my cousin up in Nimrod near wadena has been ice fishing the past couple days

I know they have had some cooler temps. than us, I'm looking to go north to find the new deer trails the blow down this summer and last has changed up trails.

Tape measure after I broke a chunk out and picked it up. 1.5 inches only. This was right off the landing not more than a couple feet out. Should be good on some of the smaller lakes in the next few days with the temps they are predicting. Once I get 3 consistently I will go out further to check more.

This is a little late but here is my report from the day before Thanksgiving.

11/21/12

Last day in the boat for the year and was originally looking for large Perch in a shallow 400 acre lake, spent about 3 hours searching for them in depths from 5-9 feet of water with no success. Started the search for Pike after that and found the highest concentration of Pike in 3.5-5.5 feet of water in a protected bay, and weeds had already died out for the most part, Pike were probably holding there because of relatively warmer water. Main lake temps were around 37 and temps in the bay were around 40-41 degrees. Ended the day with a dozen pike, biggest was 31.5" taken on a buckshot and a head of a large shiner. Most effective approach was throwing a Perch colored Flat Rap FLR-10 size. Throwing into shallower water from relatively deeper water. That lake is now froze over and will soon see if the Pike are still holding here on first ice.

Driving by the north side of Buffalo last night just after dark, the lake surface was freezing quickly. Kind of cool to watch it happen.

I was on otter lake this morning with 3 inches, no bites but about to head out for round 2 before it gets back up to the 50s by the weekend.

rechecked birch tonight and the middle of the lake reopened and was full of swans now.

On my way home from the ice show this afternoon I saw a boat out on Lake Sarah. Looks like it will be a while yet before there is walkable ice. As things re-freeze, be careful as you venture out.

Lake I live on was half froze over is now wide open.

big and mitchell lakes have a little ice, more on mitchell, lots of geese and swans, are keeping large areas open. water on top of the ice on mitchell today, and with the warm temps for the next couple days, it may open up completely. my 15 acre pond looks solid.

Buffalo iced over again on Friday morning. I drove by at about 8:30 AM on the way to a appointment and noticed that the lake was in the process of freezing up. I stopped and watched the ice crystals move across the surface of the water as it froze. You don't see this happen very often during daylight hours.

As of Friday night it was more that 90% covered with ice.

And now will be covered with a half foot of snow. Bummer!!

I was out for a drive yesterday and Stahls and Bell were still mostly covered in ice. I hope they open up with this wind or we'll be in trouble for ice.

What are the other lakes like right now?

my wife and I took a drive around Allie Preston Belle Ceder and Stahls today.... All 5 lakes seem to have small spots of open water. I would have to say that 95% of each lake is locked up. None of them seemed to have a whole lot of snow on them.... There was a little snow along the shorelines. I took the auger with and we stopped at ceder and I only walked out about 20 feet and drilled a whole.... There was maybe 2 inches of ice! I would not suggest anyone venturing out till atleast next weekend! But it does seem like the lakes should do well with this cold snap cosidering the amount of snow the area got! I also drove around this afternoon and checked out some lakes. Manuella and Stella were the most interesting looking. From what I could see, Manuella had some steam rising out of the middle of the lake while Stella had a bunch of rough areas that looked like busted up ice. Both lakes had areas that looked like they were saturated with water at one point and had now frozen over. Stahls, Cedar, and Belle all looked like they were covered in snow with smaller areas of re-frozen areas on top. I don't think I will be going out on the ice for a while around here.

Yes brigs did but after the snow there was about 100 yards of open water straight out from the access going down the shore a ways.

I was by Marion today and it appeared to be locked up. Last week almost half of the lake opened back up but it all froze back over now. That big area didn't look like it had much snow on it, might have just froze over last night after the snow. The rest of the lake appeared to have quite a bit of snow on it. That lake was off to such a good start two weeks ago, I had checked it a couple times and had found 3" of good solid ice. Then last weeks meltdown and now the snow, just can't catch a break on the ice making!
