Air Rifles

Recommended Posts

I wasn't thinking about people or using it "bad", but if I can't use a bb gun in the city on squirrels, but I can use paintball gun and not get in trouble, I might just smack a few squirrels (not to kill them, but to give them a fright to stay out of my stuff)... or just to thwack a few targets out back while wasting time.

I just thought it would be same as firing bb gun at empty cans... maybe not though. I do know a retired WBL cop, maybe I should give him a shout... though it really doesn't matter muc to me, as I prolly would not dump the bucks just to tag a stupid squirrel wink

Can anyone recommend a place nearby the Metro Area where a person can take their air rifle to sight in the scope since you cannot shoot them in city limits.  Plus, probably not smart to just pull up to a random field to sight in, either.  Thanks!!

New here, first post!

I recently moved from a small town out to a rural area.  There's a lot of striped gophers out here!  Naturally, I went right out and bought a .22 break barrel pellet gun, .17 pump and BB CO2 pistol.  Now, I'm shooting like 45-75 yards, so I'm around 1/100 on hit/shot ratio.  That's ok though.  I don't want to kill them all, or my sport would be over!  Anyway,,, I'm very interested in airguns, and already have my sights on a break barrel .30 rifle!  I do hunt deer less seriously, but plan to continue using my 20 gauge for that.  My wondering (and I haven't officially looked up the regs), is whether I can go off my land and legally take small game?  I would of course have a small game license should I do it.  I just want to be sure it is legal.  Don't worry, my .22 is certainly able to kill small game, and the .30 would, I assume...  I have no real interest in PCP, despite the larger calibers sounding pretty sweet!  I'd LOVE to start a little airgun only club (in Chisago County) and do little gatherings, moreso for camaraderie.  If anyone is interested, let me know.  Looking forward to a fun airgun future, and maaaybe taking a rabbit?

Cheers,

Josh

Whell, I assume this thread is probably dead.  I bought my small game license tonight and am taking my .22 out in the woods by our cabin tomorrow.  Hoping to find some squirrels and maybe a rabbit if I'm lucky.  Not even sure quite what yardage I'm sighted for, but we'll see what happens!

Nothing like living up a thread then posting some pictures how you did.  Good luck.  ?

Idk what the laws are in Minnesota but I've always used a daisy Powerline 880 with .177 pellets to hunt squirrel in Texas and I always got them down in one shot if you can't get a head shot or a spinal shot then you shouldn't even shoot it to begin with. I was also homeless and there were no rivers anywhere near for fish so at the time do to circumstances the police didn't even bother me because it was my only source of food. Now whether or not you can legally shoot a squirrel with a Daisy Powerline 880 un Minnesota from like 100-200 feet away with decent cheap scope is beyond me. Personally I prefer sights but it doesn't matter. Either way I'd like to know cause I do wanna go hunting again.

There are some small public land pieces that allow small game hunting around. I would start on those as the bigger ones get a lot of attention. I use to hunt squirrels with my pellet gun all the time, but I stopped for some reason. This made me think about it again. You may want to check out farms as they may let you hunt squirrels there.

I have had a pile of squirrels in my back yard. They become destructive little pests by chewing the screens off the windows. House is only 3 years old. We have had up to 7 black squirrels (technically a gray).

I have a Gamo air rifle that shoots 1300 FPS with the PBA ammo but it's a springer rifle so the reverse recoil makes it difficult to keep a scope sighted in. The rifle I'd really like to have is the Daystate Red Wolf. But at $2200, it just might not happen. One of the nicest looking rifles out there, of any kind.

Last fall I decided to give the squirrels in the yard a break. The pile from the last 10 years would be very very tall lol. Yesterday I had the spectrum guy out cuz my tv would not run guide or menu or dvd upstairs. He checked everything inside and all was good. Check outside and the squirrels chewed a few spot on cable and water got into the dang thing. Thx a lot squirrels!  The war is back on as soon as I can lift my big cat by gamo. Beeman crow magnum pellet pairs perfect. I tapped in a small screw behind the front mount for the BSA pellet rifle scope and it holds it in place. BSA 4x32AO rifle scope

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.

My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.

That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better

Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.

Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other

That's good news. I haven't seen any ice in Black Bay yet, but it looks like the small bays should start to freeze up this weekend. Hopefully we make some ice next week.   Below is the forecast for Cook. We should have temps mostly below zero . The bottom section below shows that it should not be windy, and no snow is predicted. All good signs for making ice.
