Are there any other lakes around the area that are showing signs of winterkill? Afraid of a few lakes going backwards that have been showing signs of life over the last couple years.

I did not see one fisherman for a week strait. I'm guessing it is bad now, from the road the ice looks like it will open up any day. I have not seen any landings with ice, all open water. Small ponds are mostly open, even big lakes have open shore lines.

My brothers were on a southern Wright county lake on Saturday and they did not need a plank, they were able to walk down the hill and right onto the ice. The fish were biting but the size was not good.

Round Lake by Winsted?

I fished on Round by Winsted on March 29 and there were dead sunfish in the holes I opened up,did not find any live fish on the end of my line or on the Vex.

Pros / Cons

Super-Braid: strongest, no stretch / Cut easy by teeth, high visibility, expensive

Monofilament: low visibility, cheap / weaker, stretchy (may be a pro)

Fluorocarbon: very low visibility, strong, high abbrasion resistance / expensive, high memory

Braided Dacron: low stretch, it works, soft / high visibility, weakest

Guy on Maple today. This weekend's warmup should take care of it.

Take care of what? LOL... Having to wear jackets ice fishing for the next week. smile

Big Lake today, the ice hasnt hardly seperated from shore yet. Its gonna be a while unless we tip the scales in the 60's for days on end and get some wind and rain.

According to a co worker

Crappies are in 2 to 4 feet of water near weeds on Big and Mitchell Lakes.

Ice is still in good condition and the fish are shallow.

Should be a great weekend Ice fishing in tshirts.

I will be working.

I don't know if any of you remember last year, but that first week of 60+ degree weather got rid of the ice in a hurry. Now think about 5 staight days of late April sun and 60+ degree temps. Lakes will be toast in a hurry. The lakes can last longer with those temps and early March sun, but late April sun is like it was in Mid August. Lots of lakes will be opening up right around April 30-May 4.

I agree. If we are in the 60s with sun out and a warm wind the ice will go in a hurry. Seems like a lot of over reaction to if the ice will still be around come opener. Small and shallow lakes will start opening up by this Sunday if the weather man is right for the weekend.

Open water for about 40 feet before you get to ice in front of my house and down the shore in both directions where I live. Can see some gills and crappies swimming around every now and again out from under the ice. Kinda neat to see.

You must be in some sheltered bay giant1, because every lake i pass has plenty of open water. I was even thinking of shore fishing this weekend. There is a bay on cedar lake that has opened up, and hopefully the heat will bring fish into the open.

so yesterday i drilled some new holes just to check ice thickness "for the sky is falling crowd" and i found 21"s with 3 to 4" of slush on main lake and maybe 4"s less towards shore but more slush on top because of winter drifting !!! yes the end is near but the fat lady aint sung yet !! will be nice this weekend ice fishing in a Tshirt grin

I'm not doubting there is 20"+ in the middle of the lake, its the rest of the ice that scares me.

Checked the lake today i had been walking right on just a couple days ago, ice is now 30 ft from shore and only a couple inches thick at the edge on the west side of the lake. I think its safe to say its over for this area.

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.
