Annandale-Buffalo-Hutchinson fishing reports

I hear ya. Fishing was pretty finicky this weekend. Probably one of the lightest crappie bites I have ever seen. You couldn't really even feel the bite it was all by site.

Thinking of heading up to the big pond this weekend for one last go at'er. Anyone else heading up there?

I saw someone fishing on Albion tonight. Possibly a crappie bite, or just trying? It could be a lot of fun to catch rough fish like bowfin and carp through the ice.

Caught first sunny over 9 inches for this winter on Little Maple. Was 9 1/3 inches to be exact. Had to do some sorting but kept quite a few 8" as well.

I plan on taking my Godchild and her two sisters fishing after school one day next week. Buffalo Lake is closest to their home. I have an SUV; any chance I can get out anywhere on the lake after all of this snow? Would anyone be willing to point me in the direction of some fish? Strictly looking to put the girls on a few fish, any size will do. PM's would be fine if you don't want to post on here. Thanks for your help!

I went out this morning on cedar lake in 8' after perch and just nailed them on minnows from 8am to around 11am, and it was a slower steady bite from then on; I kept about 30 (2 people). I hooked hard fighting northern that took me nearly 15 minutes to get in on 4# line, an got a perch that was pushing 3/4 of a pound. I went in at 2pm for dinner and fried them up. After getting more minnows I went back out at 7pm for crappies. I was fishing in 23' but never got a single crappie, I did not even see anything suspended on the vexilar (which I now have, and love). I did get nearly 20 walleye's, the first at 9:30 pm and they completely shut off once the storm hit. A little after dark I simply put down two rattle reels, one with a glow jig, and one with a bare hook, both with a crappie minnow. They were all pretty small, the biggest was maybe 16"-17". I moved one up about 5' off the bottom for passing crappie, but it still caught walleye. Where are these things during the season!!!? I got a few hours of sleep before deciding its best to go home, just in-case the storm gets worse.

Did anyone else experience a tough bite this weekend? Fish activity seemed very limited.

I second that. I was out on a lake Northwest of Hutch and the biggest crappie I cought was about 9" but eveything I caught seemed to be very finiky.

Nice day of fishing! How big were the perch and walleye? It always seems they show up after season closes!

Slough Shark,

I've always enjoyed reading your posts, because it seems you have a good deal of knowledge of the Wright County lakes. Your latest post concerning Cedar lake struck a chord because it is one of my favorite lakes in the area. I was told the crappie population has dwindled way down, but it is still a great bass lake. We haven't found any big pigs in it, but there are plenty of 17 inchers in it. It also doesn't seem to get the pressure the other lakes do. My other favorite lakes in the area is Granite, Ramsey, and Louisa-Marie, concerning bass.

The average perch I got was your standard 5"-6" cigar. I got over 100 of those, and released them. I kept perch over about 8", but we got one that was way bigger than the rest. It was a little over 12" and about 3/4 of a pound. The walleye were also small, and very similar in size, almost all were 14"-15", one was very small, and one was 17" and fat.

Even though I live on Cedar lake, I have never had very much luck. It is a very good multi-species lake, and it has tons of structure. Granite is my favorite bass lake in the area, I got my biggest bass ever there, 6.5 pounds. No pictures, just the memory; I showed my dad who picked me up at the launch, weighed it and I released it. It seems wright county has a ton of great bass lakes, I cant think of one that doesn't have good numbers, and size. If your ever having a bad day, just try pike fishing. It seems to work great for me. grin

Not sure why the pike looks so goofy, probbably tired after 15 minutes of line tearing runs

The right walleye was 17", left was caught at the same time through the same hole when they got tangled. Obviously all were released.

here are some 8" perch with the 12" jumbo, these guys and many more made it to the frying pan.

Spent 5 hours on the ice yesterday. Weather was awesome. Got a nice sunburn. Fishing was decent. Managed some eater perch. Fun to be out when it is nice.

It appears as if Otter/Campbell froze out in Hutchinson this winter. Went by the other day, lots of dead Carp, Buffalo, Catfish, Pike, and Walleyes. Too bad since the Walleye were starting to do quite well in there.

Was out on Wednesday. Good bite for sunfish and crappies. Still about 18 inches of ice.

Was out for an hour this morning. Good crappie bite, but I think most lakes in this area will not be fishable after the rain this weekend. Get the boats ready.

Hammered the gills this morning, lots of 8-9" fish. Shallower bay, fishing plastics in 6-8 fow. Fish were anywhere from the bottom of the lake, to the bottom of the ice. Fun bite when the fish are coming from everywhere. By Monday or Tuesday the ice should be shot down here.

I know round lake south of litchfeild did. Thanks to the DNR "hoping" for warmer weather rather then opening it up to Libralized. I would have to say a lot of the lakes that aren't deeper then 10 feet are probably real close too! Cross your fingers for warm weather!

Giant1, which lakes have you been on? and how long ago? I was out on Buffalo just before we got the bigger snow fall. As that time it was walk with caution. Some of the drilled holes where growing larger day by day. If you had a little kid out there hey could sink below the ice, plus other holes started that were only a foot or so deep, caused by junk left out on ice. it would melt a hole around the junk.

It looked like maple might be the only one with any shore ice at all, any other lake has a few feet of open water.

I hear people were still getting out on Sugar. But now with this snow cover, might make things a bit more wet.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
