Made it out for the first time this evening after a few weeks off with walleyes being the target (as always). Only caught two, a 12" and 18". Missed another and had a few more eyeball my bait but wouldn't take it. I was sitting on 14 FOW and got the two using a chart/org/glo Buckshot Rattle spoon. They both are back in the lake to be caught again another day.

Went out to belle this morning and the warm front really got the eyes biting for me. Caught my four eyes in about 30 min and caught 7 total. It was nice to catch some eyes again. I was fishing in 13 FOW using a green and yellow tear drop for a setline and a orange buckshot!!!!

Good morning!

Hi everybody! I was out on Saturday and man what a nice weather day to be on the water.

I went to Hook for about an hour and had one little perch. I was looking for crappies. Has anyone had any luck out there this winter?

I then ventured to Stalhs and caught a couple of dinky sunnies and crappies. Does this lake produce any keepers anymore? I seen a guy who had kept his limit of 5 inch crappies and I just about laughed in his face, but I guess to each his own.

I then debated to go to Star or Cedar. My buddy went to Star and I went to Cedar. He caught a perch and sunnie and 10 crappies under 7 inches. I had 10 crappies between 8-10 inches and a bunch of 7 inch perch.

It seems the lakes around here get way too much fishing pressure and the fish never develop to quality size. I get frustrated by watching the wave of houses go from lake to lake and fishing them out. I realize that these lakes don't get fished out, but they get hammered so hard it makes the fishing for years to come very difficult.

I get really mad at the people that get laid off in the winter and then they camp out on any lake that is biting for weeks on end and keep everything they catch. I wish people would restrain themselves and keep the resource viable, but I know it is wishful thinking.

I would love to call them in, but most of them give their fish away or stack in the freezer. A person really doesn't know what they do with the fish. Hopefully they are not wasted.

I am sure there are plenty of guys out there that are frustrated too.

If you find that secret hole, don't tell a soul because in a matter of weeks it will be fished out and ruined for years.

Until next time, good luck fishing and please practice selective harvest.

I also went out to Hook on Sunday. Despite the wind it was an alright day to be out. We tried for pike but didn't have a flag go up and we were out there for five hours. I have seen some nice fish in the spring and summer but what's the deal when it comes to ice time. I don't even think there are fish in this lake. Five hours with a camera on one of the tip ups and not one fish. Seen more fish on camera on Schilling Lake during the contest out there than on Hook Lake.

I hope to get out after some eyes this coming weekend. My buddies tell me they are going. Just have to get out...

I was out on stella the other day looking for some sunnies and ended up catching 3 small eyes (10-12 inches) and a bunch of small perch and sunnies but no keepers

Not catching walleyes on Pulaski

Dismally not catching walleyes anywhere I go confused

I caught one walleye all season, on Minnetonka.... Unfortunately it was smaller than my middle finger so I had to let him go. I've never seen a walleye that small before. We had sucker minnows with us that were nearly twice the size of the walleye. In fact, the crappie minnow the walleye bit on was almost half his size.

I have had luck on Buffalo and Pelican, but nothing to brag about for at least the past month.

Fishing has slowed on Buffalo. You can still get crappies, but you need to sort more if you want bigger fish. I have talked with about 100 guys nobody has caught a single wayeye this winter. Many ask Where did the small eyes from last year go?

Posted

hunt and fish where did you try out there i would like to get in on some decent walleye action you should shoot me an email with some cord

In everyone's bucket!!!

i hit preston yesterday , i had high hopes but i got skunked. only the secod time this year. Marked fish all day used everything i had but none would bite. oh well todays a new day

Posted

Last two evenings I tried two different lakes and only got one 10" walleye to show for it. Hardly graphing anything which really makes it discouraging.

Posted

Your right jim I was out yesterday morning and caught some fish but they were smaller. Drove by the lake a little bit ago and didn't see a whole lot of people for the contest, yet........

Posted

Need to find new lake most others are getting blasted.

Posted

hit stella around 5 pm and till 8 pm crappies are a bitting in 34 or more feet of water, best place is straight fromlanding , if you build it they will come

Posted

Caught crappies last weekend on Buffalo as fast as I could drop a minnow in the water....this weekend, same spot, same bait, same hook, no fish! Going back out there tomorrow.

Posted

I hadn't been skunked all year. Got skunked last Friday night on Pelican (didn't get on the lake until after 8:30pm though), and also got skunked the next morning on Buffalo during the tourney. Saw plenty of fish but nothing liked my bait presentation enough to bite. Tried crappie minnow on a glow jig, and euro larva on a goofy minnow style jig. Also had tip-ups setup. Frustrating. Had a good time regardless.

I have to agree with Doom... All those small buffalo walleyes went into the buckets!

However there has been a local lake that started putting out some 14-17" eyes this week for me.

Too bad the DNR won't extend the season another week.

confusedconfusedconfused a little contradiction maybe ???

I think most people would agree that nice fat 14 - 17 " fish are not too small, but perfect for eating!

Posted

Nothing small about 14-17" eyes in my book! Good eaters and fight good on 4# and a meatstick!

Cuz like I said, he was breaking off a lot and they were like gold at the time.  Guys an't giving up anything when combat fishing, I'm sure he pissed off some folks running around jumping in and out of open holes. 😉

🤔why didnt ya "leech" some of them black flies from the guy!!!!!🤗😂   awe come on....wanderer would of said it too!!!!😉

Au, yes the black fly, aka the looper bug.  I remember the first time I was introduced to it.  There must have been 20-30 guys out in front of the French on the ice. This once guy was running from hole to hole and pulling fish, but he was also breaking off a lot.  When I finally got close to him, he said he had 2lb line and just the bug on the end and jigging.  I think I had about 6lb line and some jig with waxies.  I jumped in my Suv and buzzed up to the bait store in Two harbors "which is closed now" to get new line and bugs.  By the time I got back and fishing again the bite must have been over!  Spent the rest of the day laying on the ice staring down the hole, ton's of fish went by but not bite!! ☹️    I used to get up at like 3:00am to drive up from Brooklyn Center, fish until dark and drive home.  When I had more of the wander spirit.  Heck I remember when I had no brains or money in the spring, getting up at like 2:30am, driving up and fishing every stream for about an hour that I could get to from Duluth to Grand Maris.  Then driving all the way home the same day.  🤪

Last day of myself hunting before I help my friend with new clients. Back on the bigger marsh, mainly teal but 5 fulvous whistling ducks. A medium size duck but they fly and decoy like Canada geese, big circles and glide in. They are noisey birds

Kettle, sounds like an awesome trip. Never see drake bluewings in MN during the season. For the bridge my pucker factor would've been 11, and that's walking across both ways!!

Gotta love META, right????  Naw, they ain’t tracking’…

I did the looper steelhead thing in front of the French River once.  It was fun. I got one looper but the sight fishing aspect of it was the most fun.   We saw a couple guys limit on steelhead up close to shore and learned the black fly was the way to catch ‘em.  We didn’t have any.   My first 40+ hour day that I can remember.  Went to work Friday morning, Van Halen concert Friday night, too jacked up on the way home to call it a day so we loaded up for the North Shore.  Fished all day, drove home Saturday night.     Those crazy kids…   Chequamegon Bay and the Apostle Islands have always been a want but an undone deed.  The wander spirit has faded from my old traveling buds.  They like to stick to what they know now.

      Oh, he knows…. 😉

About 20" of ice in Black Bay., although that's just based on how far my auger went before breaking through.
