Annandale-Buffalo-Hutchinson fishing reports

Recommended Posts

Went out to a lake today to try for some bluegills/crappies. Tried a couple different spots of shore today. The first spot was a bust, not even a bite, but the second spot landed us about 15 or so bluegills in an hour or so. Most were in the 5-6.5 inch range, but there was some in the 7-7.5 inch range. I was fishing in some shallow mud using small green glow jigs and wax worms, or Gulp Alive green wax worms. If you have the opportunity to get out and get these shallow fish, I would think that next week should be some really good fishing with the warmer temps.

I did make it out yesterday, but sadly not much to report. I think water temps are too cold. I thought for sure the crappies would have been in the lagoon, but not yesterday. I tried a few other spots for crappies, but nothing yet. We need sun!! I have heard rumors guys have been getting a few, but it is hit 'n' miss.

Anybody else get out??

I got out on a local lake just to get the boat running for the 1st time this year. I found temps between 48 and 51 on the small lake I was on.

Went out again today to the same spot today and did well on sunfish and perch. Quite a few smaller sunfish again today, but ended up with 6-7 7-8 inch sunfish. All the perch were small. Most caught using Gulp! Alive, with a few of each on wax worms and minnows. Good luck out there any happy fishing!

Avid, I think I saw him on my way home from the lake today.

I got out but did not wet a line. I put the camera down in one of my favorite lakes looking for crappies. I did not find any but I did find plenty of bass and then I moved out deeper and found walleyes on a nice hard bottom. Lets just say that its in the gps and they have no chance in about 1 week. Can't wait.

That sounds like cheating Hester! grin Still gotta get them to bite. Good luck!

Thats my only problem. Its neat watching fish in there natural environment. The main thing I noticed is that the bass are just sitting there like a bump on a log, but the walleyes, they are constantly on the move.

I saw bowfisherman along the highway on my way to Litchfield and then some more along the road between Cedar and Belle this evening. Also couldn't believe how high the water level on most of the lakes is.

It was a slower than average opener.

We caught 12 and kept 7. All in the 13-14 inch range. Lighted bobbers and minnows.

Just woke up and thought I should check to see if you guys left any walleyes for us or if the Hutch HSO'ers got them all yesterday. 12 walleyes on such a "lovely" day, Avid, "ain't half bad." At least you got more than cold and wet on the opener.

We hope to finally get out later today. Good luck to everybody. Be safe!!

Went to Hook today, didn't even get a bite.

Wind was a big factor on where we were fishing, but still, not one bite.

Tried up on the east side of the lake, and went around the big island, but still no luck.

Did hook have a winter kill? We didn't see much on the graph either.

I should mention there was five of us fishing Friday night. That brings down success rate.

Hook did have a winter kill, but the DNR went in after ice-out to trap-net and saw plenty of fish. They claim it was a minor kill, but I had heard a report of guy who lives on the north side that he had dead fish two feet deep on his shoreline. A lot of carp, some walleyes and crappies. Probably thinned them down a bit.

I was out yesterday and got skunked. My dad caught three pike on a jig 'n' minnow. I was using a crawler. The fish we did find were on a 8-10 ft breakline in front of a shallow bay.

The overall report for the weekend was slow. A few fish being caught here and there, but nothing hot 'n' heavy during the day. I did hear a report of some night fishermen doing well with plugs off shore.

There was some success out there, but not the majority.

Heading to Winnie this weekend. Can't wait!

Was that you guys trolling into the wind on the west side in the blue/black boat?

Going up and back?

Nope.

We fished off shore after mid-night off some docks. I was done fishing by 4:00 in the morning. I was sleeping when most were fighting the wind and rain.

Fished Maple Lake today for pike.

Caught 7 kept 3 between 18 and 22 inches, doing my part to reduce the small pike population.

Fished the shallow cattail filled area, the sand and small rock points.

I been having great success in the 5 - 10 FOW on crawlers so far this year. Fishing the wind blown areas have been key for me. Wish it would stop raining today. I don't feel like getting wet yet.

Nice fish Canman!

Shallow water has been key! If people like to fish walleyes around here. The next two weeks is going to be the peak time to go after them this summer. Water temps are about perfect. Fish feeder creeks with all this new rain. Those fish should stack up there.

I think it is funny how there is a hot bite out there on a local lake and alot of people know about it, but the lake's name never shows up on here.

I think it is a good thing, but still interesting.

My buddy did really well on opening weekend on the lake I think you're talking about and I've heard from others it's still going. Catching them right off the docks. But there is also another hot one out there as well, my lips are absolutley sealed on that one.

I was just taking with a buddy of mine and I heard another bite going as well.

When I got back from my Winnie trip on Sunday I noticed the Lilacs in bloom. That was the first sign that the walleye bite is getting close to peak around here. I have read Walleye Wisdom and they talk about different times of year for walleye fishing. From what I have read, I feel that the next two weeks will be the best time to get out on the water. Just from the reports I am getting it seems to be true.

The water temps are getting close or are perfect for walleye activity and they are putting on the feed bag. So my only tip to anyone wanting to fish walleyes is to get on the water as much as you can and fish lakes that have a good walleye population.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
