great to hear regarding the lake levels!!!!!!

On an off light precipitation today. Hoping the weather this weekend will be nice so I can get out and crappie fish and check the weather. My yard has standing water and the driveway is a mess. Lot of lakes are near standard water levels which is good. Heard they are done stripping eggs on cut foot. Shaping up to be a good opener. Last year fished open water 60+ days and 28 different lakes. Hopefully bump both those numbers up this year
    • rundrave
I don't think its 100% accurate, you are just relying on other average joes to report precipitation. But I think most numbers there are right in the ball park, especially when you see consistency among multiple reports in a general area.   It's probably more accurate than what the weather terrorists say on the news  which usually only reports metro areas. cocorahs is good for getting rural area reports you just might not have as many reports to go off of
