Ice Reports

Thanks for the words of wisdom, Gentlemen... But I'm pretty sure I know what i'm doing, and I'm pretty darn certain you haven't seen the ice I'll be fishing on.

Hey Jim this was your response to me a little over a week ago under my "couple more days driving out thread", I'm glad you've come to your senses. Lol

Well put Mike. I like the people who do not fish this time of year, more ice for you and I.

Jigginjim, I myself have taken a couple swims this time of year. Each time that it has happened I learned something valuable. So if you are scared to fish anymore this year thats not my fault.

I'm with you Duckman, do your home work, know where you are going, and procede with caution. I am NOT advocating going out in the middle of the lake, but as you and I and Mike know there are places to fish very close to shore. Possibly a cold dip but life threatening, hardly. See you out there tomorrow.

I am still fishing a lake that has ice to the shore, over three feet of ice, and still seeing four wheelers trackin the lake! You can still fish lakes safely. The bite is on and I am taking advantage of it. Use caution and just dont go trampsing around blind like some fool. Make sure you do some research. Like others I have gone threw the ice, more than once by the way, and have learned a few helpful tips. Sometimes even on the best of ice, a person can not see springs or current. All season we need to use caution. With all the resources we have, we shouldnt hear about people going threw, but we do and will continue to hear about it for a long, long time.

I'm hoping to get out on Saturday afternoon.

Anybody know what the ice is like on any of the following lakes?

Buffalo

Pelican

Beebe

Charlotte

My guess would be that Buffalo has the best conditions...although I nearly got skunked out there a couple weeks ago. Had a cyclone of water pouring in my hole w/ 2 inches of water on top of the ice.

I want to hit something local w/ my bro-in-law after a family gathering.

Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Drove by maple lake today, no open water that I could see, but it looked very bad along the shorelines. The top of the ice looked pretty crappy too, but I'm sure once you get past the top few inches it's still pretty thick. Nobody out there, use extreme caution along the shoreline.

Mike, Duckman, and Gadgetman- Good Luck I would be out there two- But where I have permission to get on- the road and yard is kind-of soft, Don't want the home owner to having any yard or drive way problems because I needed to fish.

If you are worried about the local ice...which is probably a pretty good way to be this time of year, just head north.

I was on Spurzum last week and that ice looked pretty crappy, upper portion came up like ice cubes, about 3-4 inches at the bottom looked pretty solid. I figured it would be done in a day or two of above freezing weather....maybe not done, but to funky for me to take a chance on it.

But, but, today (And yesterday) we were on Mille Lacs and although I didn't measure it, just going by the auger bit, I'd say there is still at least 25 inches of good ice. Wheelers everywhere, mine included! smile

Drove by Lake Ida and Eagle around Monti here, both lakes looked pretty honeycombed. The edges were out anywhere from 4-15 feet. It doesn't look like it's gonna be out before this weekend, but we can only hope.

Fished Maple on Saturday... ice was in pretty decent shape yet - 16" or so but very rough on top. Bring cleats. Fishing was pretty poor- drilled around 20 holes and we caught a combined 15 sunfish... all on the small side. A little thin ice to break through along shore but the main ice sheet is still in good shape on the south shore. If I wasn't leaving for NE Tuesday I'd still be venturing out searching for some eaters. Good luck if you make it out and be safe.

I haven't even looked at my boat yet, still to much ice fishing left for me to even think about the boat. I was out this morning, still a couple 4 wheelers out. If I could get mine on at my cabin I would run mine on it too.

Looks like your timing will be better than ours. Hopefully the birds will be active tomorrow after being holed up in cover with the storm today. A report will follow, don't worry.

Hey folks I'm looking to fish on Tues and/or Wed. Would like to know if there are some lakes I can access. I assume it would be smaller lakes, let me know! I promise I'll post my annual "it was great to get out but I couldn't find the fish in such cold water" whiny excuse.

Was out this AM got a nice bunch of sunnies the ice is firm but poor , average 12" I'd say , but when you drill new holes some chunks come up as big as yer fist . Id say soon as it warms up again and gets soft it will be done for sure !!!

eagle lake just north of big lake is open, the ice on big and mitchel looks to be going fast, you may be able to fish it this weekend, but thats it.

I was at the briggs chain today, tryed the channel that goes under 16, nothing happening, we need some more sun to warm the water. the lakes are about 50 percent open.

I think electric items have their places, I just don't think large commercial jobs are going to be able to work well with them. Can't see a logging crew out in the woods all day changing batteries!
    • gimruis
I agree on the choices.   I didn't mean to say that a battery auger was better or greener or whatever.  I could care less about that.   It just seems that "most" ice anglers have made a switch to a battery auger in recent years.  That's all I was saying.  I know about a dozen people who regularly ice fish and they all have battery augers now.  I bet if you conducted a survey of all ice anglers, the majority would answer that they use a battery powered auger.

Best weed eater I've ever run with great longevity is Echo, I'd check them out

Hey government,  Just give us choices. I don’t care what people use as long as as it works for you. I’m needing a new weed eater. Plan on a Stihl FS 40 easy start. I’m done with the cheaper brands. Just don’t last long enough.  Probably true with the Stormy Daniels of the world as well. Cheaper don’t last long enough 🤭

If you turn on a movie they survive the 20min ride just fine. After many controlled experiments, I've found that they survive much better if you show "Finding Nemo" instead of "Jaws."

Quick update: Lucky 7 now has rainbows, fatheads, crappie and light pike in stock. If I remember correctly, scoop of rainbows was $8.99.  Stopped at L&M in Virginia. Rainbows $6.99, fatheads and crappie minnows (scoop) $3.99. I was billed $6.99 dozen for rainbows, but was given a healthy scoop!
