Annandale-Buffalo-Hutchinson fishing reports

It's either find them or find something that they want and wait for them to come to you. Not sure what your grandpa is like, but when I take my old man out, I pray we find fish early, because he grows impatient. But he won't want to move, he'd rather just go home.

I can't wait for the weekend to get here either, I just don't know if I will be able to make it to the lake.

Buffalo lake has been really slow for some guys. If your willing to spend all day drilling and moving you may find some biters.

Hit Buffalo last night for a bit for the first time with my lady. Time well spent, but we didn't get into any fish. I am taking her 8 year old son out this weekend. Probably Saturday morning...possibly tomorrow evening. If anyone has any 'hints' PM me. Thanks and good luck!!!!

No bites for me last night either but I got into a mess of perch this morning - fast as you pull the lil rascals up. Nice to finally have some action but the 'eyes have continued to evade me.

PMs are disabled...

I've had my best success on buffalo near the 30' hole, as far away from huge clusters of shacks as possible - even in 20'. Glow jigs are KEY, and keep them glowed. If you drop it down the hole and are marking fish but they aren't biting after a few minutes, pull the jig back up and re-glow it. I've also had the most success using artificial bait with "tails". Jig it and wait...most have hit mine after a couple of jiggings, but while it was sitting perfectly still. Very light bite. Spring bobbers and flashers are a big help too.

Just got back from doing an early morning fishing run to lake allie.....decent road off of the north side that routes you to the south side of the lake where you will see a few houses. Spent about 6 hours.....12 fish total (small walleyes).....three walleye keepers (16,16, 18 incher) Kept moving spots to try to keep over the fish....used the Vexilar to paint the multiple holes we drilled. Good water clarity -visibility was around 9 ft...

So is anybody still heading out or has all the snow slowed everyone down? I noticed yesterday that about the only people out are those who have friends with snow plows. Not much lake traffic that I could see, even on a nice day such as yesterday.

Hi everybody,

Recently used to Big lake. I was thinking about fishing the lake in town. Any reports and what should I try? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You guys really should look into buying a jeep. I have a Jeep grand Cherokee and it dependably gets me on and off the lake in the craziest conditions without worry. I've never shied away from a lake because of snow. Now, that slushy crusty stuff early in Jan kept me off for a few days but that was more Ice than snow.... Factory Jeeps have more clearance than nearly all factory full sized trucks and other suv's also the lighter weight, closer wheel base and narrower turning radius gets a guy on the ice... period. Sorry to sound like a commercial but seriously, it's not that bad out there. GET out there and fish.

Funny you say that, my buddy has a jeep grand cherokee and he always says "never had to be pulled out by a ford", untill I get a call one Saturday night him and another buddy were out 4X4'n and they got stuck. He still didnt want to be pulled out by the ford so he managed to get his jeep unstuck by the time I got there. Too bad he didnt wait to get pulled out because now his tranny is toast.

But at least it's still "trail rated" he he.

It does happen I spose but the conditions hafta be pretty crappy and still I think it may be part operator error. Jeeps aren't magic or anything they really do seem to go through alot though honestly. I cant tell you how many times I've seen full sized trucks, and various other suv's having major difficulties where my jeep seems to just crawl through. Hope I don't have those tranny issues though. scary. I happen to have 206,000 on my 97 jeep grand ch. limited and I'm real particular when it comes to taken care of it but... nothing lasts forever. It'll be a sad day. Lets just hope that day doesn't come for a while. Kinda like an old faithful Labrador retriever. Weird how this post changed. lol. Sorry. lol.

Location: Annandale area lake

Date: Sunday, Feb 21, 2:00 - 4:30pm

Species: sunnies, crappies, bass

Conditions: sunny, mid-20's, light NW wind

Water depth: 12 feet

Fishing from our portables, it was comfortable sitting out in the open with the top down, bare handed. Decided to go shallow, since it is late winter. The fish were aggressive, rising to the bait the moment we dropped it in. Better bite was on maggies, but waxies took some too. Five fish on the first bait, twelve fish in the first 15 minutes. Lots of small ones, but good keepers mixed in. Sunnies and crappies. One nice big pumpkinseed and an 11" crappie, plus a 13" bass. I would guesstimate we brought in 60 to 80 (I couldn't see how many my partner was landing) and kept enough for three meals. It was a very fast bite. When they slowed coming up to my bait, I dropped beneath them to about 6 inches off bottom and continued to catch several more nice keepers.

It is time to begin working shallower. We were in 12 feet. There were no holes or tracks in the area we fished.

Get those houses off before midnight next Sunday!

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.

My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.

That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better

Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
